 Is there any Ferrari 348 love?« »

Funny, I can't recall us ever discussing this car. I personally really like them! Here's what I wouldn't mind knowing: how is it to drive? What's the maintanence like on the V8's? They have really come down in price and therefore have started to catch my eye. There is one local to me that makes me feel squishy in my pantaloons.

A buddy of mine, will944 here on the vortex, has a father who owned one...348TS to be exact. I can't really tell you much about them, other than the sound of the intakes right behind your head was intoxicating. Definitely a stiff ride, but I would't expect anything else.

I know a lot of people here will tell you that there are a lot of other cars that are "better" for the money, but they've probably never even ridden in one...let alone driven one. Riding in a Ferrari was something special, I can only imagine what its like to wring one out.

BTW, his father recently traded up to a F355 F1 Spyder, so that should tell you something.

friends neighbor has a fly yellow one, that was formally a 348 challenge car, went thru the process of making it street legal. not bad looking, got a ride in it and wasn't all that impressed, but it definately turned some heads...

much rather one of these bad boys (yes even over a 360 modena, not so much the new F430 though)

but from what i have seen the 348's go for fairly cheap (considering it is a ferrari)

First Ferrari I ever got to drive was a 348 Berlinetta, that was so awesome, never driven a mid engined Italian before, I was suprised at how the pedal box was way over, took some getting used to, but since I'd driven a Karmann Ghia at the time it wasnt too hard.
348 will ALWAYS have a special place in me

348's are nice cars, id rather have a 355 as well but here are the three 348's ive been in.

compared to later model's like the F355, the 348's seem clunkier in the shifting and a lil harder to drive maybe. just my observation.

The 348 has the cheesegrater looking strakes but they don't look as over the top as the testarossa and 512TR's of the day. The interior is simple yet elegant and I think with a nice set of challenge wheels it'd make for a great car. From what I've read though the 355 is much easier to service

I don't recall where I read this, but I read that 348's had/have a lot of mechanical woes. Kinda remember reading that the transmissions were crap and cost a TON to replace. The thing I read said to avoid the 348, and make every possible effort to get a 355 instead.

The 348TB/348TS had an odd engine/transmission layout. Unlike the 308/328, the 348 had it's engine mounted longitudinally. The Mondial was also updated and face-lifted in 1989 and it too got the 348 engine and transverse transmission and was designated Mondial T.

I love Ferrari's, even the ones with V8's in the back. But I have had the joy of piloting both the F355 and it's older cousin the 348. Although they share a lot in the basic structure, the 348 was much more inert and clumsy. It's a great car to look at, especially as a black spider, but as soon as speed rises on a good twisty road-especially one with bumps- the chassis has no idea what to do. The F355 was almost supple over the same roads. Much better steering and gearchange... not to mention the engine! I think Classic and Sportscar put it best in describing the 348 as having a "Wooden Chassis".

...that said, I would'nt kick it out of the sack!

That's a starter Ferrari. I mean, it's better than anything I own, but it's not exactly the pinnacle of the Ferrari lover's desire. It's a good car to find out if you really want to own a Ferrari without dropping the big bucks, and they're old enough that they won't probably won't depreciate a whole lot as long as they're well kept. You can sometimes find deals on 348s and 355s because people buy them without realizing that "I can afford the payment on a used Ferrari" is far different from "I can afford to own a Ferrari."

If you really want to know a lot about any Ferrari check out Ferrarichat.com - that is a really good site.

Actually, you are only partially right. The 348 and Mondial T had the engine mounted like the 355 and 360, a transverse layout. The "T" in Modial T stands for transverse. In the earlier 308GT4/308/328 V-8 Ferraris, the motor was mounted across the body, like a MR2, or FWD set-up.

The car is a blast to drive!! Much easier than our current 355F1. Less power (~320 w/ tubi) which makes it fun to rip around in and toss around.

Yes there are tons of other cars with more power for the money. But I tell you what.....the car is worth every penny!

Here's a pic of the old car:

Ummm, the 348, 355, and 360 have longitudinally mounted engines. The bold type in your quote means transverse.

Its 'bout time you chimed in, Will, being one of the only people here that has probably ever actually driven one.

God I love that car, even though it is long gone. Tubi + Italian V8 = Pure Sex, end of story. Best performing car of its time, maybe not...but it is 100% Ferrari. Those that have any idea will understand. Its best that I don't try to explain any more. All I know is that I will own a Ferrari at some point in my life, even if its "only" a 348.
