I’m a pretty humble guy. You won’t often hear me bragging about lap times or dyno results or wicked mods. Of course, that’s mostly because I don’t have a lot to brag about (insert modesty here). But there is one skill I am quite proud of, and that is my ability to properly park a vehicle. It’s not like I was born with some supernatural gift to simultaneously operate any combination of mirrors, throttle, brakes, clutch, and steering. No, like any other great skill, mine was developed and honed by practicing... Full Story

People's inability to/lack of concern about parking is the main reason why I rarely go to malls anymore. And if I do venture out to one I am the guy choosing to walk to the far end of the lot to avoid people like this. That's some display of laziness you captured.

I think the problem has a lot to do with the current 'me first' swing in the culture. People don't care about anyone but themselves anymore. "Why should I backout and pull back in? It might take me 5-seconds". It's the same people who buy SUVs because "they're safer" yeah, for you. Oh people are also lazy

Amen. And the angled parking spaces, such as those pictured in your article, are the worst. A local mall has these angled parking spaces, and EVERY day there is some moron who has a rear tire in the next space, or their front end 1/4 of the way into the space ahead. Unbelievable! And I won't even get into parallel parking. Did they remove this portion of the drivers license test? I think so...

It's one thing if they don't include it on the exam, it's quite another when the system doesn't bother to teach it because it isn't on the exam. Issues like this are part of the reason so many drivers are only capable of handling "the bare essentials". Maybe that's why the NHTSA keeps pushing for more airbags and other active safety devices. It's too bad more time and money aren't spent on proper education, even if the skills learned aren't necessarily on the exam.

Seeing those pictures makes me realize how smart I am for parking 'way out' when I park in any parking lot. That's right, I am one of those guys that parks his car by the cement 'island' way out in the corner of the lot that actually has to walk an extra 2 minutes to get to the store. I have no door dings or bumper rash on my cars.

try living a college town full of sorrority girls trying to parallel park the new jetta or expedition their dad bought them. it usually takes about 4 or 5 tries when they finally give up and drive away. or just park in the traffic lane while they run into a store.the worst are lazy bastiges who have to either park right in front of the door at the gas stations and block the pumps, or park behind you so you are blocked in. i think that laziness and a false sense of self importance are a big factor here. last summer i got stuck behind a total moron who tried to drive his full size hummer through the parking garage. first off it had a roof rack that kept scraping the ceiling, and then it was so big he to do 3 point turns to go around the corners! barrett

When I took my license test the day I turned 16, they pretty much covered everything including parallel parking. (I live in Arizona) It wasn't much of a test though, as the space they used for the parallel parking test was about twice - three times the length of the car I was using for the test, an '03 Beetle. I looked at the test as an insult to my intelligence and skills as a driver. Parallel parking in real life isn't about getting your car in between two sets of cones that are liberally spaced thirty feet apart; it's about wedging your ride eloquently between two massive SUVs with only enough space between them that even a Geo driver would gawk at. I agree with all the points you made, Bryan. It's sad how few people actually know how to park these days. I'm only 17, but I take great pride in my parking jobs. There's a lot of satisfaction in maneuvering my car into a space, then getting out and seeing that I've perfectly aligned it between those yellow lines and thinking "dang that was pretty..." People need to relearn respect for other drivers and the personal space of others.

Try driving a forklift. They're rear-wheel steering with 6 foot steel forks sticking out the other end. You can crank the wheel and almost turn the truch around within its length. In a warehouse, if you misjudge a manouver by only a couple inches you could be running someone over, knocking stacks of product over, or putting a fork through a trailer wall. Simply put: you learn the boundaries of the vehicle, you learn how to manouver in tight spaces, or else you end-up damaging stuff and getting fired.Parking a car became so easy after driving a fork for a while. Gives you a better appreciation for any kind of parking situation. Besides, it's always fun to watch someone take two attempts at backing into a space when you just did it perfectly on the first try

Yeah, who wants to take a guess at what percentage of these people flung their doors open into the car next to them after they were done "parking?" I'll bet its pretty high. Total lack of respect.

I hate the people that can't park their cars properly. I am 16 and just got my license about 3 months ago. When I took drivers education and drivers training there was nothing mentioned about parking at all. Now I was lucky enough to have a father who took time to take me out practicing driving which included parking. While I am not the best parker out there, I try to take the time to park squarely and to stay within my bounds, I just wish the rest of the world would take the time to do so.

The only time I don't park fully centered in the spot is when I'm parking next to a cement island. I get as close to the curb as possible so that nobody hits me on the other side of the car.Nice op-ed, Bryan.

