UTI grads on victory lane, where do they all work? vw, nissan, porche etc... and did any go thru the manufacter's program to get jobs at bergstrom? and did they need previous experience in mechanics at a shop?
-caseyi dont like selling either. i'm doing it again starting monday unless someone else has something better for me.
when i say victory lane i'm just referring to the bergstrom stores - porsche, bmw, mb, jag, rover, volvo, lexus. i can think of a handfull that i know for sure did manufacturer specific programs, and were hired pretty much right out of school. i dont know if they had previous shop experience, but uti is pretty much that - half the school is hands on, and then i believe you have a shop job after school every day

Damn, I went to Kohl's to buy my "big buck" embroidered sweatshirt, but they're all sold outBrian

normal offset for the mk3 is 33 mm as far as the tech school rant i will say that i believe the tech is by far one of thee best schools in the country.. i have heard nothing but bad things about uti...you get jack sh@t for hands on experience in uti as far as the tech that is all you do you do have classroom work but compared to the time you are in the shop it is almost nothing. with uti all you do is read books and have lectures very minimal time in the shop i know this from a good friend that went there and dropped out for this very reason. casey i say you get in good with a bergstrom have them pay for all your schooling and have a good job waiting for you let me know if your interested i can probably hook you up!!!![]()

Just a few Random thoughts about Tech Schools, dealerships, etc from the top of my head. :Pros: This is an easy foot into the dealership door. You start out on an hourly wage for X months and if you are good they will keep you and put you on higher flat rate pay. Employee discount can be a good thing at times. Being able to browse the parts computer is priceless. Access to shop manuals (old and new) is also priceless. If you become friends with the older techs or techs with similar interests they will help you out to a point. UTI weeds out the loser kids with a strict policy on attendance, dress, etc. You can get a job at a far away dealer and wait for an opening at your dealer of choice if they were not currently hiring. Many dealers will pay for your ASE test fees and send you to the "Learning Center" so you can learn the new models/engines/etc. ASE tests and Learning Center credit is good for any dealer you may work for.
Cons: UTI seems abit high priced for what you get. When you get out you are not done learning how to do the basic workday, you still need to develop logical troubleshooting skills, and you need to always be completely aware of what you are doing at all times ( please work safe ). Not all of the dealers will pay you your $15.50 or whatever starting wage UTI promises. Some dealers will screw you out of that if you don't go through the agent guy and go directly to them. You may have to move far away to get a job at a dealer. Senior techs may not like the "new guy" as many see them as someone taking from their paycheck either by taking work away or by wasting their time to train the "new guy". The service advisors/dispatchers may give you advanced work that you are not ready for and blame you when you mess it up ( a normal part of learning... just don't do it again! ). Working at a dealer can put you into the middle of a big soap opera that you want nothing to do with.
Final thoughts: I started out in 92' as a dealer used car mechanic and worked my way into VW before there was a big UTI program to find people like us. If I was going to try and get in fresh today I would probably go to the local tech school as they seem to have a better hands on expieriance. UTI does have better connections with the dealerships as far as job placement goes from what I can see. I have seen about 5 UTI grads, one Wyo Tech grad, and 5 high school program kids come through in my time at a small dealer.
Sorry for the long run on post!

Now I'm curious....what are you general thoughts of each of the above groups. Throw in the Shade tree mechanic that's decieded to make a go of his hobby.
Rate based on Technical. ability, troubleshooing techniques, and real world insight.
Believe it or not, PC repair is a very similar profession to car work. I know how I feel about each of the above "class" of new employee. I just want to see if it holds true in the other major troubleshooting profession.

i think to sum up the schools - anyone can turn a wrench, but it takes a good tech to develop diagnostic skills. thats what the schools gets you ready for. in the cases of the guys who didnt like the schools because of that, they probably had a different expectation and when they got there, couldnt or wouldnt adjust

Check it out, I got myself a SWEET new PC!!!!!
I'm thinking of building another one in a Mini ATX case for the car...lol. It'll be mounted in the trunk and have virtual input from a dash mounted wood grain interface!!!
GPS is a bit tricky and requires the optional slide rule, Graphite marking device and tri-fold mapping module.
I call it the Carabacus.

hey guys thank you for all your help... it looks like im gonnab be calling UTI and telling them that i want to rethink things... i've heard multiple times that UTI isnt what they say it is... i like the idea of moving away and starting over but i would honestly rather stay around here and get my career started. i like the sounds of the bergstrom program thru the tech. tyler i will be in touch with you very soon to talk about what you did and maybe if i can go the same route.of the uti grads that currently work at berstrom or where ever, did they have previous experience or did they get placed directly out of school?
thanks again guys - TGIF

-CaseyI looked into going to school at UTI. All I can say is BRIBERY. Their rep that came up here was always throwing money at us. I went to the tour and the dude handed me a $50. I say go down there and milk your rep, but don't sign up.
