some time after the 356 was well underway, Porsche figured that it needed a slightly larger car for us slightly larger people. a complaint kept on coming back... the 356 wasn't big enough to fit golf clubs! something had to be done!!!

so work began on the 695. this car had a wheelbase 4 inches longer than the 356 in order to accomodate the stretched luggage area. the problem is that now that the 356 was longer, it also looked sort of funny. does it remind you of an Alfa Romeo? it should because Butzi Porsche liked the smooth and flowing lines of the Alfas and wanted to emulate this.

after making this prototype, Butzi further refined the car and changed the rear windows a bit. this continued the Porsche form of a silhouette which consisted of "three intersecting arcs". this form started with the 356 and continued with EVERY model up to the current day.

after enough Porsche heads butted together, it became obvious that this big new golf bag hauling vehicle would need something larger than a 4 cylinder and cheaper than the Furhmann 4-cam. the 695 was further refined into the 901. the "9" symbolized a bold new direction for the company. Peugeot of course said that any 3-digit designation with a "0" in the middle was their property, so Porsche changed the "0" to a "1" and the 911 was born.

i dunno though, would you rather have a 695?

take a piece of paper and a pen. draw three sweeping arcs. one is the hood, one is the windshield, and one is an arc from the windshield top to the rear window. you've just drawn the silhouette for every Porsche ever made. doesn't look like the convertibles or roadsters? put the tops up on them

The choice if I understood the post correctly was related to nomenclature 695 or 911.

(since we're on rare porsches)
