US-spec deserves its own thread, especially since it has all been revealed at once.

Each refreshed model sharpens its looks and adds even more value over the outgoing version. The revised Golf family goes on sale this Fall as 2018 models. (The updated e-Golf is a 2017 model.)

An optional Driver Assistance and Lighting Package offers Lane Assist; Park Distance Control; Park Assist; Light Assist; and LED headlights.

      2018 Golf GTI

The original hot hatch rides into the 2018 model year with a power upgrade to the base trim and a simplified lineup of four-door models: S, SE and Autobahn. The 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder turbo now makes a standard 220 horsepower at 4,700 rpm and 258 pound-feet of torque at just 1,500 rpm (achieved with premium unleaded fuel) across the lineup. All three trims can be paired with either a six-speed DSG® automatic transmission or a six-speed manual.

The 2018 Golf GTI S has been updated with LED taillights, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), a 6.5-inch display for the Composition Color infotainment system, and automatic headlights with rain sensor. New for 2018, the S with automatic transmission offers a fuel-saving stop-start feature that shuts down the engine while at a stop, and restarts automatically when needed. There’s a new design for the 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, and the S continues to offer a performance value with features such as a rearview camera, leather-wrapped multifunction sport steering wheel, ambient and footwell lighting with LED reading lights, LED fog lights, and Car-Net App-Connect.

The updated SE model now features full LED headlights with a signature red GTI stripe outlining the new design, performance brakes from the Golf R and the electronically controlled, torque sensing, limited-slip VAQ differential. A new 8-inch display for the Composition Media system brightens the cabin, and the SE also adds upscale touches like Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert and Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring. The SE trim now features Clark Plaid cloth seating surfaces, with leatherette seating surfaces as an option. A sunroof is also optional in the SE trim. As in last year’s model, the SE offers the KESSY keyless access system, Voice Control, SiriusXM satellite radio with a three-month trial, and Car-Net Security & Service with a six-month trial.

At the top of the range, the Golf GTI Autobahn adds a new 8-inch touchscreen for the Discover Media navigation system and DCC suspension control. It continues to offer a panoramic power tilt and slide sunroof, leather seating surfaces, a 12-way power driver’s seat, Climatronic, ACC, the Fender Premium Audio System, and Car-Net Guide & Inform with a three-month trial.

The available Driver Assistance package on the Autobahn trim adds Lane Assist; Park Assist; Park Distance Control; and Light Assist, which automatically dims and engages high beams depending on oncoming traffic. Summer tires are available as an option on all trims.

      2018 Golf SportWagen

The Golf SportWagen is available with a 1.8L TSI engine mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed DSG automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, or with 4Motion all-wheel drive combined with a six-speed manual or the six-speed DSG automatic. S models are available in manual or automatic and have the option of front-wheel drive or 4Motion® all-wheel drive. SE and SEL SportWagen trims are only available with front-wheel drive and the six-speed DSG automatic transmission.

New for 2018 on the Golf SportWagen S are: LED taillights; LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs); a larger, 6.5-inch display for the Composition Color infotainment system; and automatic headlights with rain sensor. Outfitted with standard 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels (16-inch alloys for S 4Motion trim), the model also retains functional equipment from its predecessor, including Car-Net App-Connect; power reclining front seats; and cruise control. The S 4Motion trim continues to feature heated front seats as standard equipment.

The Golf SportWagen SE augments the S trim with a new 8-inch touchscreen for the Composition Media system; 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels; Front Assist; and Blind Spot Monitoring. Existing premium features include a panoramic sunroof; V-tex leatherette seating surfaces; Car-Net Security & Service with a six-month trial; Voice Control; SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a three-month trial; and KESSY keyless access with push-button start.

New offerings on the Golf SportWagen SEL include 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels; fog lights; an 8-inch display for the Discover Media navigation system; and auto-dimming interior rearview mirror. The existing upscale cabin environment of the Golf SportWagen SEL features a standard Fender® Premium Audio System; Car-Net Guide & Inform with a three-month trial; ACC; Climatronic; 12-way power driver’s seat; ambient lighting; and comfort sport seats.

The Golf R is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or—new for 2018 and exclusive to Golf R—a seven-speed DSG dual clutch automatic.

e-Golf press release from a couple months ago:

2017 E-GOLF OFFERS IMPROVED RANGE AND FUEL ECONOMY
      Feb 22, 2017

EPA releases official fuel-economy numbers for the new e-Golf

Increased battery capacity gives 2017 e-Golf an EPA-estimated range of 125 miles—a 50 percent increase over the previous model year
EPA-estimated 126 city MPGe and annual fuel cost of $550
Upgraded electric motor produces 134 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque

Herndon, VA, February 22, 2017 — Volkswagen of America, Inc., is pleased to announce fuel economy figures for the 2017 e-Golf. Compared to its predecessor, the new e-Golf offers an improved EPA-estimated range and fuel economy, as well as more power.

