      Hmm, source?
Any idea on engines in each of these?

I guess the Jetta has been slowly moving towards the GLI anyways with the recent suspension changes. The only real differentiation used to be the Engine size between the GLI & Jetta. Everything else was usually minor.

oh shoot. I did not even realize it was only Canada. Then that really sucks.
      I love my GLI!

I wonder why they would discontinue it only in Canada.

I won't be shocked if GLI goes away in the States for a while too. Especially for a couple years once they switch to MQB.

dude you live on the border, just buy 1 across the lake and drive 1 across the border. Sure thats alot of papers to fill out and maybe import tax but much easier than someone that lives far into canada

I've suspected for a while now that the GLI is a dying breed. With the GTI, Golf AllTrack, new Arteon, and an Audi A3 that starts at $31K, I've seen a lot of reasons for VW to cut ties with the GLI. It's not a great seller (never has been), and VW is looking to make cuts wherever they can.

In the northeast, it isn't uncommon for a lot to only have 1 GLI, and to have that GLI sit on the lot for 8-12 months.

The GLI is not dead, but will leave to gain hype for its MQB comeback in 2020. New jetta is due for 2019, so they will hold the GLI back for a year and drop it from 18, so they can hype it up in the future. It should help our resale, no? All rumors of course I also heard through the grapevine that the MQB GLI will have a futuristic powertrain. Electric/gas combo good for 260hp... same as rumored mk8 GTI.

I don't think anything is going to help VW resale at this point post dieselgate. It was bad before but now it's truly awful. They barely build 3000 GLIs a year and have trouble even selling that many which leads me to believe there's not a lot of demand for our cars in particular. It's a real shame that VW doesn't push them 1/2 as much as GTIs and drop the price some. It's such a good, fun, and practical car.

haha I am not complaining, just seems odd considering there is not much difference between Canadian & US GLI.

^^ What 1911 said. As of right now, there is zero confirmation that the GLI will make a return with the new platform. Remember, prior to 2006, the Jetta GLI didn't exist, and while the GLI name has been around for 33 years now, it hasn't been in the VW lineup every year since then.

VW is undergoing some big changes right now, and they're going to need to cut redundancy in order to survive (similar to what Ford had to do with Mercury a while back, GM with Pontiac, etc). VW and Audi models used to have very definitive differences, but with Audi luxuries now focusing on technology rather than performance, the models between the two companies are becoming blurred.

With the Golf AllTrack, VW made a point that it will produce a car that takes away from Audi sales, but only if it sells. At this time, it looks like the AllTrack is going to be a huge hit. I have seen 3 GLIs in my entire state, and was passed by 4 AllTracks today alone.

We can keep our hopes up all we want, but at this point it seems like a 50/50 chance that the GLI makes a return for the next generation Jetta.

Yeah, I bought my GLI used last year during the dieselgate hype and got a sweet deal on a used one.

      2012 DSG,Fender,NAV,Leather with 50k KM(32k Miles) for 16.8k+tax Canadian. so around 12.5k USD.

I would imagine if the 2017's stay on the lot through 2018 we could get some pretty sweet deals. Gonna keep my eye out

here's what the 2018 jetta interior will look like apparently.

I liked the mk3-mk6 models for sure, almost never see the 2017 gli's.

mk7 jetta facelift not that impressive imo they do such minor changes. this 2018 seems like a big change in design though

Pretty sure that was an Arteon concept photo. FYI - the Arteon looks nothing like that now that it's entering production:

I disagree with the 50/50 statement based on my conversations with folks. The GLI as of right now is happening and set for some rather positive changes to address many of the complaints we all have with the current one. Should be a pretty interesting car once it lands here. Unfortunately it's a ways off due to the whole product release cycle of VW's.

      There were GLI's in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

      2003 - 2004 24v VR6
      2004.5 - 2005 1.8t (much nicer cars)

I hope that is true. Another GLI would definitely be a strong candidate for my next car in 4/5 years if it comes back and is badass.

You're right - not sure where I grabbed those numbers from (I think Wikipedia failed me). But, over the past 30 years, there have been instances where a GLI wasn't produced.

A3 chassis cars didn't have the GLI badge. We got the "GLX" which was the VR6 powered cars.

I dont feel bad, our 2017 GLI's were "SEL" only, and our leather seats are REAL leather in 2016 and 2017
