I just picked up an 81 and 82 rabbit pickup and on the 82 I don't seem to have brakes all the obvious has been looked. I checked the vacum at the brake servo vacuum pump and there is very little there. The manual suggest that I replace the diaphragm and clean the inside of the pump has anyone else encountered this and are the diaphragms easy to find or should I just buy a used pump somewhere?

Ok just in case anyone else is having this problem the diaphragm inside the vacum pump had a hole in it the rebuild kit for the pump cost 12 bucks and took 10 minutes to fix I had a bentley but it wasn't at all necesary any way my brakes are like brand new.

There is also a second rebuild kit that includes the plastic valves in the head of the pump. Often they go bad if the engine has some blowby. If the pump works with the new diaphram, then the valves are OK, but if not, check the valves. I also installed a vent line from the crank case to the valve cover into which the vacuum pump vented. In stock form the pump vents into the crankcase, any bit of over pressure there and the pump valves are popped out and ruined.

    Holy thread resurection!

Used the search and found this. I just did the rebuild on both valves and the diaphragm. Pump now works.....yay.

However, I have a strong oil leak around the base where it bolts to the block. Did I not align it properly? Is there a gasket that needs to be replaced? Thanks

There's an o-ring in the base of the vacuum pump. It's either missing or has been squashed flat. Easy fix, but I don't know the exact size; see if your local napa or other quality auto parts store has a o-ring bin that you can look through...
