VWvortex Feature Car: AWE Inspiring Jetta« »

When the 201 hp 24-valve VR6 engine came onto the scene in early 2002, many of the hardcore VR6 enthusiasts waited with baited breath to see how Volkswagen pulled this amazing feat of cramming 12 more valves on top of the 15-degree narrow angle V6. Left without any modifications, the stock 24-Valve engine is a willing performer that picks up where the much loved 12-valve VR6 engine left off. Buyers favoring the VR6 look for its trademark "purr" and incredibly distinct exhaust note. While the VR6 crowd has poured money and resources into trying to maintain their position at the top of the Volkswagen horsepower "food chain", the introduction of the 20-valve 1.8 turbocharged engine in the Volkswagen line has chipped away at this distinction. In the last few years the VR6 enthusiast crowd have been getting their rear ends kicked on the race track by performance “chipped” cars. The 1.8T crowd, however, should not rest on their laurels as the VR6-ers have an answer to their "chipped" rides in the form of Ben Hill’s 2003 V/F Engineering 24-Valve VR6 Volkswagen Jetta. After installation, Ben had the opportunity to run his car on AWE dyno. The results are impressive to say the least: 256 horsepower and 217.5 ft/lbs at the wheels.

Its a shame VW cannot put out stock cars with these numbers as of now. If you want that kind of performance you have to spend at least 4 grand to get there or pay 30 grand plus for a car that still gets its rear end handed to it.

Id like to know if he still has a warranty on the car after those mods, which im sure he doesnt.
You can get a different car with that kind of pwr stock with warranty.

I know it sounds like im bashing this guys car but im not directing it at him, this car rocks now that he dumped all that money into it Kudos to you, you now have a car we all want.

But untill VW can make that kind of HP stock and warrantied at a reasonable price they have lost a long time fan.

The original VR6 prototypes were 24V, with a 2.4l displacement. I guess VW opted for a bigger displacement rather than 12 more valves to cut costs. It's ironic how in 2002 they ended up going back there just to keep the engine more current.

Comments like Whereas a stock car may have had problems reaching gaps in traffic, this car easily zipped through them with little fuss. In fact, driving on the highway at times seemed like a race car video game where the object of the game is make me laugh. I sure don't have problems moving through traffic and I don't have a supercharger. Did the writter even get the chance to drive a stock 24V VR6 or a 1.8T because to me it sounds like as if he was comparing Ben's car against a 2.0.

The car is quicker than before - the writer did not intend to knock the stock VR6. Trust me

i really like this car; very clean and understated with the muscle to more than back it up...

however...

the article never mentions cost when comparing it to the 1.8T, just performance. if you took the money from this supercharger and put it into a 1.8T, you'd have a quicker car with a cheaper initial buy in...heck, if you just bumped the 1.8T up to a KO4 kit with a few other goodies, you'd be competitive for a few grand less...if you've got deep pockets, the 6 may be the way to go, other wise bang for the buck still lies with the 1.8T...

i don't want this to come off as a slight on this car, because i genuinely like it (and drove an MKIII VR6 for 6+ years), it's moreso the article that i disagree with....

and i agree w/the above post, it's a shame VW can put out similar hp #s from the factory like it's competitors can....

WOW nice car, definitly VR6 power!!!

But just kind of bumbed out that after $4000 you only put out 217WTQ, when a chipped 1.8T with stock turbo can put down 269WTQ.

Also, the writer is definitly a 1.8T hater. Why all the hating? I know a lot of 1.8T's that with the same $4000 can put down 300WHP and with at least 270WTQ.

Again why all the hating?

What chip do you have for the 1.8T that is giving you 269WTQ?!

I think you're pushing it even for crank Torque...

The supercharger is great and if I was to get one it would have to be from VF. BUT the price is far too high to make sense to get one especially at the "moderate" gains you get for the amount of money. Either that or reduce the costs for Stage 2 and Stage 3.

Also I have to agree that some bigger brakes would make the car fantastic! Maybe Brembo 4 piston or AP Racing brakes.

Like this

A typical K04 conversion yields around 195-205whp. For example, when RPI did RS4 ko4 conversions, they put down 210whp. I think that while 1.8t still are the best bang for the buck with bolt ons, VR6's are starting to make a comeback.

Yes, VRs are making a comeback as a bang for the buck competitor in the VW scene. One must take into consideration kits from EIP, ATP, and especially (when it comes to dollar per horsepower) Kinetic Motorsports (Stage 1 is, from what I currently gather, in the 2500 range and gets the a VR up to around 250whp on just 7psi... not to mention its got s2 and s3 upgrades for reasonable amounts that will get the VR up to a whopping 400hp). And, when money is of no object, there is no replacement for displacement, EIP's stage 6 kit for the 12 valve promises 800hp (not sure whether that is wheel or crank). My final argument in favor of the VR is that I feel much better about dividing the stress of 400hp 6 ways than I do about dividing it 4 ways. Ultimately, for instant gratification, the 1.8t is still king... but for how long (excluding the 2.0t).

Widening the track in the rear of a front wheel drive car is just going to make it understeer, especially this one seeing as how it is a VR and I did not pick up anywhere that it had a LSD. I think it looks just fine. To a fine dubber cheers.

UPDATE: $3,950 is the cost of the kinetic motorsports stage 3 system for the mk3 obd2 vr6. Throw in an extra $200 bucks for ARP head studs and you've got yourself 350-400whp (a VR on 15psi of boost out of a properly sized turbo makes about 350whp as long as everything is tuned properly. From kinetic you could count on everything to be in place.) for under $4200 (assuming that you install it yourself). http://www.kineticmotorsport.com (turbo kit) http://www.spturbo.com (arp head studs)

At the time of the writing Ben didn't have a LSD on the car which would have helped some of the traction issues that we had. Don't know if he has added one since then or not as it's been awhile.

Personally I'm glad to see the VR's making a comeback of sorts in terms of tuners focusing on them.

24v N/A with GIAC/ evoms cai/ 2.5 cat back yields 191whp and crazy top end(for the amount of power) and is an absolute pleasure to drive vs. the 1.8t. i personaly never understood the 1.8t = best bang for the $ deal when its only got maybe 10whp on the 24v for the same $ invested
