Anyone get tired of personal technology? I am, and I'm an engineer by trade. I've been into computers, cell phones, media players... After a few years of smartphones (and tablets), it all feels so fatiguing.

I had some time to kill so I chilled out at my local Barnes and Noble. (Gasp, a brick'n'mortar store! Gasp, a bookstore!) I sat down with a coffee and few magazines (gasp, physical media!), and it was a peasant, relaxing way to pass the time while keeping up with my interests

Print got "replaced" by web pages, which were replaced by blogs, which were replaced by RSS, which was replaced by social media, which is being replaced by smartphone news apps... Somehow, reading print remains an awesome way to pass the time, and learn something in the process.

Anyone else feel the same? I'm sure most Millenials don't but I hope I'm wrong.

PS: Years ago I took a short break from all social media. Then a long break. Then I deleted all my accounts, and I've never looked back. All this before "fake news" was a "thing"

I do. For reading I prefer paper. Except for magazines lately. Most of the ones I like to read, Octane, for example, are British magazines and a subscription is ~$100/ year delivered. Even more if I purchase off the newsstand. In electronic form, its ~ $40/ year. I can get my subscription to Octane, Classic and Sports Car, and Classic Cars magazine for the same price as a print subscription of one.

I do agree that E-versions of print are a blessing. I sort of wish we had this tech when I was a student.

But magazines, like newspapers, are a dying medium. Everyone wants their content in ADHD-approved bite-size pieces. If it doesn't fit in a Tweet, it's seemingly unworthy of attention.

I only do digital subscriptions. I prefer reading print, but it seems so unnecessary to waste all those resources. I had a paper subscription to the economist for awhile, but it became so wasteful and I would have a few piled up at a time.

Plus for the financial times and wsj I can set up feeds that only show me stories i'm interested in.

If I could get autosport/F1 mag in print for a reasonable price, I'd opt for that. I like the pictures in print.

You do realize that, with a few updates to terms, this is the same gripe that has literally been recycled since at least the start of the industrial revolution?

I used pigeons to post on Vortex until PETA found out.

Fully agree with your comments. I don't have or use a smart phone, don't use social media, and subscribe to magazines that I want and do very little reading online and for sure don't get my news from social media or what is considered conventional news. Purchased a 17 GTI Sport 6MT as it had the fewest driver's aids (crutches) and is slightly lighter than the other models except for maybe the S. I thought that I might be the only one out there that felt as you do, glad there are a few more!

I still enjoy magazines every once in a while, especially enthusiast publications. But really the only time I ever pick them up is at the Barber or Dentist. My wife's guilty pleasure is US Weekly.

Gosh, remember the days when Grog used to recite the story of Thrag and the Spike around the fire? Then some smarty guy decided to draw the story on the wall, so no one had to listen to Grog. I mean, sure, he had an annoying lisp and rolled his R's, but we all listened.

I've been called a Luddite numerous times for my aversion to personal technology which is fine. It isn't a derogatory term to me. Yes, humans have always had short attention spans, but with reliance on the smartphone, humans do far less thinking about survival, and have given entertainment priority. The lazy function of our brains will be the downfall of humanity in the long-run.

IQ tests should now include a search function.
