Just got my wife a new Mazda CX5 GT last week. I am curious if my Golf R will keep up with hers in the white fluffy stuff. Hers came stock with Toyo tires and I just put some nice conti dws06's on...
Not your typical mod discussion in this forum but I am excited to test the Haldex system as I just moved up from Florida and it has never seen a winter.
PS we traded her Jetta TDI which literally depreciated 1k over the past month due to the VW scandal. Not happy about that.
Golf R on snow tires tears it up in the snow. I can't comment on all seasons, since they aren't adequate where I'm at in the winter, but they're probably OK too.
That said, I think the GKN system in my wife's ALL4 Countryman does things a bit more intelligently in the snow than the Haldex does. I don't have a comp controller yet, but hers can push 100% of its power to the rear so it isn't apples to apples.
Dang, I guess I saw that in an outdated article. Nevertheless, with both cars wearing the same width/model snows, hers consistently pulls away better from a stop on ice. I've played quite a bit with them side by side.
Past 5-10mph, they're pretty much neck and neck. The GKN system does it better than stock Haldex below that though. Who knows, maybe it's all down to the seemingly more elegant traction/stability setup on the MINI. We'll have to see how the Wavetrac on mine helps this winter.
As far as Mazda's vs the R's AWD systems are concerned, you'll have to try em out and let us know
After running All-seasons through last Winter in Boston (destroying 2 stock rims), while I felt that I wouldn't get stuck somewhere, and could tackle all conditions, I didn't exactly feel as 'in-control' as I would have liked. This winter I am on 225/45/17 Nokian Hakka R2s, and I expect to be an absolute tank.
nokian all-weather tires are pretty good. granted, the WR G3 won't have the ultimate snow/ice grip of the Hakka R2. But great if you have a very variable winter.
I run Hakka R2's on my car for winter...and I spend most weekends in the mountains - car is a beast in the snow...never have any issues getting around and I don't hesitate going through the deep powder. My friends have pickup trucks and we always seem to pile in to the R to go anywhere. This has by far been my favorite/best ski car....
The R was really really well behaved and handled the snow with zero problems, the only time that it had a slight bit of trouble getting traction was with traction control off and ECS off. I tired to get it to lose grip with all of the nanny checks in place and it just wouldn't happen.
Mine are also 17s. That might be meaningful. I have no experience with 18s and snows on this car, since I have 17s for both summer and winter. The extra 1/2" of rubber may help.
I am running Hakka r2 tires on the stock wheels. No complaints in most conditions except that it I could turn back time I would either look for a skinnier 18" option or look at picking up a set of 17" wheels that are about 205-195 wide. I find that in some very slushy conditions the car can feel a bit floaty and that cuts down on my confidence. Other that that this car is very good when the white stuff comes.
