 The Unofficial Vortex English Language Reference Guide« »

In the interest of preserving English language in its original form, I have put together a reference list of commonly misused or confused words. The number of offenders is quite high around here, which is not surprising given the large subscriber base. Hopefully, someone will learn something. Enjoy!

----------------------------------------------------
Are = The apples are green.
Our = Our apples are green.

Affect = Weight affects handling.
Effect = Weight has an effect on handling.
(thanks to what)

Brakes = The brakes are things that stop your car.
Breaks = Sometimes the brakes break and you have to fix them.
(thanks to 98JettaGT)

Here = I am here in this place.
Hear = I hear that music.

Its = Its fender was bent.
It's = It's a bent fender.

Quiet = That car was pretty quiet.
Quite = That car wasn't quite what I expected.

Their = That was their car.
There = Check the shelf over there.
They're = They're not coming.

Then = I need to finish this; then we can talk.
Than = He is taller than I.
(thanks to driversaferly)

To = preposition
Too = also
Two = 2
Example: "I went to the dealer and spent too much money on my two VWs.
(thanks to jbx2)

Sore = My eyes are sore from trolling through the Vortex forums all day.
Soar = That plane is soaring high.
(thanks to 90hp '86camry)

Truely = does not exist
Truly = This is truly a sports car.
(thanks to driversaferly)

Unique
Very unique = improper use. Either something is unique or it isn't.
(thanks to hawc)

Would of = simply wrong
Would've = I wish I would've known.

Your = This is your car.
You're = You're crazy.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Do you have more examples? Please post them and I'll add them here. Let's save English from turning into Internenglish.

Your friendly neighbourhood grammar Nazi.

P.S. This is not intended to fix spelling errors, but rather obvious examples where one word with different meaning is used to substitute for the correct one. Some obvious exceptions exist.

If you have a few hours, please see the following excellent resource posted by what: http://www.wsu.edu/%7Ebrians/errors/errors.html.

wrong grammer nazi. "its fender was bent" is possessive. "it" being the possessor or owner of the fender. so "its" in that sentence would still have an apostrophe between the "t" and "s."

all together now: "it's fender was bent."

maybe you should brush up on your grammer skills.

Ummm...no. You're wrong. This is the one case where the possessive doesn't have an apostrophe. "it's fender was bent" is equivalent to "it is fender was bent" - clearly wrong.

here's one:

I need to finish this up first, then we can talk.

another:

it's truly that's the correct word, whereas "truely" doesn't exist.

Handling, not handeling or handleing.

Brakes - things that stop your car
Breaks - when things stop working as they are intended to

Thanks for moving it to the Help Forum.
I guess the real audience is not necessarily here, but it will keep this from being locked after a couple of heated exchanges.

Please do not flame in this post. It is meant to help, not to offend.

All these rules also apply to the writing on a port-o-potty wall.
I'm a new construction plumber and have to use them quite frequently and there is always some dumb asses that think it need to be a bulletin board.
Normally I do not participate, but when I see "There" in the wrong context or "Quite" instead of "quiet" I feel the need to correct it for them along with some sort of moron comment.
I guess I'm the port-o-potty grammar police

However I am also prone to mistakes on the forum and forgoet to spell check now and again.

Good one. Thanks!
I hope you were demonstrating incorrect use of "effect" in your example.

I have added this:
Affect = Weight affects handling
Effect = Weight has an effect on handling.

Thanks for starting this thread, but I don't think those who need to read it will do so. If they can't write, they probably can't read and or spell. Any way I often see inappropriate use of to and too.

I went to the dealer and spent too much money on my two VWs
