So long story short: I have just about finished converting my Datsun's motor to a turbocharged setup.

Figured I'd post a couple pictures. Feel free to flame away if you want. Or any kind words are also greatly appreciated, as I do all of the work myself, save machining.

And sorry, I didn't shoot these with a Leica M9.....Taken via my Droid. haha

For more information on my actual build thread (hundreds of pictures) feel free to check out:

      http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/9718...l-my-problems/

The car has made quite a change over the years, and is far from complete. It's a process.

As a fellow S30 owner I approve of this. Any pics of the entire car or is it still a work in progress?

Yeah it's definitely a work in progress still. Started out blue.

It's kind of my winter ritual to take it all apart and change stuff.... Then I drive it each Spring until November-ish. Rinse and repeat til it's the way I want. Was carbed. Last year I fuel injected it. This year I turbocharge it. The plague continues....haha

      Last summer:

And thanks for the kind words so far.

It's only in the neck of the intake, and yeah, before I fire the motor I'm going to blast and clean the inside of the manifold. No need for paint in the combustion chamber...This is just a mock up.

Thanks for the comments! Didn't think it would go this well.....haha

I don't wish to exceed 275 whp, as the car is fairly light.

So in order to do this...

      Currently the motor is

1976 L28 (n42 block n42 head for those that care)

Running 8.3:1 static compression. Has 1500 N/A miles on the latest rebuild.

      87mm Ross Pistons

      ARP head studs

N/A cam (brings out around 500 more rpms)

      High Volume oil pump

      Bolt on specs:

Shaved non EGR intake manifold (ported to 60mm)
      240sx 60mm Throttle body
      Stock 280zx exhaust manifold (wrapped)
Stock 280zxt T3 Turbocharger (Heat wrapped)
      270cc injectors (for initial tune)
      Turbo 280zx Oil pan
      Custom Aluminum Fuel Rail
      2.5" Downpipe (wrapped)
3" Mandrel Bent exhaust (fabbed myself)
      3" Dynomax Ultraflo muffler
      21x8x3 Intercooler
      2.25" intercooler piping
      Datsun 2+2 240mm Flywheel
ACT 240mm Street Performance clutch/pressure plate etc..

And LOTS of little things in between.

My "To buy" list consists of the following

      Megasquirt V3

      LC-1 Wideband 02 sensor

      Oil Cooler

3 Row aluminum radiator (with puller electric fans)

Greddy Type RZ blow off valve

      The list goes on....ugh.

So between my last post and now I...

Repainted the engine bay, eliminating anything unused in the process...
Dropped my old 4 speed, and proceeded to clean and paint the transmission tunnel...
Installed my ACT clutch kit, and 240mm flywheel...

Then, I tossed the motor in the car.

I've got most of the bolt on parts buttoned up, and I'm now waiting on stuff in the mail.

And, I am in the process of sourcing some sort of 5 speed. Until then, there is no transmission in the car.

Here are a few random pictures, ending with where I am, as of today.

Or you can always visit my build thread to see all of the pictures.

And now I am currently adjusting the intercooler piping to assure for a good fit. I need to shorten the pipes between the intercooler and the radiator support, but I'm going to wait for my radiator to come first.

Lots of little things left, but I'm enjoying all of it!

This is fantastic. You say you work on it every winter, what are your future plans? I love the blue and good job cleaning up that engine bay.

Did these Datsuns have NISSAN on the valve covers back then?
Hmm. Never owned a Datsun era Nissan, so I don't know.

Hey thanks! And yeah, every winter, er...well it has been this way for the passed 4 winters or so.

      Future plans:

Once the motor is up and running again, with a 5 speed and r200 rear end..

Adjustable coilovers this summer, camber plates, tokico illumina struts

Then I do some wheel hunting

I drive it and work on it all at the same time, so I can enjoy the process. Winter is my time for big changes.

And there are 4 different valve covers offered for the L series Nissan motors.

One states: Nissan 2400, Nissan OHC, Nissan, or Nissan TURBO

the first found on early Datsun 240zs only, the second is found on 71-78 240-280zs, the third is found on Nissan 280zx's, and the later on the turbo 280zx's

Wow, other than the seats* I love it! Seriously, that's a fantastic Z with a great looking motor. Any idea on how much power it'll make when it's all buttoned up?

*They look comfortable and supportive, just a little too modern. I'd have gone with something more along the lines of an old 911 seat. It's your car and your butt going in them though

What else has been done with the car? What sort of brakes/suspension are you using?

Haha thanks! Yeah I have a pair of awesome era buckets in my 260z. Black with white vertical pin stripes in the center. LOVE EM. But for this car, I wanted a modern interior, with subtle classic reminders.

As for the motor, when I start it up the first time, I expect to be around the 230-240whp range (which will be around a 100hp gain, immediately). The stock injectors really only support around 275 whp at 100% duty cycle, so until I tune, and upgrade I won't see much more than 250.

Engine management will be Megasquirt II V3.0

      As for suspension.

This summer the suspension will be entirely gone through. But as of now, I have drilled and slotted rotors in the front, with carbon ceramic pads. The car has brand new drum brakes on the back, but I also have a set of 280zx drilled and slotted rotors, and calipers waiting to go on the car, when I change out the struts.

The link didn't load for me.

Reminds me of the Z car that I learned how to drive that was manual and had a 327 in it.

Thanks for the kind words! They mean a lot.

Seeing as it appears I have some interest in the build, I'll start using this thread as my Datsun progress/build thread.

And yeah, one of my pet peeves in regards to doing a project like this, is when the first purchase is usually some set of wheels, worth (at the time) more than the vehicle, which is no more than a rolling chassis. Building suspension is a good first step, but wheels, those can wait for now, despite my severely under filled fender flares currently.

But of course, time and money dictate the pace of the project.

      Thanks for the Support!

      More to come.
