There's already a rochester dub club. http://www.dubr.com, Good guys, just not terribly active.
When school is in session, there is a rather large group that meets at RIT.

But that has to be better than living on the lake in Lakewood, Ohio
But in all seriousness, thanks for coming into a thread for a location 1,300 miles away from you.
And OP, just stating my opinion is all, and as Matillac85 said, most of the people there are students, and for half the year they are all back home and out of town, that's why most people hang out in the Upstate thread. And the thread has been dry a bit, but that's b/c a lot of us have had projects/ build-ups going on and aren't able to get on all the time.

It already below seal level to let you know and the local government has nothing to do with the levees, its the Army Corps of engineers.dont even get me started about Ohio..never been to Lakewood but other parts of Ohio is pretty hick and seems inbred.
if your into that kinda thing.
SO You know i live near New Orleans and work here for now but HOME is West Henrietta!!! The job i got out of school was too good to pass up.
All BS aside, i hope a GTG is started because for having one of the biggest VW dealers in NY there arent many enthusiasts that live in Rochester, plus nothing will probably ever come of a GTG being formed in New Orleans.

Actually, in order to start the levee project, the local governments had to propose the project to the Army Corps of Engineers.

Nice and open minded I see. And what you are describing also is the definition for a good chunk of western NY. But only southern Ohio is hick, mainly b/c is was never fully developed (and borders on Kentucky)
But I only live in this state b/c of the awesome job I got, and my now future wife lives here. So there, we both have our reasons for being asshats online and for defending our views.

| Hey, there is a show in syracuse on sunday that you guys should come out to. I understand it isnt worth a drive for a simple g2g but this is a real sweet show that would deffintly be worth you time to drive out to. Its on the west wnd of oneida lake and I will get a link to the info once I get home. |
Or... we could meet up here, come on guys, I think all of us are trying to meet up with some local dubbers, not drive hours away when we can have our own g2g here and do a bit of cruising.
But honestly, if you're in Rochester, stop by, if everyone always leaves town, this thing will never get bigger!!

That being said, we are truing to get some (read) local dubbers for a little g2g here. I have also gone to the rit g2g, but that g2g obviously is more frugal, and doesn't happen in the summer.
Again, I would appreciate if you guys would quit trying to divert this g2g and once you guys go back to school, we would be happy to converge the two g2g's for that time. What do you guys gain by basically telling us not to do this? I have met both of you (I think) and don't understand the reasoning of trying to downplay this g2g.
To everyone else, who does not have time, or does not want to go to Syracuse, meet is still on Sun at 2. See you there.

And, by wanting to stay local, does this mean you're not going to go to H2Oi? Cause that's a show I'd sure like to miss.
Post Title: Re: (Kabinotar)
Posted by: nexpert at 12:06 AM 8-10-2008
I always seen a ton of VW's in the Rochester area, many of whom I havn't seen at the rit meets, which btw aren't anything to speak of either. So by starting up a loca group, that's here YEAR AROUND, with a proper thread in the forums, maybe there will be some more exposure.
Also, if I went to Syracuse, I need the entire day to devote to that. Don't have the the whole day to devote to that, same with some local dubbers who might just want to stop in for half an hour or so.
So... again, while the info is appreciated - all we are trying to do here is have a weekly local Rochester g2g, that is truely local. If you are in Rochester, stop by, if you cant make it, don't - but don't try to tell us that we should go to Syracuse, you can... I won't.
Also, to the few dubbers that hold the RIT meet... while you're not Rochester, feel free to go to your local g2g's and not mess with this one.... too much to ask for?