Lazyness and a lack of respect for others I think is the underlying reason for this problem. I think that standard driver education should include all of the skills necessary for a commercial drivers liscence. In michigan at least, demonstrating the amount of skill needed for group A commercial liscence you will have no problem with parallel parking.

i got my permit in michian and my license in missouri. in michigan during driver training i had to practice backing into a space and paralell parking, in missouri when i got my license last may, i had to paralell park. those shots right there are rediculous, ive never seen parking that bad here.

Absolutely! Count me in as well! Seriously, though, great write-up! It's so amazing at how much people will take a pleasant suggestion and interpret it as a middle finger being shoved up their backside, then retaliate as if you just stole their eggs from their nest. I know I've said things like, "Please, be careful" very nicely after seeing someone have a really close call with just missing a parked car. The response is almost always something about shoving something in a place I'd prefer not to. It's like you're automatically an ******* just because you witnessed their sloppy driving.

I couldn't agree more! Things are getting bad out there now. A little off topic, but I ride the train to work every day and you should see the "Me First" mentality there is out there! I can be early to the train station and be first in line (not that I really care), when the train shows up, I'm bumped to the back before I even know it. I am courteous though, I still try to let ladies first, etc.Now back on topic of parking!

No... IMHO, the worst is parallel parking in the city where street parking is tight. Parking by feel is the norm. Painted bumpers? Forget it, 'cuz the corners will be all scuffed and the flat surfaces of the rear bumper get nailed by license plates as well as plate frames, mounting bolts, etc. BTW, from an unscientific sample, SUVs are the worst offenders... esp the ones with the spare mounted on the rear. Lucky for me I have a garage... and black, unpainted bumpers.

Nice writeup. When I'm alone driving, I'll pick the first spot I find in the parking lot. If the car next to me is parked into "my" spot, I park as close as possible to them, keeping the passenger side to them so I can still get out. I then make a quick note of make, model, license plate, and go on my way. I try to get close enough that they couldn't fit a person between the cars if they tried to without crossing any of the boundaries of "my" spot.I do this in the hope that maybe the extra minute the idiots spend trying to pull out of their parking spot (or the extra difficulty in getting in their car) will teach them to park between the lines the next time. - Fab

Pure Genius! I will try this. I knew this had to be a great writeup the second I saw the title on the homepage. I think by far THE WORST parking lots are those at grocery stores, or rather, any store that owns a collection of buggies or carts. I actually work at a Giant Eagle, and for the first year or so I would go out to do buggies for about an hour each shift. Let me tell you it is amazing, purely shocking rather how lazy some people are. I stand there and watch them after unloading their groceries and then search for the nearest "buggie station." Then, when they realize it is "too" far away, they proceed to "place" it either between cars or in the grassy area....after looking at me 40 yards away and still doing it. Drove me NUTS! What you call the "domino" effect, we lot attendants call the "monkey-see, monkey-do" effect. It begins with one cart positioned so it will not roll down the lot. Then another propped up against the first for "sturdiness." Then what was a parking space...or 2, or 5, becomes a new buggie station that is marked only by the gleaming chrome and orange handle bar screaming, "Here is a good place for your buggie!"

I was at the mall doing some last minute Christmas shopping, I never have to have a front row spot, I'm not lazy, so I just get the first spot I see. Anyway, the Mall is packed to the brim, I drove around for 10 minutes without seeing a single parking space, then I see an empty spot next to this yellow protege 5, so I quickly zip to the spot. What do I see? That little yellow Protege 5 DOUBLE PARKED, AT THE MALL, ON CHRISTMAS F'ING EVE! I was boiling, it took everything I had not to do something drastic. I wound up parking across the street at the applebee's. I did however make sure to stop by his car on the way in to leave a note: "If you **** like you park, You'll never get it in. Happy Holidays, *******." That made me feel a little better.

I've done that as well, depending on what car I'm driving. I doubt the message ever gets through, though. What I omitted from the original piece is that I am very particular about what I park next to. As a rule, I avoid parking to the left of any domestic 2-door car, such as a Camaro or Regal/Grand Prix/Cutlass. The doors weigh like 800 lbs a piece, and I'm guessing most owners aren't that careful with them. I also tend to avoid minivans. Even though they have sliding doors and should therefore be less threatening, they tend to belong to families with small, careless kids. I've also seen many a mother pull a shopping cart right between her van and a car to unload the kids from the cart. Minivans are my enemy. And last, but not least, I generally do not park next to anything with a gold "L" on the grille (especially RX300s). I have found that these owners (especially those with the gold trim) could absolutely care less about you or your inferior whatchmacallit car. You have been warned.

Nope, you aren't the only one, but this particular skill has begun to spread itself very thinly...as someone else said, it is why we who value our straight door panels choose to park "way out" as close to the curb as we can.As for this comment:

Grow up. My girlfriend can park my F350 just about anyplace you would park your beetle, and probably without the need for adjustment. And instead of snickers from guys on the street, she gets respect.
