    Thread: THE 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit L

      Purchased the car from the original owner with 7,100 OG miles. She was the little old lady who drove to the liquor store once a week. It is an L model with no other options. She somehow managed to cook the clutch so we pulled out an NOS VW one to install. We later located an NOS Abarth exhaust and am currently hunting an NOS Callaway Stage II kit. I couldn't ask for much more as it's my favorite color Lago Blue(LE5B) and has all the rare blue interior parts, plus the original radio delete plate!

      Plans are to find NOS period correct aftermarket parts then choose from the best. It will be lowered on KW V2s thanks to the info from the forum. It will be receiving 15 inch ATS Cups, but I know nothing about offset so I may end up with several pairs of shoes lol. And finally a vintage aftermarket steering wheel.

      First night home 2 years ago, had 7,100 miles and it is currently the farthest West it has ever been from Westmoreland.


      Current status: 15x7 ATS Cups, Rokkor Coilovers , Nardi Classic 390MM, Aluminum Euro Bumpers

      It's one of the lowest mileage Sonetts as well. Bought it with 35,275, and I just turned 45,000 last month! All original as well

      too bad youre going to ruin it with ultra low suspension

      hey its not that bad, the exhaust is actually a legit performance upgrade

      as for riding low...meh... i dont see the benefit other than looks
      especially if the control arms, cv axle, and tie rods are not taken into consideration


      i dont understand why he needs to mod the hell out of it after he just got it
      a callaway turbo kit for your 1.7L cis?

      Also a fan of the mods you have lined up. Period correct stuff thats not overtly outrageous or tacky. Maybe the orange wheels, but like you Im okay with the gulf colors (917 fan )

      Food for thought. Might look good on a square headlight car as well. -shrugs-

      We were going to do a Euro front end but the late Westy front has grown on me and nobody seems to do them right.


      Was this not the car posted on "TheSamba" a while back? I was actually going to buy it for the $7900 he was asking for it. But I already have an 82' with 16k OG miles on it

      I remember when this came up for sale here and on the Samba. I thought the seller was

      But, please don't scene it out with stupid-low suspension and gaudy wheels.
      Be tasteful if you have to modify it.
      Put on some period-correct 14's, some Bilsteins, and you have a car that looks better than 250 cars on here.

      I like the look of lowered MkIs always have, probably will run a similar setup to my MINI, all function not form.
      There are PLENTY of period-correct wheel options beyond BBS. Zender turbos, Ronal Turbos, ATS Pepperpots, Phone Dials, etc.

      Most 15' wheels that aren't BBS-style mesh designs or turbo discs look too big on these cars and make them look like Tonka Trucks, even when dropped.

      Then again, it's your car. Just remember there are a 1,001 ways to "modify" it, but it's only original once.

      I wouldn't mod a damn thing on that car. No suspension, wheels, nothing! And definitely nothing to the engine. That car is so minty, it'd be a crime to mod it. It's ride height is that way because that's the way these things were in 1981. I wish I had the cash to buy it as is off of you, because I'd treat it like the queen that it is!

      Lovely rabbit. In my opinion which means nothing, but i am not a fan of the idea to put orange on the car. NOS items, a drop and some wheels for sure. I just think something like bright orange could take away from the overall beauty of how original the car is. Again just my .02

      very unlikely that just being both from the same year, or especially same color
      were they ever together in the same MONTH.

      even a VIN in series wouldnt mean they were on the same line at the same moment


      though i would agree...dont take the minty rabbit out of the garage in the snow