"Few"? Last time I checked, 18 cars was a bit more than a 'few'. Until this thread, we were the only local gtg that was around, so excuse us for making a few pointers about what's around upstate. The guys from cuse have come up to see us, and if you were serious about getting groups together, you'd try to mix up with people around the area. What's the difference between cruising around Roc and going down to the cuse?
And if you were serious about making a local gtg, you'd invite us to 'mess around' so that when school started back up, we'd all get together. That little rant you posted gives off an extremely close-minded point of view.
And, btw, our gtg's last all day.
Post Title: Re: (R32girl87)
Posted by: FlyBy at 4:04 PM 8-12-2008
The RIT meets were started b/c for years people have tried to get Rochester GTG's going, but there was never enough people for such a large area coming out, and RIT was a good place to meet for most (and also held most of the dubbers in the area during the school year).
So please, don't turn this into a black and white thing and seclude other Rochester area events from this thread, b/c everyone likes to have a good time.
In fact, for example, we have people from Ithaca, Elmira, Watertown, and other cities far away from the Cuse that come out to hang b/c there's not alot around them. So that is why we choose to let your guys know about the other good upstate events, so that everyone gets a chance to get in on the action, Like Kevin, who frequently travels from the ROC to the Cuse, even though there are ocassionally things going on in the ROC.
So please, be open minded and realize that we're not trying to be jackasses. Oh and the Salt City VW show has been growing every year, and has people coming in from all over our areas of the state, so no, it's not a small and locals only event.
Post Title: Re: (FlyBy)
Posted by: nexpert at 8:52 PM 8-12-2008
1. we already said we would be combining once the rit meet started again.
2. we are not looking to travel, this is a pure local meet, that is personal preference and I/we would appreciate if that is respected. If you guys want to post meets in the western NY / upstate area, there is an upstate thread!
3. the rit meet is not going on right now, we are all locals here, not in college, and want a year around meet
So, please, no offense or anything, but, if you're not coming to the meet, have anything to say about this meet, or Rochester meets, please refrain from ranting or complaining in this thread.

And let's work out the timing. Because I think RIT Dub/Audi (where I am from) are starting g2g's next Sunday @ 1PM and after that every Sunday @ 3PM. So maybe we can work out a time and place that we all will like. There's no reason to have 2-3 different spots with 5-10 cars in each. So let's set this up all together and have a great time!

I think he said his name was Karc/Carl(?), in a blue (like Nogaro Blue) MKV R32 - I told him about meets and he said he will stop by
also, I think this Sunday RIT's meet is at 1pm. so I don't know how you guys are feeling about going straight to RIT. Or maybe meeting up at Marketplace and then driving to RIT. or maybe RIT people drive down to Marketplace.
that's why we are all here. I think pretty much everyone is on/from VWVortex, so let's work this out - we have a long weekend ahead of us.
I'd love to do the Friday thing. Maybe I can cut work early, and take some of my own shots!
also I'm going to post this on Rennlist and on Audizine, maybe we'll get a couple Porsche/Audi people in; is anyone a member of a BMW forum or knows someone interested? let's blow this up!

just a thought. and hell all my lowering money went into a new flex pipe for my car and car payments, rent, credit cards and other such things that are a little more important then how big a gap i have between the wheel and my fender. also with the way the roads have been in rochester as of this summer im glad my car isnt so low. i like not smashing the undernearth of my car on rocks, huge speed bumps on 490 and pot holes the size of the grand canyon in the city.

and just like alot of us were saying today. were supposed to support eachother not make fun of and or critisize eachother in a negative none helpful way. we all enjoy our cars and enjoy the path we are taking with them. just cause something isn't done right away does not mean its wrong or not cool enough. ive done alot with my R and i have gotten alot of props for it thus far. Jess's R is mostly stock and i helped her with the flapper today and told her where she can get little things that she liked on my car. did i talk **** cause she has had her car for 4 years and didnt know how to do the flapper? no. i simply showed her and helped her w/ it. but what do i know
. im just a guy who enjoys his car and other cars and doesnt jock people for not having low enough, modded enough or more done up cars then mine or anyone elses.

H2O is only 3 weeks away. We need to make a list of who is definetly going, so we have enough hotel spots, if not - we need to worry about this pretty much NOW.
So keep this in mind when we meet this Sunday.
Anyone and everyone is welcome to stop by. Just don't do anything stupid (atleast while we are on RIT's ground!

