After two years of my GTI ownership, I am done with VW. It was a phenomenal car to drive, when it wasn't in service. When it got fixed, I didn't trust that it was done correctly, after my moon roof surround broke and flew off in 70mph traffic. At just a couple of thousand miles on the clock the air conditioning recirculation motor went bad. By about 10k the rubber gasket on the moon roof rotted and crumbled, causing the entire assembly to be replaced. Wrong adhesive was used multiple times.
When part of my roof broke and flew off in traffic, I was done. The day after I got the car back from service, which also included replacing both front hubs due to bad wheel bearings, it was traded in on the best daycare sled EVER!
The only tough part was convincing my wife .
The traffic laws in NC stipulate that a child can ride in a two seater, as long as a proper restraint system is used and passenger side airbags are disabled.
My daughter loves this car and makes me put the roof down every chance she gets.

How do you disable the passenger air bag on this?

My NB Miata had a switch to turn it off, but I don't know if any newer cars have these.

The seat cushions have sensors. The airbag is deactivated automatically when the child seat is set up.

I'd have concerns about the pressure from the child seat, since it's clinched down tight with the belt, confusing the sensor.

I mounted the child seat following the instructions in the car manual for installing a child restraint. I have full confidence that the system is functioning as intended.

I would imagine that there is an "airbag off" indicator for verification, isn't there?

You will not regret it. Such an amazing car. The best shifter I've ever experienced. LSD standard on the Club models. Fantastic brakes, even without the optional Brembos. Also, with 155hp on a 2400lb platform it is not slow by any means.

I had a chance to do a couple of quick laps around Pacific Raceways in an ND Miata last weekend. It's a lot of fun, and quicker than I expected (being a prior NA owner). Great choice!

It ails me as a car enthusiast to not have driven a miata. Though I would no longer purchase a newer model VW either.

What about the Fiat 124 Spider did you have thoughts of buying that too? I've seen my share of car magazines running head to head comparisons with the Miata and 124 already since for the most part they are siblings even if Fiat used a different motor in their car.
I'm a 1 percenter, who actually uses turn signals over 99% of the time for lane changes and turns too, even on my motorcycle

I did consider the 124. I like the looks of the Miata more, a lot more. I prefer the NA torque band of the Mazda. I think I also did not want to go from a VW to a Fiat, when my biggest gripe with the GTI was reliability. Besides, most of the comparisons I saw did not prefer the Fiat over the Mazda.

Congrats on the new car. I have yet to see a new Miata in the wild.

It sucks the mkvii gti is such a turd. I was planning on picking a used one up in a few years, after my student loans are paid off.

Is the MK7 generally considered an unreliable vehicle or should this be considered a lemon? Reason I ask is I've had my MK6 for 6 years/70k miles and it's been solid.

Well this is the first time I've heard of sunroofs flying off of one. Haven't been many sunroof issues in general. I think OP just had **** luck and a **** dealer. It's still early, but so far the mk7's seem pretty reliable, and initial build quality control is very good from what I've seen.
