 Good/cheap/all around tire for GTI?« »

Hey All,
I have a 91 GTI 8v on Teardrops and it's time for new tires. I was wondering if theres any good all around tire for a reasonable price that you all have experience with. For example, the guys on the 914 forum at Pelican Parts all rave about a certain tire (cant remember the name) that is relatively cheap, but a good all around performer. Is there any tire like that for the GTI? I mainly use the car as a daily driver, but like to do some mountain road driving every once in a while. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Nokian WR's are a good all season for a snowy/rainy environment. They do exceptionally well in snow, because they are Nokians. That's all I have to say about all season tires, I personally don't believe in the "one size fits all conditons" theory.

Sorry...I didnt mean all around as in all season. I live on the central coast in CA so all we get is sun and some rain (a fair ammount as of late). So I guess I'm just looking for a good performance, daily driver tire. Thanks!

I've had pretty good luck with the Sumitomo HTR-200's on the Miata.

They are under $40 in the 185/60R14 size, and grip is decent, especially when new. They don't do bad in the rain, either. They do not handle snow at all, just park the car. But in your climate, that's not a big deal.

Thanks for the replies....
As far as budget, I really don't know. This is my first car (bought it a few months ago) and haven't had to buy tires yet. I'm going to do some research on tire prices, and then I'll see what my budget is. The $40-$70 per tire sounded reasonable to me...

Thanks!

I have had great tire wear and very tolerable performance (wet and dry) from Kumho 732s. Last ones I bought were $36@ plus ship from Tire Rack. Mounted on a 90 GLI with 14" teardrops (195-60-14).

Keep em rotated...but that's true for ANY tire mounted on an A2...

I have some experience with cooper cobra g/t radials... their inexpensive and have tremendous grip for an economy sporty tire... look into those

Where can you get this size. Is it a winter, summer, or all season? I've been looking for either 215/40, 205/45, or 205/40 sizes in a 15' everywhere and can't find them.

If snow's not an issue, try Falken Azenis from edgeracing.com -- like 'em on my Miata (turn-in not as crisp as my old Yoko AVS-i's, but they stick like glue). FWIW, I'm planning on Falken Ziex for my Jetta within the next week or two....

have you tried http://www.tirerack.com? my dad and i have been ordering tires from here for YEARS and have never had a problem, im glad to see the site is getting out there. there are several decent to good tired floating around $50-$60 per tire. i have also found shipping to be super reasonable, around $25 for 4 tires. ive paid more than that to get small **** sent on ebay.

kumho 712's are good in the rain, and good in the dry. They are no good on snow, but that's no problem for you.

They wear pretty fast though, and seem to puncture really easily. I've had to repair cabby's 712's like 5 times from FOD, and I've never picked up a puncture on my bridgestones, michelins or good years on any other car in years. Could be that cabby just has bad luck though...

Hmmm, a lot of these tires that you guys are saying are from tirerack or edgeracing, dont show up there. For example, a lot of you have mentioned the Falken 326's...the only tire edgeracing shows for my car (91 GTi 8v with teardrops) are the Falken 512's. Are they jsut a better tire?

Due to the ammount of people that have 'confirmed' these, I think I'll probably go with the Falkens (whichever model they are).

Any more thoughts?

Thanks!

Anyone ever heard of the Fulda Assuro H's? That's what the guy at the tire shop is telling me to get. He says he likes them better than the Falkens (which they also sell)... I'm hesitant being I've never even heard of that tire company before...

the Falken 326 Ziex is a better tire. I had Kuhmos on the front and the Falkens in the rear, and when I swapped them front to rear, I noticed a big difference in cornering ability, and now my car is a little more tailhappy too

Try the ES100's from Yokahama. So far so good on my 'rado steelies. They're fairly cheap and have well-balanced performance.

I've had two sets of AVS ES 100's on my MkIV and can recommend them in the larger size, I don't see why they wouldn't perform well in the smaller size. I'm also considering running a set on my MkII when next needed (lesser yokohama's on there now). Excellent traction dry, and decent wet (multiple Western Washington state winters and minimal problems).

I've also heard good things about the Falken's and Kumho's, good luck with whatever you go with

I used to have Fulda's on my GTI when I lived in Germany. I thought they were the best tires ever! You probabaly haven't heard of them in the US b/c their market penetration isn't what it should be. I don't know anything specifically about the Assuro's but I like the company overall as well as their quality!