Also, we all have "internet friends" who we will probably never meet, but they are cool people just to chat and get ideas on movies, music, life, whatever; well, one of people I'd consider friends over on Audizine just had something horrible happen, so if you guys don't mind - whatever you can contribute. I just happened to run out of $$$ in my account today in the morning (bought stuff, don't ask!)

This is beyond true, have you checked out Dubs in the Buff they are a buffalo based group we are trying to spread to the Rochester region. DubR has oh about 5 active members that are reasonable good people.

I wish I could go to Dubland tonight, but I might be stuck at work untill 8 again, so unless I really haul ass I won't make it there untill 9 anyways
and I had a question, so in my search for a new tire, I remembered that at one point I almost ran a 245/50/16 on my A6 - now the tire fit the wheel perfect, but it didn't clear control arms on the A6
now the 944 has way more fender room; I want to try and measure the wheel, I'm pretty sure that it's atleast a 16x7 - and I want to get rid of that huge tire back there; so according to the tire calculator, to match the front 225/50's I can run 245/45's - and this new tire is going to be a little shorter, and a little wider (and more revs/whatever) - so basically a faster tire
anyone can comment on whether to do this or not?
I really wish I could get those Porsche BBS's or a set of Phone Dials in 15x7F and 15x9R

heh, yeh, with the worn stuff, im pretty sure my motor mounts are in dire need of replacing.
as far as the seat goes, the middle belt is part of the seat, all you have to do is open the little jaws on the outer side of the seat bottoms, pop em out, and then slide the seat off of the pins holding it in the middle, ie pull the seats towards the doors once youve got the clip popped.

and ne have ne expoerince with inner tir rodS???| Quote, originally posted by BMP20thGTI2687 » |
yea i got that but the seat belt in the middle in mounted the thr car at the bottom... so i do believe im going to have to take that mount off to remove the seat and ne have ne expoerince with inner tir rodS??? |
oh yeah, i forgot about that seatbelt thing, i just went and looked at mine. at the end of the seatbelt is a little D-ring type thing hooked over a curled piece of metal mounted to the carbody. in that little curled piece of metal is a sleeve that you have to rotate to a certain position to release the D-ring. its kinda nuisance, you just have to rotate the sleeve and keep wiggling the D-ring and it will pop out. the direction that you're going to want to wiggle the D-ring is towards the back of the car.
as far as the tie rods go, are you sure its not the rod ends at the spindle that are bad? those are easy to spin off of the tie rod. also they're more likely to go bad I think, as the inner tie rod mounts are pretty robust. to fully remove the tierods from the steering rack, it is easier to drop the subframe to get at the rack/rods to put wrenches on the right places. otherwise expect to do some serious contortioning with the wrenches, and you need some serious leverage to take the tierods off.

Friend of mine spotted a group of about 10 troopers lined up and a picture taker (radar/laser guy) on 590N just a few moments ago.
they're pulling a crap load of people over.

...Distillery was fun as a b1tch tho!

I had a ball trying to explain to my mom what the **** I was doing in 19th Ward in the middle of the night and why she should drive out there with a gas can for me
after I got it all sorted out it was like 10:30, so I just went home
when I left work I said to myself that I've been on the same tank for last 3 weeks (barely driving the car), so maybe I should fill up? then I decided I'll do it tomorrow (Saturday) morning instead
I'm a procrastinator, or whatever, some times it bites back!

Colby, sweet pic! Thanks man! you have a link to a photobucket folder or somesuch with more? |
yeah it was. we were down there for 4 days. shes never been to nyc so we spent alot of time going everywhere. zoos, parks, time square, ground zero, bronz, yadda yadda. good time but im not used to that much walking anymore.
and bringing the R down there was a blast for one day. SCARY cause i was scared i was gonna get hit. (almost got hit by a bus) but it was fun taking it down the streets all loud like. haha. i got my resonator delete and crimp pipe replaced so the thing SCREAMS bloody murder between buildings. hahahaha.
all and all a good good time. hope everyone else had a good weekend.

