Pres. Obama says US, Cuba to normalize relations

      http://www.whdh.com/story/27651495/p...lize-relations

WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States and Cuba have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations and open economic and travel ties, marking a historic shift in U.S. policy toward the communist island after a half-century of enmity dating back to the Cold War, American officials said Wednesday.

The announcement came amid a series of sudden confidence-building measures between the longtime foes, including the release of American prisoner Alan Gross and a U.S. spy held in Cuba and the freeing of three Cubans jailed in the U.S.
The Castros must be near/already dead.

Tourism will remain a no-no, but this is absolutely a great step towards us enjoying Havana and checking out all of those cars!

Well technically if you don't pay for the trip or spend any money there it is perfectly fine to go to Cuba . It is a trade and financial embargo, since going there would require you to pay for things that is what makes it illegal. So even someone who is a US citizen and went on a different passport (GF wants to go on her UK passport) would be violating the embargo since they are a US citizen spending money even if the passport used for entry was legal.

One of my uncles went there by boat about 20 years ago for some boating magazine article about speed boats used for running drugs. Went there took pictures turned around. Nothing illegal although I recall him saying that he was questioned about it when he got back to NY (left from florida not ny). I think part of the point was showing you could get there and back without needing to fuel up, since fueling up there would have been illegal.

So, this deal is to promote smoking cigars?

      Thanks, Obama!

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, called the easing of economic restrictions "inexplicable" in a statement. "Appeasing the Castro brothers will only cause other tyrants from Caracas to Tehran to Pyongyang to see that they can take advantage of President Obama's naiveté during his final two years in office. As a result, America will be less safe as a result of the President's change in policy," he said.

no, it's the obama fans get all pissed when people bring up Obama's golfing, claiming Bush took 1000+ days of vacation. Which isn't true because 1. Presidents don't take vacations like us lowly serfs take vacations. 2. Bush-haters add in the numbers of days at Camp David, which isn't vacation.

I meant what I said. I don't think Obama is lazy. I actually like the guy. I think he works hard and has accomplished a lot during his time. I think he's relatively sharp too. I like the man, I don't like the president. I don't agree with a lot of his outlook on a lot of topics. But because I disagree with him doesn't mean I can't like him. My comment was meant to imply that I don't think he is lazy, I do think he's sh!tty...if you define sh!tty as not being in agreement with one's views.

Even if this opened tourism I dont know that it'd be a huge boon for them, Europs and Cannucks go there readily as is. I mean sure there'd be some pent up demand and curiosity at first but there's also a ton of other options in that area.

Seems like every time I have been there (vacation), it's the loud, obnoxious, drunk Quebecers that ruin the trip for me. They are everywhere. (I am French Canadian)

I'd welcome some more Americans there...bring some class

I actually think the island could bring in a lot of Americans. The cruise ship industry will be able to add another stop to their route between islands rather than just going around Cuba. I have no idea is it's ports will be able to handle the ships, but I wouldn't be surprised if the big cruise companies help get one in shape quick. That alone would start pouring in some much needed cash.

Oh sure, this will mean some more people will go there, but they already do from much of the world. It's not like this suddenly creates a tourism industry there.

I think it will be big for them but also at the same time I think a lot of it, like the cigars, are the forbidden fruit aspect. Few fks will be given about cuban cigars you can buy them at wawa. Going there will be interesting in the its a new place you can go but I think a lot of the desire will die in many once it is completely legal. GF has flat out said she is in a hurry to go because she doesn't really care once anyone can just go, for her despite being to like 30-40 countries from my quick guesstimate only wants to go because she's not allowed.

I think there is also something about receiving free services to which I guess could some how be applied.

But say you went with someone who legally could go as a Canadian, if they paid for the travel (even if you bought a ticket some of it would be to airport taxes or fuel bought there), paid for all goods and services so nothing you received was free. As far as what I have read about no laws were actually broken.

      Jokes on you gringos.

Most people wouldn't be able to tell a real Cuban cigar from a Marlboro wrapped tobacco leaves.

Case in point, the large majority of "Cuban" cigars are made in the Dominican Republic, and many of THOSE are sold right back to tourists even in Cuba.

Also, the Cuban expat community needs to get their collective heads out of their ass.

They can't come up with a single legitimate reason as to why this is a bad thing.

Bless your heart. Disagreeing with him without thinking he's an evil man trying to destroy America. What a novel concept.

I'm just a regular Joe, with a regular job. I'm your average white, suburbanite slob.
