Ignition Key Cylinder Problem

I go to turn my car on (it's a 1999 new body VW Jetta, manual) and heard a crack then my key just started spinning freely. Now I start my car with a screw-driver
Is it possible to get the whole assembly from a junk yard and try replace the broken part metal piece inside? If I get the whole thing with a key from the junkyard do I need to re-key is the new one gonna work?

Same exact thing happened to me on my 99.5 Jetta.

I believe it's just the piece at the end of the ignition cylinder where your key first sticks in that requires re-keying. Notice that there is a sensor connected to it, this is what reads your key.

And that end piece detaches from the actual ignition cylinder so I think you could use a used ignition cylinder as long as you swap the end piece over.

But don't quote me on anything because I ended up getting a new cylinder from the dealer so I knew things would work out.
