Sold a Tacoma to get into this truck. I had it optioned specifically. Its nice you can check option boxes on these trucks and don't have to buy "packages".

This will be hauling my new cargo trailer.

5.3 V8 with AFM and Direct Injection.
      6 speed automatic
      4x4 with manual transfer case.
342 axle ratio with automatic locking differential.
      Off Road tire option.
Plow package - upfitter switches, high amp alternator, heavy duty front springs.
Trailering package (heavy duty sway bars), but with brake controller delete (I prefer aftermarket controller).
      Electric window/convenience package delete

I don't actually have my paperwork handy but I BELIEVE my OTD was around $26 or $27k.

I have to drive this truck and trailer to San Francisco, LA, Las Vegas on Friday so in about a week I will give a 6,000 mile update.

It is very quiet....like a tomb inside. After about 50 mph, you can't tell your speed based on road or wind noise. 75 and 50 sound the same.

Fuel economy is 22 hwy 18 city and when rolling empty the truck does appear to meet that. Towing my box trailer (aerodynamics of a Taco Bell restaurant) with 2k lbs in it I get 16 hwy at 70 mph which is pretty good.

The transmission is amazing. Snappy shifts up or down when you want them with no fuss. Manual mode is genius.

Factory projector lights are awful. Dim output and the pattern is all over the place.

The interior is great. BOTH seats are soft touch so the discerning VW owner would feel right at home.

Nice truck & solid choice! I've loved the Sierra for the last couple generations.

Nice. Did you end up going through that dealer that played dumb about the plow package?

Does this 5.3 have the DOD (Displacement on Demand) or is that what the AFM does now?

Yes I bought from that dealer.

AFM (active fuel management) = DOD

Nice purchase, I love these trucks. But why delete power windows and locks? I just sold my all-manual-everything Chevy today and I never care to have crank windows and manual locks again.

Nice! And that mileage with that trailer is pretty good. Looks quite comfortable too.

It's soooo comfortable. The seats are like old Buick bench seats made for fat people...you just sink right in. The truck is not sporty and handles like an airport tug so you just don't need any bolsters or stiff seats or any of that racecar crap anyways.

Actually the truck has power locks, just novpower windows. I like to crank my own windows. I don't need a stupid mystery machine in the door panel taking my job.

The Call of Duty hat bros it out nicely.

Also, I would think it'd be more than 26-27. That's not bad.

Agreed. Also, I'm liking the manual-shift transfer case that still comes in the lower spec trucks.

Now we just need a thread from the guy who bought power windows with manual locks.

Systems like the Tekonsha P3 have advanced proportioning sensitivity and can store multiple trailer brake settings. The factory GM controller is very primitive.

Shorter wheelbase. The longer wheelbase model probably subjectively tows better too, beyond the nice rating bump.

Is it really a 4.42 axle, or 3.42?

Nice truck. It must haul ass when empty. Reg cab, short box, and the 5.3 must shift pretty good compared to the old Taco

I think it's just a typo. From everything I've read you want the 3.42 rear axle ratio (or the shortest ratio you can get in whatever spec you choose).

The Tacoma is actually more fun to drive despite being almost 4 seconds slower 0-60.

I definitely don't like the awkwardly-long bed, but otherwise not bad at all.

For a work truck, function > form. The standard bed and short bed don't fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood or sheetrock, which is kind of a standard requirement for many work trucks. But yeah, I agree, the standard bed looks the best. Not to mention long bed = more difficult to park in suburbia.

Why not just lower the tailgate if you need to haul plywood?

I do just fine with my long bed Tacoma

why the 3.42 when it's your main trailering rig?

3.73 would be so much easier on an actual trailering rig and pull soooo much better
