 Project Scirocco Part 5:« »

If there is one bit of advice that I could impart to anyone who is considering a project involving a full restoration and modification of a 20-plus year old car, it would be that such a project requires a ton of planning, preparation, and patience. Being realistic with your budget, your resources and your time constraints will save you many headaches as you begin your project. Also, being able to alter your path to suit your timeframe and budget is just as important - I have looked at my car as a constantly evolving project that has gone far longer in terms of time and money than I originally intended. However, the end result has been great so far.

VERY cool car!

Just one comment, that roll bar has a nice harness bar, the harnesses should go over that bar.

I know those wheels are Schmidts, but I have a few questions as I think those wouod look great in My Rabbit GTI Project.

What size are they?
Where can I get some?
What size are the tires?

I appreciate any information.

Thanks

Thanks guys! This update has been long overdue and with my various changes of life in the past two years (getting engaged and moving all the way across the country) things have been a bit slow to progress. That will change and you will see the final updates relatively quickly.

Those are a set of Schmidt MX line wheels which were recently discontinued. I purchased them through NGP back in 2001. They are 15x8" with a 25mm offset with a set of 195/50VR15 Pirelli P700.

There are similar wheels offered through the Tuner Shop in California but they aren't quite the same... but yet pretty close:

I hope that helps!

Love the car

I've got a question about the roll bar, the article says its a five point bar, but I only see 4 points, is the fifth one that diagonal bar that falls from the driver to passenger side, or am I missing something?

Excellent, Excellent.

I can see you went through some of the tougher details to do a really thorough job.

Those Mk1 Siroccos are where I got my start in VW. We used to buy them in Brandywine, Md and bring them back to N.C. and rebuild them. I still think even today that is one of VW most beautiful cars, particularly when they have the right paint scheme/colors. That car is painted much like an '81 "S" version that I remember having a plaid or striped bucket seats. I probably did 8-10 of those cars. The last was an '81 that was that dark forest green color with the nice tan interior. Man I wished had kept that car.

Anyway,
Good job

The only thing sexier than that car is it's owner! We'll always have that night in the hotel in Georgetown... no one can take that away from us!!!
Seriously, though, nice car. Paul has put an enormous amount of work in that thing. He's done a great job... kudos my boy!

Ummmm yeah.... who are you again???

For both ValveFloat and PhOO your comments are duly noted; I have had a couple of conversations with people who use these sorts of harnesses in competition in both NASA and the SCCA and their comments were that the positioning was "borderline" and should be safe but that I should consider moving them and anchoring them in another part of the cabin. I originally purchased them when the car was destined to be a dedicated track car but since then the cars' purpose has moved to being more of a spirited street car and the harnesses are probably not appropriate or convenient.

I am contemplating moving back to a three-point belt setup and also to a more tradtional Mk1 Scirocco seat setup just because as good as the Corbeau seats are they do sit quite a bit higher than the factory seats. I am 5'10" tall and despite the lower seat tracks designed for the Scirocco my head is still very close to the headliner.

When all is said and done nothing works like a Mk1 seat in a Mk1....

I'm sorry to tell you this.

I really really really really really really really like this rocco! It is possibly the hottest VW I have layed my eyes on. I love my corrado and all, and if she knew I wrote this the years of trouble free running would come to an end real soon, but that looks nicer than pretty much any corrado I have ever seen. Everything is clean, chunky in the right areas, and just plain european hottness. I can't really come up with the proper adjectives to describe how spot on and absolutely perfect this car is. Trust me, the money, sweat, tears, blood, and time you have invested in the car was absolutely worth it, 10 times over!

I'm 6'2", and I had to modify the crap out of a seat bracket to make it work on my Scirocco. I ended up having to weld the bracket to the seat rails. My Corbeau is pretty much on the floorpan as a result. My head just clears the headliner when I have a helmet on. My legs don't hit my Momo steering wheel anymore either.

The top section of the belt has to be at a >90° angle with the spine. Otherwise it's gonna push down on your shoulders, in case of an accident, and cause spinal injury.
It's best to go back to the original ones. Won't look as good, but it's better than a wheelchair.

She a beauty. How long till it starts itching again, and you wake up one morning with another stripped chassis on blocks?

Thank you for the input! I am on the prowl for a nice set of OEM seatbelts for the car as we speak.....

As for doing a full restoration to a car again well... not so sure if I am up for it anytime soon. This car (along with all the other various automotive projects that I have been involved with in the past four years) have kept me very busy and now I am setting my sights on something a bit different for a project.

Awww... thanks for the compliment! As a fellow Corrado owner I appreciate your kindness.

The funny thing is that literally nobody pays any attention to this car when I am driving it out in the real world. I have had the distinct pleasure of driving it full-time back and forth to work nearly 70 miles a day for the past month during rush hour and literally nobody gives it a second glance.... Here in the land of conspicuous consumption known as Scottsdale, Arizona if your car doesn't have 26" chrome wheels with spinners in the center nobody really looks at you twice.

I suppose that could be construed as a letdown but on the other hand I built the car to make me happy, not to garner attention from anyone else.. for what that is worth.

Paul you mentioned in your article that you used a Zender front spoiler but the one in the pic's is a Kamei right?
Just a typo or did you ditch the Zender in favor of the deeper Kamei?

I have been thinking about a roll bar for sometime now for "Cosmos" but have gone back an forth on whether to have a custom one welded in or to instal a bolt in Autopower one.

The Kirker one you have now, is it a weld in or a bolt in?
Is it SCCA legal in any of the classes?

Also, why didn't you chose a pair of harnesses that mount to the roll bar instead of bolting to the rear seat belt locations. This is part of the reason I want to install a roll bar. I figure with a good roll bar you get the crash protection, chassis rigidity, and the ability to both bolt your seat to it and attach your harnesses to it.
Again, just curious why you went one way or the other.

I still consider your Scirocco like my twin...just with a LOT more work into it and a LOT cleaner. You and I seem to have a very similar view of what the Scirocco should be...you've truly executed that in an amazing way.

Your car just replaced my car as my new wallpaper

Paul,
Very nice car. You have really put a lot of effort into it. I am at a crossroads with my 80 Scirocco S, which I have owned since 1982. It needs the restoration, but would take the money and time that I don't feel I have at present.
