95 VWs are OBDI.

A standard OBDII code reader is not going to work.

There is supposed to be a shorting tool under the rear seat to plug into the OBD port on the dashboard.

Use it to read the blink codes to figure out what's wrong.

I just got a Bentley MKIII Manual this past Friday from another Voortex Member, and it is the only place that I have ever seen any mention of the tool being under the rear seat, or how to use it. I bought the Owner's Manual Set about a month ago from an eBay Seller, and now I need to go back through the Maintenance Book to see if there is any information about the tool, it's location or how to use it.

The Bentley Manual tells how to use the tool, and how to use a wire to connect two of the terminal in the diagnostic port for a specific amount of time to active the blink fault messages if you don't have the VW handheld Diagnostic Tool.

To display blink codes:

Key on engine off

1) Insert jumper in diagnostic connector for ~2.5sec then remove.
2) After one blink the first digit of the code will blink ~1sec pause, digit 2, etc...
(2-1-1-1 will always be displayed. The ECU only reads the engine speed sensor when the engine is running.)
3)After the first DTC has been displayed, reconnect the jumper for ~2.5sec then remove it. The next code will display.
4) Repeat step 3 untill there are no more codes. (4 long blinks(0-0-0-0))
5) when all codes have been displayed and writen down turn key off.

To erase DTC memory:

1) Connect jumper.
2) Key on but do not start engine.
3) Leave jumper connected for at least 5sec then remove.
4) Reconnect jumper for 2.5sec then remove.
5) The first blink code will display.
6) Repeat step 4 untill all codes have been displayed (0-0-0-0) (All codes must be displayed for memory to erase.)
7) Reconnect jumper for 2.5sec then remove. DTC memory is now erased.
8) Key off.

If you don;t have any luck readig the blink codes, there are some sellers on eBay with VW Specific OBDI Readers. I am thinking about getting one myself. There is a blue colored one for about $40, plus $20 shipping that looks like it will work.

Here is the eBay Auction Number (#330259236133) for a diagnostic handheld tool that the Seller advertises for use with 1990-2007 VWs, Audis, and Skodas.

Is supposed to work with OBDI, OBDII, and CAN-BUS based auto systems.

$39.99, plus $19.99 for shipping. Includes the connectors for Pre-95 2 X 2 diagnostic ports, and the 16-pin connector used by OBD1, OBDII and CAN systems.

If you just want the Blink Tool thing supplied originally by VW that was supposed to be under the rear seat, try a VW Dealer.

Just double checking, so I run a jumpper wire from pin 4- 14 and this will do the same as the special tool from the back seat? Is the upper left the number one pin or is the upper right?
