some in progress pics of my install« »

started out with a box.

used the existing hatch carpet to cut out the pattern for the bottom of the false floor.

cutting the base to attatch the box in the 1st pic. this is going to be seated so that the small box is inside the spare. the tools and jack will be relocated after and the spare is easily accessible and removable.

attached

from the top-side

wide shot

test fitting and getting some idea on placement. i left out the pics making the middle part of the floor cuz my camera died. basically it's a rectangular frame about 3" high. the top piece was then cut and the hole was made so the speaker is situated directly over the center of hte spare tire.

cover pannel in place. still gotta think about some cooling vents or fans.

bottom part (the big piece in the previous pic was cut in half) painted and carpetted. this part can be easily lifted up and out if the spare needs to be accessed.

in place

cover piece carpetted and in place

OEM vs Aftermarket carpet. almost a perfect match.

pic with the seats up

I just have to finish cutting out the cover piece for the rear amp rack and worry about cleaning up the wiring. if i have to remove the spare, i can easily pull the fuse out of the dist. block and undo the RCA, power, and remote wires and lift out the whole piece.

If the weather cooperates I should be able to finish this on saturday

if you have any questions or comments let me know. I have been wanting to do this for SO long - i got sick of having a massive box in the back and having my amps mounted to the back seat for everyone to see when i popped the hatch. at least this way i have a lot of trunk space back even tho the floor has been lifted and a little bit more security because the casual passerby won't see anything fancy in there.

I got it from ADD Electronics. It's a local shop. Here's their web site: http://www.add-electronics.com/

in their online catalog it's called grey carpet. $9 CAD/yard

very nice install! i have some questions though..

first of all how does the bottom piece support itself? or does it just get placed on the floorboard? as in how does it balance and how do u know it goes on flat?

also how do u make the cover piece for the JBL amp stay in place?

last of all what material did u use for the install?

right now it's kind of wedged between the inner wheel wells. the small extension of the speaker box area rests on on the spare tire. i got a level on there to make sure that it was flat. I was plannong on getting some big velcro strips to make sure that the piece stays put, but now that it's fitted and in place, i don't see a need for it..

The cover piece for the JBL amp rests in place by itself now, but i will be putting some velcro spots on it.

materials: MDF, no more nails adhesive, wood screws, and black silicone

 Re: (zilla) »« »

I finished up the install this weekend. here are the pics:

all pannels in place

from the side:

access to the sub amp is gained from removing the cover pannel:

Lifting up the back pannel gives access to the wiring and the components amp. I still have to clean up the wiring. The fans are controlled by a relay that's activated by the remote turn on signal from the head unit. I had to make my own mounting brackets because the fans were ~ 1" thick and the MDF was 5/8"

once those pannels are removed, i can lift up the sub box and gain access to the spare:

I'm loving the fact that i don't have to deal with a sub box and amps that are visible to anyone who happens to walk by when i pop the hatch. Also the fact that I don't have to worry about any cargo catching on the wires is a definate plus.

I wish that i would have done this in the first place

Very nice. What head unit & speakers are you running?

Thanks for the compliments.

the HU is a Clarion Pro Audio DXZ 715

Components are MB Quart DSD 216 i think.

heh.. yah i used vantech stealths. there was a computer store in town that carries ARXtech fans and arx tech makes 5/8" thick fans, but it's not normal stock. i called the distributor and they said that they'd have to order a minimum lot of 100 from china and they wouldn't sell them directly to me - they only sold to retail stores.

side note, the markup on case fans is INSANE.

Two questions, and a comment.....

First the comment, I think it would have looked better if you'd flushed the sub with the floor.....Other than that (ok TWO comments)

Now the questions.....

1. How does it sound?
2. Is there a reason you didn't flush the sub? SQ, or otherwise?
3. How much did it cost to build?

sounds good. it's difficult to compare tho because the old box was firing backwards and this one is firing upwards.

space. i wanted to mount the sub flush, but with the measurements I made it was going to be a big PITA.

3. How much did it cost to build?

everything all told was probably under 75 bucks CAD. your milage may vary

That looks amazing! do you have any pics of how your head unit looks in the dash?

i bought my gti 3 weeks ago with the intent of keeping the monsoon system no question.... but now the question is WHICH aftermarket head unit will look the best in there... i bought a phatbox, but it sounds crappier, and on the whole i would just be much happier with aftermarket stuff.

my concerns are:

how close can i get the blue lights to match from the headunit to the dash lights. (i am considering clarion, but prefer alpine's interface..)

but more importantly, how do aftermarket head units look in that dash? i have always had aftermarket, some look good, most look like sh*t.

do you use the factory trim ring on this dash? or does it not fit, like most nissans and toyotas?
