Noob question...I just picked up a 2012 TDI with 38k last week. I went to go use the rear defrost and everything lights up but just doesn't work. I attempted to check what I thought were the fuses. There's tint on the side windows and nothing on the rear. I've tried to find breaks in the lines but was unsuccessful. Is there anything I should be looking for??

Also, do you guys have recommendations where to shop! I use to have a 97 Jetta back in the day and the only place I can remember is Black Forest industries.

      Thanks in advance

sounds strange to have tint on side windows but not rear? more than likely... they ripped the tint off the rear for some reason and ripped the defroster grid.

stupid ppl. You should try to complain to selling dealer. They knew what was going on I'm sure..

I think they might have ripped it off too...it's already been 10 days since I bought the car and it was t from a VW dealer. Side note I have a coworker who only tinted the sides windows.

wow... I'd still try to see what they can do. Hopefully they'll help you.
Why would anyone only want side windows tinted?

Have you checked where the electrical system connects to the glass?

I guess it doesn't hurt to ask the original dealer but since I didn't get it from a VW dealer I didn't get the certified used which extends warranty 2 years/24k miles. So that's outside the bumper to bumper warranty.

A lot of dealers have a 90 day warranty, especially if it is that new. Go back to the dealer and see if they will fix it. The worst they can say is no.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the tint put on the inside of the window? And the defroster defrosts the outside of the window?

OP: You should have bought an extended warranty since you didn't buy your car as a CPO. I also bought my Jetta at an outside dealership, so I bought an additional warranty that carries me to 75k miles. Always better safe than sorry

defrost stripes are on inside, you take off the tint wrong way, you can damage the stipes

OP, if the dealer Tells you to **** off and you can't get anything done and you are slightly handy, let me know and I'll try and help you check the connections. Hopefully it is something easy.

Defrost is definitely on the inside. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to scrape the rear window

Thanks man! Ill check into it and hopefully I won't need to do anything myself. I'm very handy for the most part but stay away from electrical. Bought a new car so I didn't have to do any work! Lol

Seen that situation before. Turned out the rear window was replaced (for whatever reason). Less likely they ripped it off. probably just not connected correctly. take it back insist on it working.

Yah I can't complain I got a TDI with 6MT and 38k for $20500 out the door. That's why I went there. I plan on calling my LOCAL VW dealer after work and see what they say.

The OEM tint is "IN" the glass, the defroster is "ON" the glass on the inside of the car ... and sometimes inside the glass ... and yes it defrost the outside, but does so by heating the glass from the inside.

I assume you checked the history of the car for accidents?...Just saying why would a rear window need replacing?(if thats what happened) seems strange that someone would just decide the peel off the tint if the cars was tinted all around.

The CarFax is clean. Where would be the connectors?

They should be behind the left and right sail panels there also may be an antenna wire attached to the glass somewhere too. Check and make sure bothe wires are attached. One of them may be a ground wire so make sure it is attached to the body correctly too.. You can also use a test light or multimeter to test all the grids.

      Hold the phone.

Per the federal gubmint the vehicle was required to have a used car warranty sticker explaining what was and wasn't covered and this requires a signature from the current owner.

If the defroster is listed as a covered item then it's a done deal.

If the deal was negotiated as an "AS IS" sale, and from the decription it sounds as if it was, to meet a price point then the buyer has no legal or moral recourse.

I've been in this situation before from the other side of the desk, and often times I've fixed something I didn't have to because th customer or their family had been a long time customer ... but usually not.

Demanding something outside the contract as the buyer is no different than the seller calling back and demanding more money after the sale.

Depends on what area u live in. Im from McAllen, tx and carfax is useless down here most of the time. Suspects who are involved in hit and runs just go to Mexico to repair their vehicle and come back to the US.

CARFAX is one of the best scams ever devised by the mind of man.
