My New Mod. Version 2.0 ( Carputer Install )« »

This is my third carputer. You may remember my first one carputer in my Jetta but I've redesiged and upgraded. My LCD is now a 7" Xenarc "widescreen" display w/ Touch Screen. It's fully functional but I'll always be working on it.

Quick specs:

Fully Upgradable mini desktop PC
DC Power Supply with Auto-On/Off w/delays
7" LCD Touch Screen
In-Dash Slot-Load Slimline DVD/CDR Drive
Globe Box 4 Port USB 2.0 Power Hub
DVD Drive (in trunk)
Orinoco Gold WiFi card with external 7.5dB Omni Antenna
Gryration RF mini keyboard + mouse.
Delorme Earthmate GPS

I'll have more pictures up on my website later.
(more info & pictures throughout the thread)

sweeeeeeeeet.... the integration between the unit and the center console is seamless. how well does the material used around the screen/ac controls match the rest of the dash? very nice job.

The material is Bondo. That paint is just black primer. I may redo it sometime soon because the opening isn't completely to my liking.

What kind of video card will it carry??
I'm just using onboard (motherboard) Intel video.

How much ram???
256 MB

How big is the hard drive??
30GB - For now. Everything is EASILY upgradable.

Where would the DVD player be at?? If not i can always move movie files to the car comp right??
There's a DVD/CD-R combo drive in the dash under the display.
There is also a DVD ROM in the trunk.

Whats the speed of the carcomputer??
600Mhz. The computer was free (relative give-away). There is no need for over 300Mhz with a good motherboard for MP3, DVDs, Video (DivX), Intenet, and GPS.

USB ports on the front of the dash would be awesome too...
The are 4 USB 2.0 ports in the glovebox.

LoL...I'm a self admitted gadget geek. This is true. No pocket protectors though. I don't spend much time in my car at all. But it was a fun project I was able to do. Some people do preformance mods, some do body mods. This is just my type of mod.

Having 1000's of MP3s to listen to is nice! GPS comes in handy when I'm not in a familiar area. Passengers appreciate being able to use it as well (Internet access, Videos, DVDs, etc...) Some future plans are to have the PC interface with the car for real-time stats and diagnostics.

ahhhh the miracles of bondo..... so much fun

i'm guessing you just sorta ripped out your h/u, masked up the rest of the dash and went at it... looks nice, from the pics it looks like you got a really nice finish on it, which is what i was really concerned about when i almost did this a couple months ago, but i didn't have the balls and just did about everything else to my stereo, congrats!

btw any reason you chose that screen? from what i've seen hte 'liliput' or w/e screen seems to be the weapon of choice for most carputer people

Thanks. Yes, I ripped out my headunit. Along with the little "cubby hole" thing underneath it and the cup holders. I also ripped out the monsoon system "black box" (it's just a crossover) and replaced it with a aftermaket amps and speakers. This dash finish matchs pretty damn good. I'm going to take it out sometime and smooth out some of rough edges.

The display I'm using the basically a higher quality Lilliput. It's not made out of refurbished parts and has more inputs.

that is one of the coolest things i have ever seen! you have your motherboard, and processor all in the trucnk, or behind the dash? sorry if i didn't read that already. the dash is just the screen custom fabrication work with all the wires running to it?? and what are you using for the net? satellite?

The PC is in the trunk. There isn't much room behind the dash. If I had the money I would have bought a Mirco-ITX mobo and mounted it all in the glovebox. Maybe someday. The computer was free so I worked with what a I had.

The LCDs original front panel was molded into the factory dash. Bondo was used to fill-in the seams and blend it all in and look smooth.

For internet I have a external antenna to receive 802.11 signals. In the city I can usually always pick one up. The networks are usually wide open so I can just hop on the net. When a 802.11 signal isn't near I plug in the cellphone into the USB hub in the glove box and use Sprints unlimited highspeed access.

I guess so. I took apart most of the lower interior panels to hide all the various cables and wire. Is that what you mean?