For 2017, Volkswagen is using a new lithium-ion battery with an increased energy capacity of 35.8 kWh from 24.2 kWh. The new battery helps increase the vehicle’s range from an EPA-estimated total range of 83 miles to 125 miles on a single charge. The 7.2 kW on-board charger is now standard on both SE and SEL Premium trims, which enables the battery to be charged in less than six hours at a 240V charging station. When equipped with DC Fast Charging (optional on SE, standard on SEL Premium), the battery can be charged to 80 percent within an hour at a DC fast charging station.

Improved battery chemistry also helps improve the overall fuel economy of the 2017 e-Golf. For city driving, the EPA estimated fuel economy is 126 MPGe; highway driving is rated at 111 MPGe, and combined city/ highway at 119 MPGe, improved over the 2016 EPA estimates of 126, 105 and 116, respectively. The 2017 e-Golf EPA estimates are the best in the Compact Class, as defined by the EPA.

The electric motor on the 2017 e-Golf has been upgraded as well. Where the 2016 e-Golf utilized an 85 kW electric motor developing 115 horsepower, the new 100 kW electric motor develops 134 horsepower. At the same time, the maximum torque of the electric motor has been boosted from 199 pound-feet to 214 lb-ft. The 2017 e-Golf runs zero to 60 mph faster than its predecessor—now in just 9.6 seconds—and its top speed increases to 93 mph.

In addition to these engineering improvements, the 2017 e-Golf is wallet friendly. Using 13 cents per kilowatt-hour, the EPA has estimated an annual fuel cost of just $550.

The 2017 e-Golf goes on sale this Spring. Pricing will be announced closer to market introduction.

Features and technical data apply to models offered in the USA. They may differ in other countries.

The e-Golf vehicle is only available at participating dealers in select states.

2017 e-Golf EPA estimated range is 125 miles. 2017 e-Golf EPA estimates: 126 city/111 highway MPGe. Actual mileage will vary and depend on several factors including driving and charging habits, accessory use, weather and topography, battery age, and vehicle condition. Battery capacity decreases with time and use. See owner’s manual for details.

Charge in under 6 hours is the approximate time with available 240V home charging wall box, purchased separately. Actual charge time will vary and depends on several factors including battery age and vehicle condition. Battery capacity decreases with time and use. See dealer or owner’s literature for limited warranty details.

Charges up to 80% in one hour requires charging at select DC fast charging stations. Frequent and consecutive high-voltage charging (including DC charging) can permanently decrease the capacity of the high-voltage battery. See owner's manual for details.

Where stated, fuel economy values (MPGe) are EPA estimates. See www.fueleconomy.gov for details. Actual mileage will vary and depends on several factors including driving habits and vehicle condition.

EPA estimated annual fuel costs are based on 45% highway, 55% city driving, 15,000 annual miles and current fuel price.

So this means the GTI Sport trim is limited to model year 2017 only? How exclusive!

So the GTI SE loses leather, the premium sound system, and possibly the panoramic sunroof.

Great news if you like the cloth seats (I certainly do) but I like my roof and tunes.

Still no 6-speed manual on the 1.8t Golf and no 1.5L engine option either.

Wow, I'm surprised VW brought the goods (digital dash and 8" center screen) for the R. It's neat that they're differentiating it from the rest of the lineup like that. Ditto the 7 speed DSG upgrade for people who swing that way. I'm surprised they added start/stop but ONLY to the DSG model. Seems strange.

Photos are likely not representative though -- I doubt we get the carbon leather seats in the R (which is a good thing, they're tacky as hell).

Looks like we still need to pay for a top-trip Alltrack to get non-halogen headlights though.... so, $32k for non-fugly headlights.

Does this mean we'll finally see some discounts on the pre-facelift R?

Great news if you like the cloth seats (I certainly do) but I like my roof and tunes.
Looks like the SE loses the Fender sound system too.

The wheels on the GTI and Golf R are ugly. I could live with the Golf, Golf Sprotwagen, or Altrack Wheels.

The photos are literally of the US-spec cars.

Too bad we didn't get the power boost. They always have to keep something for ROW.

It says the roof is an option in the se. I doubt they will make a standard roof as well as a pano roof for the same car.

So I just noticed that the tails are different between the GTI and the R. Is it possible one gets red blinkers and the other ambeR?

I really don't get the obsession with amber vs. red blinkers