Anyways, Maybe it'd be a cool thing for the group to do? I know it's posted on a subie forum, and there are tons of classic muscle cars show up. It would be neat to have us show up as a group and have a VW row. any thoughts? oh yeah, it's at Myknos greek cafe, which if you leave RIT and go down Brighton-Henrietta Town Line Road, all the way, past MCC etc., the road ends at the the Myknos shopping center. I loved it! I'm registering with PCA and SCCA. I was VERY limited by my tires. But I knew that. This was mostly just a "test run" of whether I can deal with the car on the track w/o power steering. And I can.
My fastest time was an 83sec and off course. 1st run was 88 secs. 1st time I went around VERY slowly. 2nd time I tried to go faster. But at the 1st U-turn I heard my tires rub like crazy! And I decided to go slow again.
3rd time I was at the start line, when an instructor lost control of his STi and went sliding towards spectators. Caused a little "stampede", people got hurt a little. Nothing serious. But event was stopped.
I loved watching Chris and Eva go around track! Miguel had a great run for the 1st time being there!
There was another 944 with more "proper setup" then mine, and he was doing really well himself with room to improve. But he wasn't limited by his tires/setup like I was.
Great day!

| How slow was he? |
very slow. 1st time auto-x'ing. 1st instructor told me that I can definetly go a little faster. but being 1st time on the track, it was allright.
2nd instructor said I should definetly check out the tire problem and find out where I was rubbing. but for how I drove, he said I did really great.
so now over winter I am not sure if I want to try and work suspension a little and make the car ready for auto-x, or if I want to do the bumpers/fenders/hood and paint the car!
1st run - 88secs
2nd run - 83 and offcourse
3rd - never started. event was shut down.

| Smaller spacers in front. Or smaller sidewall tires. Or anti-sway and stress bars. Or all of the above. |
car has F + R sway bars and Weltmeister strut brace - but I can go with bigger sway bars in front and rear; up to 30mm in front and 19mm rear; or weltmeister 28mm front and 22mm rear;
definetly smaller tires;
maybe lowering front with springs and shocks and rear with eccentric bolt - assuming someone local that's done it to 944 can help me out
and might freshen up the brakes - maybe new rotors all around and some Hawk HPS pads
but for what it was, the car can definetly be a lot of fun to toss around, and it will
I am also debating right now if I want to do the cosmetic stuff or not; this whole thing certainly gave me a different perspective of what the car can be!

but definitely slightly stiffer springs and better struts. although, if you'd like to also bring the center of gravity down a touch, most performance spring companies can get you lowering springs with a stiffer spring rate. ie. don't buy off the shelf, call the company and special order.
bigger sways would be good. and definitely good brakes.

| I'm doing a ton of research on my car, and finding some crazy stuff, like lowering the car will actually increase body roll. . |
You have to find the right suspension geometry. Lowering it a little to get the control arms parallel with the ground is good. But that tiny lowering, with much increased spring stiffness and matched struts is optimal.
There is much much more research than I could possibly think of that has been done to get the best handling. It takes some searching.
Post Title:
Posted by: RomanML320 at 7:42 AM 10-8-2008
Right now going from a point where my tires are wrong sized (atleast in the back, apparently 225/50 should STILL work in the front even if car is lowered?) - some of those guys are saying exactly what Kevin is, probably a little old-er worn out suspension.
What I will have to decide on is how far to take the suspension. A coilover kit is going to set me back just over $2k for LEDA suspension, or around $1900 for Ground Control kit with new bushings and their camber plates (if I want them?)
It's kind of weird but I would really like to try the car out with smaller tires and see if my rubbing goes away. At the same time if I start freshing up the suspension, I might as well do it once and get it over with. But then I won't know what kind of difference it made for me.
Post Title: Re: (RomanML320)
Posted by: Kabinotar at 8:34 AM 10-8-2008
Most people doing auto-x aren't going to benefit from going to a full out coilover kit. Especially with the price of them. You can ge the same suspension workings with just a spring and strut combination, but like I said earlier. You'll have to talk to a company and get something custom.
If you want to do a lot of the smaller things. How about buying a bunch all at once, and putting on one or two things first; then see how it does compared to last time. Then put on another upgrade; and wee where you stand.
It seems to me like if you solved the rubbing issues, your times would go down because you wouldn't want to go slower to make it not rub. So, check into that. Whether it be tire size, or spacer size.

