I used to think all gasoline brands were pretty much the same. As it turns out, that's not the case at all.

Top Tier is a standard, not a company. The fuel companies may have to pay small administrative fees to Top Tier incurred during application for Top Tier status, but any other money is paid to the testing labs which verify the fuel company's detergent levels are up to snuff.

1.How do I become a TOP TIER (TT) gasoline marketer?

Step 1: Contact your detergent additive supplier about becoming TOP TIER.

Step 2: Obtain the TOP TIER performance testing data from your detergent additive supplier.

Step 3: Submit the TOP TIER performance testing data to the TOP TIER sponsors for review.

Step 4: Sign the TOP TIER Attestation Form which claims your exact detergent type and treat rate for use at your service stations.

Step 5: Sign a TOP TIER license agreement.

Congratulations! You are in the TOP TIER program for 2 years and can renew as desired.
The performance testing costs will vary depending on the independent ISO 17025 certified lab that is hired to run the tests. The total cost of all testing can be in the range of $25,000 – $30,000. The detergent additive company pays for the testing; they select the treat rate that they think will pass the TOP TIER performance specification limits. Once they have a Pass, they inform their fuel marketing customers of the detergency treat rate required to be in the TOP TIER program. It is then up to the fuel marketers to decide if they want to treat their gasoline at the prescribed detergency treat rate.

I only use top tier, but I switch in between them.

Additives can build up in your system. changing it up prevents that.

It appears that all that cheap Arco gas is slowly poisoning my Audi.

Its cool though, I save like $.05 a gallon.

There are companies that probably could be Tier I, but do not submit to it all.

I used to think Sunoco was good stuff, but my dad's car will not run on it, or Marathon, or Racetrac.
It has no problem with Shell, Mobil, or Texaco though.

Sunoco doesn't even own any oil refineries anymore. They buy on the open market and re-brand.

Costco gas is actually really good, only store brand gas I will use. They would meet Top Tier standards if they chose to register.

The Philly, etc. market, gets it's gas from the old Sunoco refinery in South Philly, which is now owned by PES (Philadelphia Energy Solutions ). The stations/tanker trucks still have the Sunoco logo. Sunoco, as a company, is now longer around.

It may be a small logo or they may not display any logo. I'm going to look next time I fill up at one because I can't remember seeing anything either.

Exactly. If this top tier designation meant anything why wouldnt thee companies flaunt that status?

It's something that doesn't specifically come up in their advertising.

The only thing I know about fuel brand quality is that the biggest indicator isn't the brand on the pumps, it's the name on the tanker supplying them.

What station I go to is more a matter of convenience, timing, and believe it or not, service. Some station attendants/store clerks are just nicer or easier to deal with.

Yep. Sunoco is now as a brand owned by Energy Transfer Partners, based out of Texas. That's all they are though, a brand and a bunch of gas stations.

I know, I work at the Philly Refinery. We don't own any gas stations, we're just the refinery.

My car always runs like complete crap on Wawa. They don't even have 93 octane, their max is 92 because they can't guarantee the quality of the fuel. They get their fuel from whoever sells it the cheapest, and I wouldn't be surprised if they picked up 93 octane that's slightly off test to use as their premium.

I love me some Costco gas.

Just filled up my GT-R with some 93-octane Kirkland Signature goodness.

      Haters gonna hate.

Had my GLI for 8k miles and it has only have QuikTrip gas in it. Don't know if it performs better or worse without it obviously, but all of my prior cars have ran better on QT gas.

Plus, they are the cleanest gas stations and have the best soda fountains.
