Sootin' Up The Tail of the Dragon...« »

Hello,

I recently completed my run of the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. My total trip to Memphis and back actually went quite well and only took three days instead of the expected four (I had estimated an extra day to drive the fun roads). I left the DC area at 5:30am Thursday to get out before rush hour plugged up the roads. I stopped just short of Nashville for my first fillup (49-mpg). I spent the night in Jackson, TN and picked up up my daughter who had spent the summer with her grandparents in TX. We had an easy drive to Vonore, TN the next day and spent the night so we could hit the twisties good and early the next morning.

I possibly could have driven another 200-miles on my remaining fuel. But I filled up anyway (46-mpg) in case I used more fuel than expected. I was pretty certain there would be a shortage of diesel fuel on these roads. Here are some photos to share:

I started my run up the Cherohala Skyway at about 8:15am. I drove from 880 ft to over a mile high...

My descent was long and almost completely off the go-pedal. After a while, I noticed this...

For the record, "mpg" is not instantaneous. Had I displayed that value, it would have read, "999" for just about the entire descent. Instead, "mpg" is the average economy for a given segment of the trip. The "mpt" value is the average for the entire tank. So the number in the photo is a result of my climb to the summit. I was curious to see how much more the numbers would change as I coasted in gear down the mountain.

Check this out...

The more I coasted, the higher both of my economy numbers would climb. And check out the EGTs. The exhaust was so cool on that descent that the engine and turbo were almost cool to the touch. The engine was practically just passing air through it with no combustion.

That fuel saving game came to an end after a while. But look at how much the "mpt" value rose...

BTW, Cherohala Skyway was pretty sweet. Not quite as twisty as TOTD. But a good drive nonetheless. I only encountered a few other vehicles. They were all going the other way. I hit the NC end of the Tail of the Dragon at about 9:30. We stopped at the "Tail of the Dragon Store" for a break. Then we headed out and took just a few photos....

The crew at US129Photos.com took several photos of my car along the way. I will order a CD. But here's one I lifted from their site...

I finally got out of the twisties around 12:30 and headed home to SE VA, arriving just after 9pm. In short, I drove from Vonore, over the Cherohala Skyway, through the Tail of the Dragon, and another 520+ miles home without even seeing the low fuel light. I made the entire trip with only two stops for fuel and my voyage ended pretty close to sea level...

In closing, here are my fuel stops, including the one I just made to document my economy through the last leg of the trip:

635 miles / 12.7 gals for 50 mpg
507 miles / 11.02 gals for 46 mpg
660 miles / 13.43 gals for 49 mpg

Ahhhh, I love my TDI!

Scott

Nice car nonetheless. Looks like a fun time.

Edit: Was thinking, with all that gear, you should pay someone to surprisingly kidnap you and the car with a full tank of gas and drop you off in the middle of nowhere, and make you find your way home. I bet it'd be a blast with that car.

All the more reason I wanted a TDI before I picked up the VR6. Not so sure I could make the switch now, but this post makes it that much more enticing.

There is only one thing i dislike about driving a TDi.

After I fill up, my hands smell of diesel for ages, even if i wear gloves.

My daughter goes to TX each summer to visit my parents. This year we opted to meet halfway. Jackson, TN is about halfway. So that was were we met up.

You must be filling up at a station with old, sloppy nozzles. I've only had that problem a few times in the past ten years... and I NEVER wear gloves. Most of the stations in my area have new nozzles. So maybe I'm lucky.

Take Care,

Scott

I really didn't take many photos. There's not a lot of room for stopping to take in the scenery. Here are the shots that aren't already posted:

A view from Cherohala...

A closer look at what I thought was a barely visible shack...

Another one on the dams (the road immediately snakes to the top of this dam)...

A special road crossing for flying squirrels on the Cherohala... REALLY...

The other shots taken by the US129Photos.com crew...

The speed limit is 30mph. I'm pretty certain I only got up to 35mph. But I can see where I could have done 45 or 50 in some areas if I really wanted to flog it. But there are a few really good reasons not to speed on the Dragon: 1) You'll always be on someone's ass wishing they'd just pull over or drive off a cliff; 2) I had a car full of luggage and didn't want to get stupid; and 3) STRICT law enforcement on the TN side. I saw six LEO's in an eight mile stretch of road! And TailoftheDragon.com says they love to write tickets. You also have to really be on the lookout for drivers/riders who cross the double-yellow line. High speed videos on the Dragon are cool. But those are best done in the off-season when tourism and enforcement are lower and said stunt-drivers are only risking their own lives. BTW, there are about two deaths on the Dragon per year since 2000. I believe I read the Cherohala has more although it's not as twisty or crowded.

Scott

I've been there. It's a blast. We were scraping pegs all morning. Very slippery though. The road doesn't get much sunlight, so there tends to be a lot of mossy areas. Honestly, we enjoyed the Cherohala skyway much more because of the higher speeds. It's definitely worth going to though.

Two years ago, US129 wasn't nearly as crowded with cops, it just happened fairly recently. Motorcycle riders love this road, but the recent bolstering of the police force quieted it down a lot.

Hello,

Quote, originally posted by d1rtyj4k3 »

I guess that depends on what you mean. My "regular" mixed driving commute usually gets me about 43-mpg in the summer and 46-mpg without AC. But you have to consider that's with DC traffic as well as weekend commutes on the highway. The fill-ups on my Memphis trip are fairly typical of highway driving with my car. Here are the fill-ups brought forward again:

635 miles / 12.7 gals for 50 mpg
507 miles / 11.02 gals for 46 mpg
660 miles / 13.43 gals for 49 mpg

I wasn't driving like a granny, either. Here's a shot of my Navi at the end of my journey I forgot to post:

I drove 71-mph with no AC for the first 400 miles of the first tank; and then 76-mph with AC for the rest. The second tank was all higher speeds and with AC, usually around 76-mph, but you can see 76-mph was not my max. I hovered around 80 quite a bit, too. The last tank gave me some help with the long descent on Cherohala. BUT, I did have to climb as well. I ran without AC in the twisties since it was cool. But the AC was on once I hit the Interstate for the return trip home.

I am very certain this car will still pull off 53-55 mpg if I keep it at 60-mph, drive with no AC, and can keep from dying from boredom. Maybe I'll try an MPG run someday when it's a little cooler and I have some time to kill.

Scott

Ahhh,

Some can't see the bigger picture. My friends say, "I'll bet you're kicking yourself for having a diesel now..." I say, "Why? Yes, it sucks to pay $60 for a fill-up. But I'll drive 700 miles before I need to fill again. How 'bout you?" <silence follows>

Even if diesel was $1.00 more per gallon than regular unleaded or even premium unleaded (and it isn't):

1800 miles / 49 mpg (1998 EPA) x $5/gal = $183.67 for TDI
1800 miles / 31 mpg (1998 EPA) x $4/gal = $232.25 for 2.slow
1800 miles / 25 mpg (1998 EPA) x $4/gal = $288.00 for VR6

But the actual prices here in SE VA and along my route were more like this:

1800 / 49 x $3.99 = $146.57 for TDI
1800 / 31 x $3.46 = $200.90 for 2.slow
1800 / 25 x $3.66 = $263.52 for VR6

So yeah, it's "more expensive" to fuel a TDI alright...
