I felt the same way the first time I drove my Coupe. Not fast at all, but it sounds great, looks great, and it's a blast to drive. Neue Klasse BMW's don't drive as vintage as they look.

What year is the roundie? It can't be a '75 as those are the square years. If it is someone has replaced the rear valence. Nice find by the way and I can't wait till I feel better so that I can work on mine. Same type body work but someone painted mine like a P40 Warhawk.

They're sweet little cars. I have a '76 at the shop with a 1.8T swap (and subsequent Precision 5657 turbo, standalone, built motor, etc.), and it's a riot to drive. Will be sad when it finally gets sold, but they're great cars. The later cars are a really good value right now (in my opinion).

Having owned a 1.8T MkIV GTI and the long-time owner of a 2002 I won't share my feelings about poisoning one with the other.

I've been lucky enough to have been around a lot of different 2002s. From stock, Solex carb'd early cars, a Bauer Cabriolet, several different tii's ranging from stock to track day specials, and even a couple of Turbos. I can tell you that all of them are massive fun. The factory turbo is so massively entertaining, you step on the throttle and NOTHING happens then you're suddenly catapulted forward on a wave of boost. They spit fire on the upshift and crackle and snort on the downshift. The 5-speed dogleg gearbox just adds to the fun. For all 2002s, there's the perfect combination of the torquey nature of the M10, the compliant but well-planted suspension, the solid build quality and the non-nonsense interior that makes for such a compelling drive. Is it as exhilarating as an Alfa Giulia GTV? Probably not... but it gets to the same end via a more Teutonic means.

You guys are getting me all pumped up. I think I might have to crack a beer, don my Carhartts and get to work in the garage.

If you want another dogleg 265 CR let me know. I've been kicking the idea around of selling mine for a normal pattern Getrag and using the profits to buy a really nice exhaust.

I'll have to measure the driveshaft to see how involved this might be, but hey, if you end up with it I probably have a little time on my side. My clutch is pulling off the top, so when the clutch goes I'll probably swap gearboxes.

The dogleg is pretty neat, but once you get over the "erh ma gerd derg lerg" I think I want a normal one back in there. I just know they go for a decent amount of money due to how rare they are.

some progress this weekend. got a temp tag for it so i can now drive it, i pulled the diving boards off, pulled the heater box out and determined the blower motor was shot so i stole the whole heater box out of my buddies roundie while he wasnt there i have heat now, but weirdly i lost turn signals and right after that the car wouldnt start, swapped coils and still nothing put the old coil back on and it finally came back to life. still baffled by that. going to be ordering seals soon.

Looks like the last generation 2002 with the ugly bumpers and new tail lights. I remember when my dad was selling them long ago at his Bimmer dealership.

I have seriously been considering getting 2002. I almost bought a 73 2002tii when I was in Hawaii from 82-84. Wish I had picked one up instead of the 79 RX-7. Enjoying the build thread.
