Thread: Going 1+ how long the clutch will last?

I take that back. In the last couple days I experienced a new phenomenon- while accelerating with full throttle in 2nd the engine would let go somewhere around 4-4.5K RPM and jolt the car. I assume it is because the clutch lets go. First time this happened I thought I revved up too far but then I was able to reproduce it while watching RPMs which disproved that theory.

I've had SPEC clutch sitting in the box for a while, guess it will have to go in soon.

After further investigation it looks like whatever I experienced is not related to my clutch, so my statement still stands that my clutch is perfect after 25k km.

I felt mine slipping for the first time today. Same conditions as everyone else. Colder day, 4th and 5th gear at highway speeds. I'm at stage 1 ready to go to 1+ at 5300 miles. Lots of city driving.

Yea, very cold morning in the DMV. Barely got on it in fourth and felt the slippage. New clutch for Xmas for me!

Can you force the slip in stock mod? I'd be at the dealership. Stage one shouldn't be crushing a clutch that fast

That's a good idea, thanks. I think it's ridiculous that it's letting go already. The car is 18 months old but I've never replaced a clutch with less than 80k miles on it.

My stock R's clutch has slipped once since new (at 10K miles, now). I was leaving a crowded car show this past summer and a traffic backup caused a few miles of slow stop-and-go driving. I was not being hard on the clutch, just pulling away in a normal fashion at like 1200-1400 rpm. When I finally merged onto the freeway, I got some slip when accelerating in fifth gear. I can only assume that the slow going heated up the clutch a bit too much (it was around 80* that day). After a few cool-down miles, I got on it a bit in fifth and sixth and there was no more slip. It also hasn't slipped since.

I am 1+ and preemptively changed my clutch even though I never had slip. I am happy I did. First, I love the feel, and engagement of the new clutch (DXD Stage 2 Endurance). Second, I am going to track the car, and feel more comfort I can push the car hard in any condition and the clutch should hold. Third, I will go stage 2+ in the next year (hopefully) so this would have been done anyway, and now I get the benefits of points 1&2 sooner.

Mine only slips in the 93 octane program but I'm adding an APR hpfp and the 1+ file Friday. My local dealer was 100% sure VW would kick back the claim because of the tune. I was completely upfront about what was done to the car figuring my soul is worth more than $1750. I ordered the HS RSR clutch today. Problem solved.

I've been Stage 2+ for like 20k miles and now on the revised APR 3.31 revision and I think my clutch will last for a while guys. I don't drive it that hard and if I do I don't launch it or double clutch or anything. I just gun it in the higher gears and so far she's a champ!

For the record, I think it's completely absurd that this clutch only made it 5400 miles. I'm an old man and have had manuals since I'm 16. Launching to me is something rockets do. I simply don't have time to screw with it and do have a few extra bucks to make it go away.

Noticed pretty hard slip in 4th getting on the highway. It's about 58°F and raining. Curious about what "fixed" it first time I noticed slip (about 8K miles ago) I played with it for a bit. While in 6th, I'd give it go pedal to see how far it would slip. About 1500 RPM, damn, but was it trying to bite again? Cruised for about 2 miles, and pushed it again. Slightly less slip, and it grabbed and started pulling! Each time I did this the slip was less and less severe. Now out of highway, (exit came up) I downshift to 5th as I exit and lay into it. No slip!? WTF?

So, question to all those that had/have slipping stock clutches.. have you tried "burning off the bad spot" and notice anything similar to what I experienced?
I have a similar thing happening. Basically what I've surmised is that it's just a very fine line where the torque exceeds the clutch holding capacity. As you know, engine torque and load varies a lot by IAT, road conditions, slope of road, AC on/off, etc, etc. It's just hit or miss for me. But, as it gets colder and the car produces more TQ, slips are much more common. Now, with temps 30F-40F, it pretty much slips all the time in 4-6 anything past half throttle between 2500-4000 ... usually .

I've had a revo stage 1 tune for 14000 miles and it just slipped for the first time today in 6th gear (70mph, 39 degrees in 6th gear). I have 17700 total miles on it and never do hard launches.
