So, SWMBO's Mk5 Golf GT TDI is getting a bit long in the tooth, and is to be replaced. For some reason known only to them, VWA has decided not to release a Mk7 Golf GTD, which would be the replacement in a heartbeat. The Mk7 Highline TDI is ok, but she thinks 'meh!'...and who am I to argue?! I suggested GTI, but no, she likes her torques...and loves diesel fuel consumption bragging rights.

What else is out there? Leaving the French aside, there's nothing I can think of that offers an oiler with >130Kw/350Nm in this size of car anymore. Ideas?

Octavia RS TDI? Same engine as GTD, cheaper than a GTI with heaps of standard kit

Yes, if only Volvo would start making cars with windows again.

Octavia RS wagon is the obvious choice.

We've been declared Volvo-free, so that's a miss; Bimmer and Audi are a tad above SWMBO's budget; I suggested the Octavia, but am told it is too big -- and after looking at one, I have to agree. Actually, the MINI Cooper diesel is a good thought. I shall discuss. Thanks for the suggestions.

Compared to the GTD, It's veeerrryy leisurely.

"0-62mph sprint is dispatched in just 9.2 seconds". Hmm dispatched is not the right word.

It's the 270Nm with 1,200kg that's most meaningful to me

John, SWMBO doesn't do TLGPs, and anything less than 10s is still pretty zippy

3cyl Cooper is a lot of fun, can only imagine the diesel would be similar. Best to get a manual too, I reckon.

Shame the F56 looks a bit shizen.

Actually, petrol Cooper would probably go close to matching her Golf as far as consumption goes. On paper anyway.

Affairs with Italians are usually only short term. How about Mazda 3 diesel? Has. Nice bit of stonk manwell and the soul red looks hot. Check out the Civic diesel as well supposed to be a sweet unit

Good stuff. I drove the F56 Cooper S last week and for me it has grown up too much, and everything just feels less frisky. Hence why GP is still the choice car. But for the missus as a daily driver, the grown up MINI is a positive. Get it with adaptive damping and you'll be laughing. And you are correct about 270nm. 0-100 means nothing, it's in gear acceleration that is going to mean everything. I drove a Macan Turbo and Diesel recently, and I can tell you that despite the diesel being a leasurely 6.3s compared to 4.6 for the turbo, it was as quick if not quicker than the turbo in terms of in gear acceleration. That Macan Diesel is a revelation in terms of smooth and fast diesel. Too bad Mrs Timbo is not after something bigger.

Agree to a large extent re 0-100, but geez my 78 Gemini was as leisurely as that. I suggest it would be a dog coming from the GTD, that was my point.

WAY is correct. The GTD's party trick is acceleration from 60-80; 80-120...where it rips, and so does the derv MINI, by all accounts. My recollection is that the 78 Gemini was leisurely in those areas as well (well, my 78 626 was )

Dare you try or take the other half to try a Giulietta JTDm.

And I must be the exception to the short lived Italian rule. My JTD has just cracked 200Ks and all I've done to the engine is change the oil, maybe a filter... occasionally. Don't forget FIAT invented common rail dervs and sold it to Bosch, who stuck it your VAG**

      FIAT are still innovating.

My neighbour has a Countryman JCW. Still can't get used to such a big MINI. As for the SD, 6.1l/100km? Lots of petrol cars do that now!
