MK4 pedals: Heel and toe | « » 2:02 PM 4-27-2005 | |
|
Does anyone know of a good pedal set for heel / toe? I have the AE with rubber studded aluminum pedals, which suck. Your foot slips off the side of the brake pedal, the gap between brake / gas is too wide, and too deep unless you're really HARD on the brakes (read: into the ABS). I was thinking of a cover for the gas that would bring it up and in about 1/2" to the brake. If there isn't anything available, I will just make one. Thanks!

They are probably a pain to install but I saw a set of sparco pedals that have a little piece of the gas pedal that sticks out to make it easier to blip the throttle. I have also heard that neuspeed has something similar so Id start there.

hehe what timing; we were just talking about this at VIR yesterday. Sparco makes a couple nice sets. i've had my eye on the Curva set for almost a year now.

I have TT pedal cover & am finally getting use to it. You foot position is different in this car than most. I put the ball of my foot in the middle right side of the brake & roll my foot sideways while sliding my heel towards the center console to hit the throttle. This is the only way I found to do it without fully pushing down on the brake.

I don't know if the TT covers are the same, but my foot slips off the side of the brake. The gap between brake and gas is so large that I end up moving my foot so far to the right on the brake that it won't catch any of the rubber studs. Anyway, I'll check out the Sparco pedal set. It's only like $15.

Just so you know, you can only left foot brake while on the accelerator for about a second before the drive by wire fun police come and close your throttle. You need to unplug the brake switch (no brake lights) to defeat this for proper left foot braking and boost building. You can hard wire in the lights if you need lights.

this is why I jumped ship on my MkIV, nice to know that it is fixable, but I will keep my MkII now that i have thrown everything at it. Heel Toe on a MkIV SUCKS, the pedal placement is horrid, the gas is way to far back.. It would be sick to make a gas pedal that was rased and in a J shape, That way you could just have your toes on the brake and heel on the gas extention that would be under it.....dig? I saw this on a old skool Porschem it looked killer!!!!

I ordered the Sparco Curva (pictured above) which has the heel extension on the gas. I would rather have a toe extension on the gas. Interesting that no one seems to make this. The Sparco Curva is the widest gas pedal I could find at (only) 2"! If I need to I will make something to raise it and / or mount it as far left as possible. There are two ways to blip the throttle - (1) Using the outside flat portion of your foot - think pinky toe (2) Use the heel of your foot. I do (1) since I have never has a gas pedal be high enough for my heal to reach it while the toes are on the brake. Since the ball of my foot has to be on 2 pedals at once, they need to be close in width and in heigh off the floor when you're hard on the brakes. This works GREAT in the last Ford Probe/MX6. Terrible in the Mk4. And yes, try warming your brake pads coming to grid at an autocross. The throttle cut is pretty funny. But on a road course, I need to rev-match downshifts so I don't fry my clutch. Or at least get the revs UP so they're close when I go down a gear.

I have the sparco set, forget the name but it works well though the little nubs that came with it are starting to fall out. Maybe time for a new pedal set.

The Curva's work nicely. No bling for $29, but the most functional set of pedals that Sparco makes. The only real PIA is drilling into the pedal arms to install.Personally, I use the ball of my foot for blipping the throttle. On Mk4's the gas pedal sits a good inch in as opposed to the brake pedal, but when hard on the brakes, the two even out nicely. One note - Sparco has discontinued the Curva pedals. Might want to grab a set while you still can - see sig. | Quote, originally posted by sanch0 » | | hehe what timing; we were just talking about this at VIR yesterday. I've been using the Sparco Curva pedals on my MkIV for a few years now and have been happy. I seem to have the opposite problem. When I'm hard of the brakes when downshifting the throttle is too HIGH for me. I think that new pads and fluid will help this immensely, though.

the sparco carbon pedals are very good for HT. they also come with grip tape so your feet dont slip off.

It's just a matter of twisting your foot the right way for our cars. You won't be able to do it like you see in race videos. Once I started blipping the gas with the SIDE of my foot instead of trying to do it with the heel, I haven't had a problem since.

Yep, can't do it! Did it that way in my Probe, but not in my GTI. Soon, though. Sparco pedals are on my workbench.

I've got the R32 covers for my pedals, which does bring the gas pedal out about a half to 3/4. i find the roll over like mentioned before works good for street driving but serious autocross ussually ends up with the RPM's kicking up in the last bit of the break pedal. i've adjusted my driving habits and seat position such as i can now pile my heal all the way down on the break and then tap the throttle for that sometimes needed 1st gear. however i ussually left foot break so when you forget you need to shift i'm Sh*t outa luck.--JT

Razo makes a pedal that you can adjust to be closer to the brake. I have it in my golf and works awesome. I was having the same problem orginally with heel toe. Got the pedal and no problems. If you dont mind having parts from japan on your euro buy it. It is like $40.
