Do you have a capacitor for your sound system???

Caps don't really help, i mean they do a little but its like a tiny fix. I need a bigger alternator, i know, because i have 3 amps delivering over 3500 watts. I am going to get a cap, and it will help, but a bigger alternator will cure the problem. I just can't find one bigger than the stock one that will work with the a/c

Using a capacitor is not a "tiny" fix. Get a capacitor big enough and it will handle just about any power you want. Also, most people running that kind of power use a boat battery in their car instead. Do some research.

What you need is an isolator, basically it allows you to hook-up 2 batteries to it and both get charged, except the main battery is for the car the second for your system. And the "boat" battery or a deep cycle battery as it's really called is what you should run. Also adding caps is ok, it just stores enough energy in them to prevent your amps from "sucking" all the current from the electrical system, sort of act like regulators to maintain max output amperage

Okay, your not understanding. I know what i need, and i need a larger alternator. A deep cycle battery just puts even MORE strain on the alternator, causing it to work harder. I know how these things work, i do it for a living. Caps don't do ****, unless they have the power to supply them. All i asked was a simple question, not for you jacka$$es to tell me what you think i need and don't need.

The OEM VR6 alt. is 120a. Maybe if nothing else you could custom fit one of those?

you could pull apart your alternator, and change the stator to delta configuration... but then yould be ****ed in the low RPMs.

im with the other guys .. cap or battery should do it, or look around for a bigger "wye" stator that will fit in your stock alternator

I don't see how the alternator would be affected if you have or don't have A/C?

 Re: (sony224422) »« »

yeah i see what your saying if its too big.. except that the engine should be able to keep up with a pretty big alternator.. like a 200 amp one. I know you guys don't really specialize in this sort of stuff.. i do, and i know that having an extra battery and a cap is awesome to have, i have one in my other car, deep cycle battery, not boat.. but anyways, the ONLY way those things can work right is if they get enough juice.. which starts with the alternator.

Yeah but I mean as long as you have the belt made for a/c cars you should be fine right?

No, i looked at them, and the little gear thingy that the belt goes on thats on the alternator is different than the stock one. I think you might be able to switch them over, im not sure though..

There is no need for a bigger alternator, I don't understand where you got that idea from but if you want to f**k with your car then go right ahead. A bigger alternator isn't something that I "think" that you don't need, it is something that I KNOW that you don't need. Frankly 3500 watts is absolutely nothing spectacular. If you were drawing upwards of 10,000 watts power output then you may need to start searching for a new alternator, but otherwise it makes no sense

He is probably just looking for an excuse to put in a chrome or a polished alternator.

nOOb: "You see, the chrome helps to dissapate heat needed by the 3500 watt amps of POWER!!!"

Anyone who thinks "3500 watts is absolutely nothing spectacular" is the one thats misinformed. 3500 watts is equal to 4.7 Hp! and would require 243 amps @ 14.4 volts with an amplifier that was 100% efficient.

Where is this power coming from? While a car is running an alternator is responsible for providing ALL of a car's electrical needs including charging batteries and caps and powering important accessories such as headlights, windshield wipers, a/c fans as well as any added audio equipment.

Adding extra batteries and stiffening capacitors only adds more load to a sorely taxed alternator and would only serve to exaserbate the situation.

If Sony says he needs a bigger alternator then he needs one. Why don't y'all try and help him out instead of showing your ignorance.

Frankly I'm baffled as to how an electronic tech with 12 years experience wouldn't understand the situation and offer more assistance than "if you know what you need then by all means do it".

Sony isn't asking whether he needs a bigger alternator. He's asking where he can find one.

All of you who say that a bigger alternator won't help and a new battery will are just fn stupid. A batter will only help him if he only listens too his system with the car off. When the car is running the batter doesn't do much of anything. A cap would help a little bit but a cap supplys enough power for a short loud bass note then it has to recharge and if the alternator doesn't have the power to recharge it, which in this case it doesn't it will do nothing but strain your electrical system more because your alternator will be trying to power the system and charge the cap at the same time. You guys are dumb. You would rather try and sound smart than actually help someone out. I would buy a high output alt. and then a cap if you need it. Oh and i dunno what kind of system you have but 3500 watts is alot of power. The bad thing is that all of u guys prolly don't even know anything and are out bumbin your sony's every weekend so just do everyone a favor and don't ever try and help anyone again.

OK, I agree most of you don't know what you are talking about. A bigger alternator will give you more Amperage PERIOD. So now back to the question. WHERE CAN YOU FIND A LARGER ALTERNATOR? WHO SELLS THEM? IS THERE A LINK? I too am looking for one, so I and i'm sure SONY would like to know.
