She didn't come easy (easier than the other Rabbit ), but she has settled in. Say goodbye! Everytime I look inside I can't beleive how good of shape the interior is in for being a 25 year old car The real fun starts this weekend.

I have a set of MKII Recaro Trophies that I was planning on putting in the car, but they aren't in as good a shape as the current seats and they are obviously not the same color scheme. I really don't want to spend the bucks to redo the entire interior either...WHo knows, maybe I will just stay with what's there.

Here's the thing. Have you ever sat in Trophies? They are bolstered soooo nicely.

I could care less if they had "Chicken ****" stiched into the seats, I've have them and they are great seats. Hell, I would rather recover them in the present interior pattern, but I doubt I am going to find it anywhere. GTI interior ehh? This car is becoming more and more interesting....

One way to lose some weight in a convertible | « » 5:26 PM 10-8-2004 | |
|
Got home from work today and two and a half hours later I had a lot more breathing room. Ran into a little trouble with one of the inner CV bolts, but a little inspriration and a circular saw with a cutoff blade took care of it pretty easily. I need to get the Brakes (MC, Booster, Pedal cluster), steering, and wiring sorted out before the space gets filled back up, but I am very pleased at the pace things are progressing. (BTW: If any need anything from an '80 1.6 5-speed let me know.)

Looks like you started work immediately! Let us know if you are stuck anywhere. PS, now that the engine is out, its a good chance to clean and paint the engine bay.

Maybe it looks worse than it is in the pictures, but for a 25 year old NorthEast car that has never been in the hands of someone who cared for it, I think it is in pretty good shape. It is a little soft on the driver side inner fender between the raintray and the firewall, but I am sure that can be taken care of. You can also stand on the floor pan underneath the driver seat without fear of falling through the floor (which you can not do on my other Rabbit, which is 3 years younger), so I am pretty pleased. I do have one clarification. I have been told that the post 86 A1 (Scirocco, Cabriolet) use brake boosters that will bolt right up to a 22mm (A2) master cylinder. If that is the case I am looking for such a Booster and Pedal cluster.

Looks a little better now eh? I was literally removing layers of dirt with a putty knife.
I did expose some nastiness around the strut towers and on the inner fenders up in the raintray. Is this pretty common with the additonal flex in these cars (and more importantly how much of a pain is it to deal with?). Also, anyone know what the engine bay is painted with ( I am assuming it is not normal body color) thanks

The engine house was painted with Ni/Cel enamel right along with the body as it came down the line. Nothing special.

Progress has been slow as I am waiting on a brake booster before I put the new engine in. I've been keeping myself busy by dealing with some things on the engine and cleaning it!There sure is a hell of alot more wiring than a CIS engine

I'd love to help you out but I've never done it on an 8v (the engine pictured is a 16v). It is most likely the same process, head on over to the 8v forum and I am sure they can point you in the right direction.
