      about time!!

they've been sucking their annual allotment along with water they've banked for nearly 10 years now. Now that the watershed is nearly dry, and the water they pull from the colorado is about to fail NOW they make it a big deal to save water.

Las Vegas started water conservation over 10 years ago. with 2M people in the southern nevada area, we use LESS water now than we did 10 years ago with less than 1/2 of that.

too little, too late if you ask me.

Yeah I was reading the list of measures CA is putting into place and thinking "Gee guys this is all really basic stuff you have to have to live in a desert climate...you're just doing this now???"

Being that I'm implanted here for a few months...literally no one conserves water here. No one. If I wasn't on the internet all day I would have no clue that SoCal is in a drought -- the awareness is ****.

      Good.

I already dug out my front lawn and sprinklers and replaced it with drought tolerant plants. I told the wife we may as well take advantage of the county incentive to do it, $2/sq ft., because it's either a dead lawn or something decent looking and may as well have someone else foot most of the bill. My only regret is that the county kickback for doing this may rise as more incentive for people to do the same. If those don't even make it I'll go the succulent/cactus route or hardscaping.

Also picked up a very nice $1k high efficency washing machine from Sears outlet that after the water rebate cost me like $250.

This goes on much longer and CA will indeed start to look more like AZ, though there's enough native CA plants to use that people wont go full cactus.

      I agree.

It's actually a fascinating story about how water usage rights were developed and codified in the west. There are a couple of really good books on the matter. Hard to fathom if you're an east coaster like me, with groundwater 5' below your shoes and plenty coming from the sky.

They may get a pass as they recycle most of their water. Not sure how much actual loss they have.

Bear Republic has been pulling out of states because there's not enough water to brew beer and supply them. MA was the last one, they were holding out there because I guess they sell well but they announced back in November it would end soon. Buddy just said he cant find it easily and it's almost all gone.

I was going to poke fun, but then I remembered we've got bizarre cancer algae in our water.

      Not sure what's worse.

I truly feel bad the Cali residents and hope some rain comes your way. That is of course for the douchnozzles who popped into the "Hey Northeast 1-2 ft of snow" thread. I hope they dry up like a raisin forgotten under your couch.

I was hearing this morning that the lack of snow on the Sierra Nevada mountains is making things really crappy for the farmers in that area. The water runoff from the melting snow is apparently what supplies their crops and the snow cover is 6% of what of is normal. Damn.

Wild thought but has Cali thought to invest in (more?) desalination plants and start using the Pacific as a big well?

Apparently they've got like 17 of them going up.

But it's really expensive. Not a very good solution for irrigating crops.

Would it be bad of me to post my rain forecasts all spring? They were so smug with their temps in the 70s all winter.

Seriously, Canada needs to figure out a way to export snow. Pack 'em in air conditioned freight trains for all I care and sell the stuff. It's bloody April and we're expecting snow this weekend!

I'm sure those are annual averages but my last usage was right at 100 gallons a day. It was a lot higher last year before ditching some grass and getting a high efficiency washer. Anyhow some of those numbers like palm springs are bonkers. Embrace the desert.
