      good comment here:

Kilometers of sidewalk can be poured in a day, same with sod rolled out. Those buildings are all precast and will go together like Lego. The sewers only have to last two weeks, really, they lay pipe and as long as it's at least 0.5% slope down then it's all good, they probably designed the pipe diameter larger than any peak flow. Cleanup crews with hi-hoes and dump trucks could have the garbage gone over night.

Are they pressed for time? Yes. But you can't look at a sidewalk and and pile of garbage and go all America vs USSR on them.
      also, just as good

How are the terrorists going to find anything to blow up? Threat avoided, mission accomplished
things can happen a lot faster over there, they don't have to wait for permits and contractors taking their time. its do or die for anyone working in Russia

It sounds like the Gizmodo cherry-picks from areas that are known to be unfinished, while most of the remaining Olympic area is complete. Ah well, still funny...

This one is from today http://gizmodo.com/can-sochi-get-its...her-1514828222

Seems like they published the same article twice.

      Way to go Gizmodo.

Back in high school the men's bathroom at the end of the foreign language hall was never remodeled and it had toilet stalls with very short walls. So short that if you sat down on the toilet the wall would only come up to your shoulder. They also didn't have doors. They had a chain that you would hook across the opening to keep people out. No one used these toilets. Well almost no one. The awkward, weird kid in my Spanish class named Jeff did. I walked in on him one day taking a crap.

A guy in my FB is a sound engineer at the national broadcasting company here and he's on a work assignment at the olympics. He posted a picture on FB of himself in Sochi, not wearing a coat and with palm trees in the background and no snow in sight and the picture's caption was "Winter games".

Anyway, they built pretty much everything from scratch there. Here's only some things I've heard from Sochi:
-Snowboarders are complaining the slopes have jumps too dangerous. One top boarder was already injured.
-Not enough accommodation capacity is ready for the games, so e.g. accredited journalists can't reside in the area
-People's homes were demolished because they needed the land for the olympics but in reality they just forcefully took over the expensive land to build holiday homes there and sell them at high prices when the olympics have upped the area's profile
-The ski jumping hills were built on some swampy land and they were sinking, so they had to be supported to prevent further sinking
-Corruption was common in the building phase
-The games are going to cost 50 billion dollars instead of e.g. Vancouver's 2 billion dollars.

It's Russia, what can you expect?

      Well, true.

It was some Goodwill Games about a decade ago in Russia that had such dirty water in the swimming pools that swimmers refused to swim in it.

OT, where any thread can become a thread about toilets.

In this example you've got privacy, but I'm not sure any full size human could actually use that toilet. It may be safer to skip the toilet completely and just hit the shower.

ah, a more creditable source. Russia's going to end up looking like **** over this. moreso I mean.

one wonders what, if any, measures they will take to stifle social media that paints a poor picture...

I just looked at where Sochi is on Google Maps. I didn't have a clue and I didn't realize it's so far south. It's on the Black Sea the same latitude as Portsmouth, NH. The skiing at Rosa Khuto looks like Whistler's setup with a base elevation of 2,000 feet and 5,000+ feet of vertical. Sochi is not a winter city. It will get up to 50 F degrees in February. Any snow event like XC skiing and biathalon is going to be on man made snow at the base of the ski resort 30+ miles up a canyon at a low elevation where there's freeze-thaw every day. A seriously crap spot for a winter olympics.

Doubt that two track with a railing between is for a bicycle. More likely for a cart to roll the trash out. No such thing as an elevator there I guess.

If your bicycle is on your left as you walk up the steps, and bicycle on left as you walk down the steps, or vice versa. As you can see, they just toss the garbage far enough until it lands on the bottom in Russia.
