Was it more of a 70s or 80s trend? I think it correlates with the trend of golden or bronze plated windows on office buildings in the 70s and the 80s. Here in Europe we have some mid 80s car examples:
I think for cars in Europe it was mostly big in 1981-1985. In the 70s it was non-metallic beige and browns (in addition to greens, yellows and oranges) that were big.
The closest tints today are either too dark/brownish or too gray. Am I the only one who digged that look? I also liked matching velour interiors, it's so 80s and I remember those cars were still everywhere when I was a kid in the 90s. While bronze metallic was of its time, imo it sure has aged better than 90s teal and purple tints (I like them too but they seem to have aged worse). I call it the "yuppie/businessman tint" as it makes cars look more formal than they are and also similar shades were popular for suit coats in the 80s and early 90s in my area.