yeah that's what I have to figure out now;
the guys over on Rennlist are saying that it might be old suspension, and once freshened up, the rubbing would go away
if you will be there Sunday, if I can find a jack, we can take the wheel off and I'll show you where it rubs
it rubs in the front, when the tire is turned all the way out, or all the way in
I think smaller spacer would bring the wheel more into the wheel well and might cause more problems?

I saw Sam, youn the GTi with RH wheels behind me; after that I just kept on driving to RIT - couldn't see anyone behind me for a while, then saw Sam and you again; then just Sam
so I figured if there is ANYONE behind me they will spot me faster then I'll spot them, so I just kept on going to RIT by myself
made it there, turned around, and went away, and saw the red MKII GTi go towards RIT, so all is cool I think!
btw, my pictures aren't much special, had wrong setting on the camera
I'm getting them up anyways

why not have them a little tucked in so the fender goes over the tire/wheel?
kind of like what Art has on his R?
tuck is much better then having fender sit on top of your tire; btw - this is why bags are better

there is slight burning smell on the outside; car is much noisier and the nose from getting on the throttle takes a little longer to "calm down"
more grunt form the engine;
at first I thought I scrwed up the transmission, or engine, or my timing belt is going; but I drove the car for 5 miles after that. temperatures are great; no leaks
when I went to the rear of the car, I can hear slight hissing noise
there are no cluncks or knocks or anything like that
guys over on rennlist think its probably just exhaust, old and stuff, so that's what I'm going with at the moment

stalled out and won't start - checked - atleast no spark, causes:
reference sensor
speed sensor
cap, rotor, wires, coil
DME relay
sparks are getting fuel, cranks like it starts, doesn't actually start

I forgot, Volkswagen, right
I don't have too many wheel choices as far as 5x130 goes, but there is a really nice set of Keskin wheels I walways wanted (KT1 or KT2), and then ofcourse, Forgeline/Kinesis but they are $$$; actually Fikse FM-10's look great on these cars too, but it's all been done

update on the 944: ordered new distributor cap and new rotor - total: $84 with shipping
OEM Bosch parts
so if they come in Friday, maybe I will take a half-day off and get the 944 runing again so I can go to Dubland
if not then I still might show up either in ML320 or a paint-faded-clear-coat-peeling Dodge Grand Caravan

keep in mind that the OEM Porsche wheels from that era were all aluminum and pretty light compared to some stuff that's out there today
even Replicas of the OEM wheels are 1.5->2 X the weight of original
update:
944 is in the garage right now, dropped the ignition rotor bolt dow the timing belt hole, god damn it
maybe I'll finally get to take out the back seat and all the other crap that's back there

broke the timing belt
pried the cover off to see where the bolt went, and see the belt crammed up on the bottom
so I'm looking at a belt job
in a way it's a good thing, the 944 is going to go under a knife and get a rebuild earlier then I thought; I just wished I could still go to the g2g's and stuff
maybe I can borrom ML320 or even the Caravan
so thx and see you guys around!

Post Title: Re: (thenamescolby)
Posted by: Matillac85 at 10:51 PM 10-21-2008
if there was a swap going on, I'm sure it would be a V8; I'm sure an LS1 or even a 350 would fit; there are a couple with LT1's and Ford V8's (out of Lincoln Continental/Town Car) and stuff too
so yeah
I think for now, going to start taking it apart; order new timing belt kit; change all the bearings, seals, etc; get new waterpump + thermostat; and probably/hopefully some head work done;
obviously there won't be anything done to the body now, and it probably won't get painted, but hopefully I'll be able to freshen up the brakes and suspension; maybe an exhaust too at the end of this whole ordeal
also, a balsy swap would be a 3.6 out of a 911, but I don't know if it would work because the 3.6 is in rear of 911 and 944 has engine int he front, but that would be VERY interesting
and for Turbo: it would be cheaper to supercharge this thing, then to do a turbo, probably not as fast, but more fun for sure "there is something wrong with your engine, it's making the hissing sound! I think it's leaking air!"

