Post Title: JOM Lowering caps (Before/After)
Posted by: Dan J Reed at 8:31 PM 6-27-2006

Installing some JOM "lowering caps" - um yea. Its easy, but a total waste of time IMHO.

I had to replace my strut bearings anyhow... and fix a dust boot and bump stop.. so here goes..

BEFORE - H&R Cup Kit - Stock spring hat.

Old VS new

AFTER = WASTE OF TIME = No noise, but the fact is - these did nothing to lower my car.

My Engine

Screw you cardomain.

****ty.

Tell me about it.

At least all and all it was like a 30 min job, and I had to adjust my camber anyhow..

Post Title:
Posted by: Luke9583 at 8:34 PM 6-27-2006

It raised your car an 1/8th inch...... lol :|

Post Title: Re: JOM Lowering caps (Dan J Reed)
Posted by: georgekelp at 8:36 PM 6-27-2006

That's lame!

Did you replace your strut mounts too?

Did you replace them with 2.0 or VR mounts?

If you changed them with VR mounts, then the vr ones just counteracted the drop of the lowering caps.

If you got new 2.0 ones and the old ones were worn out then maybe it raised it a little.

If neither of the above that is really super lame man.

I'll keep this in mind in the future.

Post Title: Re: (Luke9583)
Posted by: Dan J Reed at 8:36 PM 6-27-2006

Yea, I think part of my be the new strut bearings... my old ones were really, really hammered..

Big time.

Flat.

(They were 2.0 bearings, old style... same type replaced...)

when i put new strut mounts in my car got raised up quite a bit. my old ones were really shot and one was even ripped.. i bet thats what raised your car.

Post Title:
Posted by: Sirsmit418 at 8:40 PM 6-27-2006

i think its actually higher..

Post Title:
Posted by: A.Wilder at 8:47 PM 6-27-2006

did u drive it at all and give the spring a chance to "settle"?

ATHF RULES......

I saw about a 15mm drop after installing mine...

Post Title:

I thought about lowering caps before. But not anymore.

Dan

Post Title: Re: (MerryBerry)
Posted by: Dan J Reed at 9:40 PM 6-27-2006

Yea, I duuno, I'm pretty bummed..

I mean, on the upside now that I got a nice 1.0(-) camber per side - car handles LIKE A DREAM! - and the strut bearings were falling out... so meh... I was there... thought I'd give it a shot.

So I feel like I had the wheels off for a good reason..

But still, 45$ - down the crapper.

As for things comming down, the springs and cup kit are well used, very well used.. and I am sure unless I get some sag 4 years from now out of the mounts, I'll never see that 15mm again.

I'm glad you could all learn from my mistakes. Moe was right.

my car sits lower than all my friends 60/40........................maybe my kit is older and has more sag or the caps actually worked on my car. i need new strut mounts though too so yea its gonna be a little higher soon anyway

Stupid question to ask you, but i'll ask anyway. Did u take it for a drive after the install? She also needs to go lower.

edit..i'm too tired and didn't read that people already asked this question.

Early style 2.0 bearing equipped cars had the caps, I've put them on my vr6 bearing equipped car (thanks to the PO after a coilover install) and for some reason they pop off?

You're right. They only stay on the 93-95 2.0 bearings and on Mk2's. They won't stay on VR6 bearings. It fits right over them but I don't know why they don't stay on.

iirc, these thing don't work on any aftermarket suspensions

well think of it this way: if the strut bearings raised your car, then think of how much higher the car would have been if you kept the stock caps

They dont work because of the ammount of "drop" the 2.0 vs the VR6 struts travel (meaning, at the top of the strut where its held into the fender... the top "cap" as it were).

If you put them on the VR6 or new style - the cap bottoms out on the strut tower and pops off.

IMHO VW got rid of them with the new design as a cost saving measure.

dont worry, the new strut bushings will settle 10mm or so over the next few months.

update this thread in september. i bet its lower.

i can definitely see a difference in those before and after shots posted by soccergk...

i wonder if it has to do with the suspensions + strut mounts being used...any info on those for those setups?

I told you to cut your springs....

Post Title: Re: (Ghetto-8v)
Posted by: jhayesvw at 1:25 PM 6-28-2006

so,

the JOM ones will NOT work with vr6 style struts?? thats odd, because if the top cap is small in diameter, then it is for the 96.5 and later style suspensions with ALL came with VR6 style strut bearings.

im confused.
although Dan has a 95, so he should have large spring diameter parts

cut springs makes them weaker. not worth it.

get coils and be as low as you want

Post Title: Re: (2ohgti)

Yea... coils....

Heather, I'm off for the summer, if you want to give them a shot, come on down. Really.

Dan, did you do a write up?

Post Title: Re: JOM Lowering caps (wulfshrunting)
Posted by: DerDaniel at 1:47 PM 6-28-2006

i also got these things from jom (or was it from bonrath ?)

there are two versions in germany out there. one for the normal chassis (4 hole rims) and for the "plus-achse" (5 hole rims, 115hp and above)
you must have the right one for your springs-diameter

but anyway, this kind of "tuning" is crap. my set destroys my shockabsorber from fk. after that i buy a thread chassis (in german gewindefahrwerk), screw it in the right height i wanna have and voilá : perfect!

Maybe if you cut a coil that is active.

Post Title: Re: JOM Lowering caps (DerDaniel)
Posted by: Dan J Reed at 1:56 PM 6-28-2006

Oh, dont get me wrong, these fit my springs/struts/mounts fine.

They just did nothing in the way of a drop for me.

I'm starting to think. I'm pretty sure my passengerside unit was hammered (the spring cap) - Meaning it was "crushed" slightly from the shoddy job the PO did (or hit something?)... that may have been a "home made" set of lowering caps...

I should have measured both left/right sides... hmmm... yup.. looking at them the passengerside one is smashed for sure..

I bet I got the 10mm on the drivers side, but there was no change on the passengerside... Since the old cap was smashed already... hmmm..

I'm not making this up...

Car does handle great with the new camber number tho.

Post Title: Re: JOM Lowering caps (Dan J Reed)
Posted by: bosoxfan455 at 9:17 PM 6-28-2006

heres my before/after. the only difference is i went from a 185 to a 195 tire.

looking at the pictures of your caps compared to the same shot i took of mine it looks backwards. from what i gathered looking at the stock caps, lowering caps are effective by raising the top spring perch. the difference is the height from where the spring sits. i know my description isnt worded the best but think about the whole concept comparing Dan's caps and these. think about how the spring sits against these at the top of the strut.

Post Title:
Posted by: CruiseVW at 9:23 PM 6-28-2006

not sure if its relavent, but I have H&R coils and every time I raise or lower them it takes a day or 2 for them to settle again. I have no clue as to why. But it is always lower the next day or so then when I initially dropped it. So now I factor that in when adjusting them. Like jhayesvw said give it a few weeks.

heating weakens them. cutting a dead coil just makes you lower.

i just bought the car, and it's got new bilstein sports on her, would i be able to safely put new springs on the car while they haven't been abused yet? i'm looking to drop the car not extremely low but at the same time i don't want to keep her looking like a 4x4 =]

I feel your pain but I really think your new strut bushings counteracted the drop. I put these on my car without replacing the bushings and it brought my car down noticeably. Now when i go to replace my bushings soon, I will probably be depressed too.

why would you hit subframe with half inch lowering caps? you could use these on any suspension. most likely a cup kit just to get that rake. so i guess im not understanding your question
