Guest Opinion: A View From The Top« »

Leaving his position as the first Editor of Performance VW, Greg Emmerson reflects on his time at the top.

Walking away from Performance VW after seven and a half years as Editor has been one of the hardest things I've ever done. It's been like giving a child up for adoption, when you don't know if the smiling guardians you're handing it over to will really love it the way you did.

Of course, I'm exaggerating slightly, but I really saw the mag as my baby. After all, I gave birth to it, in a manner of speaking. Admittedly without the messy placenta or anything, but it was a difficult pregnancy. It was mid-1996. I was fresh from a four-year stint on Max Power and concerned about the state of existing VW magazines. I felt they were pretty lame and that anybody could do better. Even me!

awesome work...need a better subscription plan like almost EVERY OTHER MAGAZINE out there who give you a deal for signing up for a year or more (20% off cover price or whatever). as it is, I just go to Barnes and Noble bookstores and read the new PVW's and if I REALLY like it drop the $8 or whatever it is and pick it up. I know this isn't the best way to support an awesome magazine...but sorry, there's no incentive the way I see it.

PVW always appealed to me when I owned A2 VWs. I would pick it up at B&N without looking at the cover. Drop $8 US and quickly leave the store
I knew this mag would deliver. I knew if I started to flip thru the pages I would only be teased and unable to put it down.
I would see cars with flushed door handles & debaged this and that, worked suspension and the like........only to read the article and find out the owner payed someone to flush and fill everything in sight and they got it done in time for a big show
maybe I'm picky

I continued on as a subscriber thru a Canadian based importer

But after repeated articles with little insight to anything original writing wise
Maybe a slight bit of info here and there
I began to flip thru the mag right off the shelf and did not intend to re-subscribe

now I don't even purchase it
I started to cringe as PVW featured cars that were really "over the top"
I guess I'm not in PVW's target age group

I respect PVW in its regard to run a business as best suited

After a while it was enough and the magic wore off really slowly
It seemed PVW took on a horrible formula so prevalent in US based EURO or various import magazines

Don't get me wrong your paper and photography & overall theme is awesome
but if your going to call yourself PerformanceVW please do so accordingly

keep it VW
keep it performance

you yourself could and should start a new magazine

call it "VWgroupH20"

carry on
on def ears

Great big pages, great big pictures, and witty, humurous writing. Greg E. even would reply to my emails..
Great JOB, GREG!!!
I spent the $95/year on subscriptions for many years to have it delivered to my door. It was always exciting when it would arrive in the mailbox and it still inspires me . It's been worth it. But now I am a bit older and have seen enough. I alwyas requested features on competition VWs, but no luck.

I really look forward to my trip to b&n each month to pic up the new pvw mag. It really comes with new and interesting cars every month.

It really is wierd though how a mag started on daily drivers and such changes into a more high profile car mag throughout the course of the life of the mag. Once cars that we underappreciated grabbed feature spots, and now that the mag is one of the best, everyone is banging down your door to get in. Some of the top show cars around the world have graced your pages, and the photography has continued to be top notch. It's just that as a magazine evolves you need to feature the best that you can, and to pvw for doing that. You guys have brought about a change in the vw tuning arena, throughout the years, and really that says a lot, that one mag from England can change the scene here in the states.

I don't frown on PVW for changing, I think it is a logical step, and it is hard to stop, espcially since you do like to take pictures of every nice VW that you can find, but the numbers of VW owners tuning thier cars has increased, and therefore the chioce of editors and features has decreased, I only wish that PVW had about 200 pages of articles, that way we can see more of what is going on around the world

i still think theres alot of "i dont have anything else but my dub" cars in PVW. i actualy think its a good mix, see whats going on in the show scene and also others like us. but its true that if you want to see true innovation you gotta pick up VW SCENE...but pvw still has that nice homely feel to it that ive recognized for about 5 years

Greg,

PVW is great magazine. It's one of the many reasons why I enjoy building my VWs. The very first issue that I got was at steet corner newstand in LA. And in the corner of the mag was this bright yellow GTi with some crazy wide Shmidt wheels. It was not a cover, but a great feature, non the less.

It's was the yellow Siedl Tuning GTi with blackout B pillars, color match Shmidt wheels and other goodies. That issue back in '99, I still hold dear to me. (And even joined me in the bathroom ) Even Matt from TZ, even before TZ would comeover and we would just browse through my collection of PVWs and we would get these crazy ideas for our cars from your magazines.

I am pretty sure you will be missed at PVW, but Elliot seems to got it all figured out. I know your next project (aka bastard child ) will be equally as good or even better.

I wish you the best of luck with your future and your family.

You'll be missed Greg 'ol boy. As a long time reader (I have every issue and a couple of the UK-only subscription tee shirts - no easy feat for a US-based buyer) you've definately selected cars to feature that both provoke as well as inspire. Hopefully Elliott will keep things in check. PVW is still my favorite English speaking VW magazine (even though you guys bungled my feature back in 2000).

Good luck to ya Greg.

Gee, VAG Parts bin, would that be the wrong picture in regards to your interior? The one where your car magically went from Stay-Puft Marshmallow Golf to Tiptronic Passat? I still have that issue As well as most from 97 to now...PVW has really expanded using cars from the US as well as from the Continent...as opposed to the first year or so, when there were more British 17in wheeled, big bumpered A2 Golfs than you could shake a stick at...Good Luck Greg, wherever you land...Hope Elliot doesn't screw it up too much in your absence...

I remember picking up my first pvw and just was in such a great mood to work hard on my dub. now a days the scene has changed
as has the magazine to keep up which i admire. the only thing i regret
is that i could not roll with the times and build these amazing euro vdubs but with my budget sorry to say i cannot compete that is not
saying i give up... knowing that someday maybe i strike a better
salary or so forth but non the less to build my car to my taste.
yes i thought by me building a mark2 w/ shaved this and g60 arch that and 17" wheels i to could feel the part and get featured.
i never got any feature and u know what my feature is in my dedication to strive to keep my dub new and inovative. after owning
my mark2 11yrs and three different looks and colors no i must say
i'm finally some what satisfied w/ the turn out and look from the paint to the stance to the wheels, just needs some more power now!!!
well thats my rant 4 the day and thank u pvw 4 outmost inspiration!!