shreded timing belt
my uncle did the timing belt and waterpump and aparently one of the rollers was seized up
he "fixed" the transmission for me - but 1st, 2nd, and Reverse went missing - he had it "rebuilt" and gears still disappeared
so new transmission was bought; now started taking apart the front - found shreded t-belt and broken rollers
so Audi's block needs a rebuilt as well
new mechanic said there is a block for $2400, but I think it would be cheaper/better to take this one apart as well and go through it and change things "for the better" over time
the only thing is there are still payments on the Audi for 1 more year, and collision; but I hope my parents stick it out; and I can slowly start rebuilding that one as well
but, Porsche first - will start taking it apart Saturday (hopefully) - looks like it might have a problem with one of the rollers, or maybe waterpump seized up?
so I'm with 2 cars, both fast/handling machines, with 2 broken belts that will probably need head/piston jobs done to them + new full tune up including waterpumps, spark plugs, wires
great!
but Porsche first!
EDIT:
also, a while back, Vastperfomance did a Audi A8/S8 4.2 V8 swap into a 2.7T 6-speed manual A6 - which would be a great swap! car was getting 30mpg because it was manual and was pretty quick. but that V8 is going to set me back alot
so short term project: 944
long term project: A6
then back to: 944

just throwing it out there, since g2g's don't really need to stop

started looking deeper, looks like my timing belt is ok, but my balance shaft belt is ripped
pics:

diagram:

so possibly false alarm on the timing belt/head damage
waiting to see what the guys on Rennlist say; then probably Monday going to order new timing belt kit (might as well get this all done in 1 shot) and tools needed for the belt job

| it seemed wierd to me that u thought ur timimng belt was ripped roamn.... just to let u know u would have a blown engine if ur timing belt snapped ... its an interference engine any slips and ur fukked... cuz my buddy had a 944 same as urs and his timing belt went ...along with the rest of the engine |
now found a few other things, like 1 wire connector was not plugged in, what looks like some kind of fuel related connector
and now all belts are out, and timing belt has some damage on it; not shreded, not ripped, but a few teeth cut off clean, probably from when the other belt broke
blah

| Hey Roman, how's it going, any weekend progress? nice seeing ...everyone... this afternoon. hopefully we have another nice weekend or two. cheers! |
started taking it apart
looks like my Balance Shaft belt snapped and grinded a couple of teeth off the timing belt
put everything at TDC, no weird noises
got all belts off
so going to get new belts, and rollers, and then will try firing it up - if it works, great, if not and there are noises - then a full rebuild will be in order
hope you guys had a great day!

here's another great deal:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors....m245
but it won't be cheap
btw, I was offered a set of 15" Phone Dial wheels for trade for my wheels
but it looks like my wheels might be a "rare super cool expensive edition" - I should really check the stampings on them before I do something threally stupid
and oh, Yogie, I was "forced" to buy my battery from Autozone - it was something like $70 bucks with the old one returned, not bad
forced, because I really want a 11lbs Braille battery (check TireRack for that) and as soon as I can I'll be getting that one

well hopefully someone on Rennlist can tell me what stampings I have to look out for
I think P/O told me they were some kind of OEM Porsche wheel, but, I don't remember/can't tell
and they DO really look like Porsche Cup wheels (which are $$$), but almost all of them are in 17" size - then aparently there is a special set of these that was made in 16" and then possible sizes are 16/6-7 in front and 16/8 in rear
which would work out great, if I knew that's what they are

aparently when I had the new tire put on the 2 wheels that were in a front - I should have kept them wheels there
I think I might have wider wheel with smaller tire in the front
I think I told the shop to take "then rear wheels and tires" and put them in front; and front wheels that needed tires got brand new tires and were put in rear
if so, then this could pretty much explain why I am a dumbass
... more to come
