the job is much more involved than simply removing the oil pan and replacing the rod bearings. You need to have the crank and rotating assembly checked by a machine shop, and at that point you may as well do a complete rebuild. Not something you will get done in your driveway.
If you already own your Touareg why not just get it fixed. Would be cheaper then going out and buying something else then having payments again. This is just my opinion obviously, but you are right in that a Forester will not be any where like a Touareg and I think you would not be happy with it at all.
why not source a used engine and have your dad drop it in for you?
