Re: Does your Remote only work close to the car? (xkickflip) »« »

Ok here is the short write up with basic pictures.

Start off by removing the side cover over the fuse panel on the side of the dash. Then remove the 3 T20 torx screws under the dash for under-dash shelf. Now you can pull the left section of the dash panel that covers under the colume off. That will expose another T20 torx screw that holds the right side section to the knee bar, remove the screw and pull towards you to remove the panel. Now there are 2 T25 screws and 4 T20 screws that hold the black metal knee bar to the dash. remove all 6 screws and remove the knee bar. Now you can see the fuse panel and relay carrier clearly.

The BLACK connector that is circled above is the the connector that houses the antenna wire. unplug in and pull it down the best you can to get to the wire.

Now you have to push the purple terminal lock to the side in order to remove the old antenna wire terminal. you will need a special wire removal tool. *(as i said before it will be difficult for some of you to find one, so if you want to skip removing the entire wire and want to TRY and cut the antenna wire and splice new wire to the old terminal still in the connector then go for it!)*

Once the wire is out you can install your new wire with terminal into the same slot as the old wire. You can get the terminal from your local dealer. its the same female terminal that used for the MAF sensor harness. That should help them look up the part.
Run your new wire as you'd like along the door sill or under the dash to the passenger side, its your choice.

The final install.
I may have missed something, so ask away if your unsure. Ill do my best to reply in a timely manner.

I'm pretty sure my car was the model for the DIY. Props to 03Jetta1.8T for the writeup...maybe they should put it on the DIY post

I just went downstairs to my underground garage to measure. Well, I park way down at one end, and I walked all the way to the other end and it still worked easily (without raising my hand past waist level, or using the chin trick) I would've kept going, but I ran out of room. I'd say this was well over 250ft with a remote that has is over two years old and never had the batteries changed. This should definately put an end to the skeptics!!

Sorry about the waterspots, I guess I need to clean my camera.

I suppose now I have to use a bigger garage or parking lot in order to find out the actual range limit.

Very cool bro. Glad your happy. And yes your car was the donor for the pics... i would have taken more pictures but my batteries were on the last tick mark and i wasnt gonna run out of juice while doing this and have to do it AGAIN on a diff car just for a write-up.
Thanks again for the gift!

But I actually stood up in my apartment just now I put the freakin key under my chin & it worked! After reading his post I thought somewhere at the bottom it would say "YOU'RE ALL DUMB FOR TRYING THING!!" But it actually worked!! Crazy

Ghetto mods? I didnt think this "mod" was ghetto at all, in fact i thought this was very professional and took time and expertise to perform this succesful repair. But i guess everyone has thier own opinions.
No i cant quote you on any prices since it varies per state, etc.
And no I cant quote you on the price of the tool i made. The bits are a VW specific part for the wire terminal tool that VW supplies the dealers. The handle is a piece of metal i cut and ground down to attatch the bits to.

The chin thing really does work - doesn't cost any time or money either. It's a great way to start an argument with your friends as well. It works better on some cars than others.

i hold my remote to my chin too all the time and i didnt believe it when someone told me, but it works. Has something to do with your skull I think cuz holding it above your head still doesnt work as well. Anyway, is there a reason that there are short ranges for remotes? Like what are the chances of someone else unlocking your car? I dont know how they code the keys, but I remember one guy tellin a story about his friends key opening his car.

Great write up, thanks for the info. One quick question.

The wire needed with the VW connector on it is that the same size as we would use to connect to the euro switch to do the rear fog mod?

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't? I've got more to worry about in life than how far my remote transmits. Its still annoying though.

FYI - an antennae is a "tuned" device, and as such is usually match.

What this means, is that the transmitter (remote) has a matched RF output to the reciever antennae (convienience module pink wire). By modifying the length of the antennae, you have effectively "un-matched" the transmitter to the reciever, and you may have "just gotten lucky" to get a length of wire to a close enough wavelength to recieve the transmitter signal in a usefull way.

My suggestion is NOT to modify this part of the car, as there are many factors as to why YOU do not have the range you desire. You may have a low transmitter battery, you may have an issue within the factory wiring harness, or even atmospheric conditions can affect the RF transmissions.....

Good luck though with yours....

I dont think it really matters as it is only a receiver, it doesnt have to transmit so .....

I dunno...but after he did it to my car, I can use the remote from FAR away. On a hot day, it's nice to be able to roll down all your windows from across the parking lot so it's not 300deg when you get in

I think it must be like 03's and up! If you onlock your car and do not open any doors or trunk it will lock itself after some short time!

With our 4.5 Jetta GL, it works (with a clear path) for about 100ft. I am assuming that with more interferance, from objects and signals, the range decreases. But i was very pleased with it being so far and still working I think it has to do with the newer Key/remote. I know they changed them in 2004 ( i think ) , maybe 2003. Anyways.. i ramble... good work on the remote.

Nope 03's and 04's are the same! I have 03 Jetta and my sister has 04.5 Jetta. Hers has such shorter range than mine, dunno why its weird!

Sent you a PM.

Yes its the same size terminal as the terminals at the headlight switch, or at the MAF sensor connector.
