Just remember in this setup something needs to wear. Either the follower or the cam lobe. The follower is designed to wear first so you are not ruining a cam. There was a revision on the early lobes to make them harder as the cam lobe was wearing. I think people tried to see if there was a difference in the manufacture with the failures, but nothing definitive was found.
I don't disagree entirely, but I've been trying to figure out what is the main difference between how VW uses this design and how Mazda uses a fairly similar (if not identical) design in the Mazdaspeed 3. I trolled around their forums a bit and it seems like virtually no one ever replaces theirs (let alone checks them)...and when they do it is pretty minor compared to what we have on our cars.
tl;dr - the wear on the VW engine is abnormal, but why
Regarding the o-ring and the like, I haven't touched and of that stuff as the one that is on the pump is still in fine condition (tight in the lip, no splits, nicks, etc.). I just check the follower at about 5k and then again around 8k -- depending on how it looks I either replace it or let it ride.
Good info and definitely interesting. That said, I can't see how adding more consumable items to any modern vehicle is okay.
For this car, personally it's worth it to me. But still, seems odd. I didn't realize you guys checked these so often. I hope nothing is ruined on mine given that it has 30k already and it has never been checked.
Well no one thinks its "okay". It's just something we have to live with I suppose. VW had a reason(s) for using the FSI on the Mk6 Golf R.
Did any of you guys see HPA Motorsports thread about their new kit for APR Stage 3 cars? It speaks directly to the cam follower wear issue and fuel pressures etc. and I thought it was interesting to read.
i had read somewhere that the INA cam followr is the same manufacturer as the oem brand
