Tipped off by a fellow enthusiast, I learned last week that Volkswagen is utilizing a now-defunct Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Illinois as one of three dumping grounds for the Dieselgate victims. From what I gather, this location serves as the storage facility for midwestern TDIs, with each of the two other locations on respective coasts of the country. As I was in the Bloomington-Normal area this past weekend, I took the opportunity to sneak a peek at what's going on at the plant (before security pulled up to the fenced gate and scared us off). Wish I had a better vantage point of the volume of cars sitting on the lot.

Looks more like a parking lot, not a dumping ground. The latter would be a giant pit full of burning cars.

You can blame it on the President
But what if it was you
Who was the White House resident?
Or could you save the starving children?
When there's so much else to do
With all the problems of the world
      Coming down on you

      So this is the way
This is the way to normal
      Show me the way
Show me the way to normal
      Alright

You can say my music's bull****
      In your uppity review
But if it was you here at this keyboard
      With all the people waiting
      To hear your next CD
And throw you in the garbage
      Or hail your masterpiece

      So show me the way
Show me the way to normal
      This is the way
This is the way to normal
      Alright

And all these corporations poisoning our air
      The children sad and hungry
      But they don't even care
      Let's get together people
We've got problems here to solve
Let's make this world a better place
Before there is no world at

This. "Storage lot" would be a more accurate name. During the height of the recession, automakers were storing surplus cars in parking lots all over the place.

What's stopping VW from applying the fix to the Gen III cars and reselling them? I'm assuming a lot of these will be back on the road (Sans perhaps the first gen cars)

If nothing else, hopefully they could sell them to dismantlers. I mean it's not like Cash for Clunkers where they have to be crushed or anything.

There is also apparently another storage lot at the old Bethlehem Steel site in Sparrows Point outside of Baltimore. My B-I-L saw a car carrier full of VWs heading in there and could see a bunch of cars already parked.

How fitting that VWs eco disasters are being parked at what should be a future superfund site.

I've got no skin in this game. But, I don't know what to feel.

A person paid for X and got Y. They could have reflashed them all, but then the consumer didn't get what they paid for.

But the waste, holy cow. It's just shocking. Reminds me of "Fake Plastic Trees". It makes my consumerism guilt feel pretty strong.

The Normal plant where the cars are being stored at was bought by an ELECTRIC car company called Rivian.

Weird, I see a bunch of cars, not 'victims'.

I'm amazed they're not allowed to simply take them out of the USA and sell them somewhere less discerning.

this actually surprises me as well.

yes i get the US/EPA wants to force VW to right their wrongs, but the buybacks and fines are supposed to do that right?

plus, they already sell cars in other countries with MUCH less strict emissions standards (or no standards) so i dont see the harm from that perspective.

Maybe it's a storage lot for the 2032 City Jetta.

Such as waste and a lot worse environmentally than the little bit of extra emissions they might have been putting out.

That's the irony. Scrap good cars to save the environment.
