VWvortex: Project Rallye VRT Part V | « » 6:14 PM 10-15-2004 | |

I hope you’re ready for a really sad story… However, before you reach for that box of Kleenex, rest assured that there is a happy ending. This installment of the Rally VRT project is financially and emotionally painful for me, but will hopefully be a major learning experience for everyone who follows this series. It involves impatience, excitement, and reckless abandon. I have witnessed these attributes destroy many projects before they even have a chance to develop, and now, I have fallen victim to them as well... Full Story...

Very impressive car. Sorry to hear about the troubles. I know how VRT's can be. Fun when they run, but a lot of trouble when they don't.

That really sucks. blowing up Rallyes isnt fun. I know.8 bent valves a week after buying mine. Less than a week later it had a new drivetrain. I say breaking is just a good excuse to make it stronger. Which i see you think the same way. is the $50 gift certificate i won for the A/b valid for a 1 hour cruise behind the wheel of that thing? I'll leave mine as collateral Cant wait to see what you guys do next!

This is quite a temping idea!!! Thanks for all the support guys! The car is quite awesome at this point- and it's easy to forget all that happened (except for when i have to write about it!). We're definitely on the right track now... We do have some rear differential noise, possibly a broken spider gear in the rear diff- but i spoke with Gary Peloquin last week, and he assures me that we are only a couple weeks away from the release of his new rear Diff! Good news, indeed. I also have secured a complete, low mileage 2.9 VR Syncro drivetrain from a '97 Highline Gti from our partner company in Germany (look for more details on this soon!) to fortify our Rallye's underpinnings.

I was going to ask how much power you guys were making, and what you had done to the syncro to not self destruct at those power levels. People say syncro cant hold over 300whp/tq, but vortex rumors are plentiful.

I know your lips are zipped about the LSD, but I figure it never hurts to ask, right? I just wanted to know if this rear LSD will be replacing the VC AND the rear diff all together? Sorry if the question is stupid.. I'm a syncro n00b.

Unfortunately, we will still have to deal with the Viscous... but we are going to play with that a little. The rear differential is the same as an 020 front diff of the same vintage (mid 80's). That being said, they have the same weak spyder gears. The rear diff will operate in the same way as the the front diff- by distributing the torque load between both rear axles and relieving (redistributing) the stress. This is not to say that the gear set in the rear is bullet proof (or the viscous), but the upgraded rear diff will certainly eliminate a huge weakspot in the drivetrain. -Ed

Traditionally, what has been the weak link in the syncro system? I dont know an awful lot about it, but ive always heard it wouldnt hold lots of power. Its obviously the easist awd conversion for most vw's, but im especially curious as to what can/should be replaced so it could hold serious power. What are your power goals with the rallye? (sorry for a million and one questions, but I have a vr6t project (built motor/standalone/built trans/etc) and if a feasible solid awd system became doable, I might consider it in the future) Lee

The weak link has been... everything. Having a CV joint on the center driveshaft, the viscous coupler, the rear diff, etc. Everything can be beefed up in the system except for the viscous. I don't know of any good options there... except for a lot of spares. I'm going to research this pretty hard. With upgrades, the Syncro can handle a solid 300 or so HP's. Not bullet proof, but it seems to hold up O.K. We're a solid 100HP past that already- and we expect big numbers- I'm not going to say what we're really expecting, but it will be large! The highend tuning will be done front track- that's really the safest way to execute tuning that kind of HP. Stay tuned...

There are a few of us waiting for those rear diffs from Peloquin... I'm volunteering myself for low traction conditions testing starting today... my driveway is like a luge run tonight after the snow we got over the last 2 days.Ed, there was some discussion on viscous coupling tweeks awhile back over at vwsyncro.co.uk, dunno what ever came of it... but here's a link: http://www.vwsyncro.co.uk/foru...D=290
