Holy schtick! That thing is so f'ing hot!If you wouldn't hit that, then you might want to re-consider why you're on a car fan board. The Colt Turbo (any generation) is one of the most fun cars built in the last twenty years, and one of the only cars that can give the original GTIs a run in the "smiles per mile" category.

Yep. We got the second and third generation cars as both a Colt and Mirage Turbo, but the first gens were only sold as Dodges and Plymouths. These cars are superlight and incredibly nimble, like high-powered skatboards. One of the great small cars, along with the A1/A2 GTis, the Mini and the Nissan Sentra SE-R.

Thank you! Someone who "gets it." Let's review, shall we: 1865 lbs. 115 hp. 8-speed manual transmission. I'm sorry--what part of that equation doesn't equal "Big-Ass Fun?"

oh hell yeah I'd pimp that. A guy on another board I frequent has a colt rally car running ~16 psi boost, cant remember. looks like a sick car. that transmission sounds wierd though, I wonder how user friendly it is. obviously it never really caught on.

I remember reading about them when Motortrend tested a Colt Turbo back in 1984. Basically it was a 4 speed main/2 speed auxilliary box. Dodge/Plymouth offered it in other cars, including the Colt Vista wagon. I think the dual range was underdrive/overdrive. Technically it was an 8 speed transmission and you could split each gear and drive it as such but it required both hands or quick action with one hand during clutching to shift both between gearshifts in the main box. Or you could just leave it in underdrive until you hit 4th gear then shift between ud/od in 4th gear. Or just leave it in od. But due to the complicated nature of the twin stick transmission, it lost favor and Mitsubishi dropped it in favor of a conventional 5 speed manual transmission around 1987.

I have never seen one of those before but I have a feeling that would be a TON of fun, especially when its got some work done to it... how easy/hard is it to work on or mod one of those?

ok, apparently i'm missing something here. its a 21 year old dodge colt with a "custom" widebody kit and an accord front bumper? from the outside the car looks like a botched abortion. it's only 1900lbs with a totally gutted interior, but it's still only 115hp (i'm assuming at the wheels) which would make it fun enough to drive around and beat on... i guess. but whats with all the fapping? if this was a 94 civic hatch with a "custom widebody kit", an accord bumper grafted on to the front, painted canary yellow, gutted to bare metal putting and down 115hp everyone here would be screaming rice. what am i missing here? (not trying to insult anyone for once, i'm actually curious)

The kit's not perfect, I'll give you that. But it can easily be fixed and finished for a very nice custom look | Quote, originally posted by OrangeTurbo_01 » | | it's only 1900lbs with a totally gutted interior, but it's still only 115hp (i'm assuming at the wheels) which would make it fun enough to drive around and beat on... |
No, it's 1865 lbs stock. If the interior was gutted, this car would probably weigh closer to 1600 lbs. Plus, you're forgetting the size. This car is probably only about 145" in length, total--that's MINI Cooper territory. It's not RWD, BTW, but when you're talking about a car THIS small, it's irrelevant. It's no wonder that a third-generation, 1989 Colt Turbo topped out a C&D comparo of 13 small sportsters, including the GTI 16V and the CRX and Civic Si.

Wow.TWIN STICK! That's all I gotta say. Nothing like being in 3rd gear...and thinking...I'd like to be in 3rd and 1/2 gear... Pull the lever from "L" to "H" and BAM! you got it And let me tell you--these cars were terrors in their day. Boost lag and torque steer like WHOA. There were many pictures in various car mags showing the little Colt Turbo doing a massive smoke show. With the 1.8L (up from 1.5L) motor (they also made a Cordia/Tredia turbo, IIRC, hence the 1.8L motor), that thing would have very good power. $2004 GRC contender, anyone?
