DIY - Replacing the dust pollen filter (also know as the cabin filter)

I wish I had read this before trying it the first time. I of course broke the left side tab off. I tried to do this in my cold garage in Dec. Warmer weather makes the plastic more pliable and less likely to break. I also was WAY MORE PATIENT the second time, with a new cover in hand. You have to lift up on the surrounding plastic a bit as well (all easier in warm weather) and wiggle it in. I think replacing this filter is important due to the possibility of taxing the poor fan motor if the filter is clogged-I think replacing the filter is better that just cleaning it (just my opinion) for this reason.

just changed mine for the first time at 52000km's. Long overdue to say the least. I used the A/C disinfectant and everything should be good to go.

Outstanding write-up.

I just changed my filter at 110k miles. I've had the car since 70k miles and don't know if it has ever been changed. I got the grayish looking OEM filter from Performance Cafe but the filter I took out was almost 2X the weight of the one I replaced it with. That's a lot of crap caught in there!

FYI, I gave this a try on my 2002 GTI today, and the part I got was 1J0-819-644-A. So I crack open the filter in the car and the part # on that filter was 1H0-819-644-B... Not thinking too much about it, I tried to put in the new 1J0 one in and found that it was pretty much impossible to jam back in the slot. On a second look comparing the two filters, I noticed the 1J0 was a bit taller than the 1H0 that was originally in the car, which would explain the trouble I was having. It's weird because I searched on the 1st VW Parts website and 1J0 is listed for 99 to 04 models of GTI, and 1H0 is for Passats (also noted beside the part is 'New Style').

Guess it's time to return this filter

Great stuff.. I never even thought of the Pollen Filter untill i saw the maintenance schedule. I hit the 40k miles on my 02 GTIs and didn't quite get all the required maintenance done. Now i'm going down the list throught the search... Thanks alot for posting this DIY hope to find more

They sell some stuff at the dealer and it smells really good, but it didn't work all that well and it wasnt cheap. Frigi-fresh I think it is called. The only reason I got it was because some dude in parts used it on his car and almost the whole can was left over and he didn't need it.

I would try some lysol air cleaner of some fabris.

i say screw buying a new filter.. i just poped mine out and sprayed it with the air gun at work.. madd dust came out.. smaked it ont the floor once or twice and sprayed again... worked good.. i noticed when i cleanded it the air vents by my feet blew alot better but thats about it
