I have a mk3 2.0 ABA that I just swapped the engine and tranny from another vehicle.
On start I get crank and start, but it quickly dies. Seems it's unable to idle.
Timing was good when the engine was removed, i didn't touch the belt so it should be fine. firing order is correct. plugs, wires, rotator, cap, coil are all fairly new.

I've read a bad immobilizer cam cause this. How do I ensure it's the immobilizer?
As usual, when plugging in the battery negative after the positive is already set, the alarm goes off. I can turn the alarm of from the doors but not from the ignition, when i crank the key in the ignition nothing happens. Is this indicative of a bad immobilizer?
How do I bypass the immobilizer?

If you think it's caused by something else please chim in!
      Thanks!

Damnit, the timing didnt' stick as I assumed it would
      *EDIT* timing did stick... anyways..

Oh yeah, I found a way to bypass the immobilizer

Jumped T6/5 to T10/6 on other terminal. This allows me to disconnect/connect the battery terminals without the car alarm ever sounding.

What makes you think that the timing was off?

With the pulley pointed at TDC, and the distributor rotor pointing 180 degrees opposite the timing mark, the could have been at TDC after completing the exhaust stroke.

To disable the immobilizer I've also tried placing jumpers at T6/5 and T6/6, as described on Dan's Alarm page.
      http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed...alarmhelp2.htm

Dan says to leave the alarm module disconnected?
Q - Do I leave the alarm box unhooked?

A - YES - Do not plug it back in!
      Starts, cranks, runs, then dies

On a whim I tried unplugged the MAF, it actually ran for a bit
I swapped the MAF from the junker that the engine was pulled from(which ran before the engine was pulled)
Starts and runs, but is very rough and eventually dies, but it's an improvement.

I've also tried swapping the throttle body from the junker. Tried the "chicken dance TBA" - disconnect battery, release charge, hook battery, put key in ignition till engine light illuminates, chicken dance while TB hums.
      -no luck

Hopefully a Vortexer who haves a VAGCOM will visit me to pull the codes and run a TBA... if you're in my area, you have a HEX+CAN vagcom, and you're willing to stop by my place(denver/lakewood) to pull the codes please message me!

      Also, any other ideas? Thanks!

      Figured it out!

Got virtual XP running from Win10 and I was able to get the codes and run TBA with my ebay cable.
Cleared the codes after running TBA, starts and runs, no codes. Time to drive!
