VWvortex Feature Car: 1998 Jetta GLX Coupe« »

by: Jon Timmerman

“Well, if you’re going to be biased against this car, why not write your article on Mike’s coupe?” my editor said, as he pointed towards a group of people encircling a car. As the SFL-GTG crowd parted I was greeted by a vision of Jazz Blue bliss. “Open Arms” by Journey played in my head and I felt like running to the car in slow motion, Baywatch style.

“I’ll do it.”

finally a coupe done right, longer doors. Although the top rear, of the quarter window should have been cut down, to make the c pillar a little wider. But all in all a very nice car.

Exactly what i was thinking. It's an amazing car, but with that one detail fixed it would have been PERFECT.

You can't cut tempered glass, and making new glass isn't cheap.

That's me too I'm not a fan of the MK3 I couldn't sell my 96 Jetta fast enough then I bought a 2000 Jetta TDI. But what you did to this car is great making it in a "Jetta Coupe" I really like this Mk3 (that's something I thought I would NEVER say) I love the fact you made the MK4 DASH fit that looks so cool. The ONLY thing I would have done differently then you, Is the engine would be a TDI everything else is perfect. But I don't know after all that work you put in the car that i would drive it as my "daily driver" Around here to many people don't care where there shopping cars end up, or if they open there doors to far and dent the car next to them!

I had $1500 worth work done to my car last fall and then the car was stored all winter in the first week out of storage I found a shopping cart on the front bumper and there is a small scrach there now
If I had your car and found that I would go crazy. But that's just me great job on your car!

What ticks me off more than a post I've seen a hundred times is some vortex wizard telling some guy to do a search. If you know the answer just tell the person.

Saw this car at Southern Volksfest this year and last. I almost overlooked the MKIV dash but then noticed it as I was about to walk off.

Truly a gem, Mike. Congrats on the feature.

if there was such a mk3 hall of fame your definitely in it! i gotta give ya tons of props for making a wonderful ride. seen some mk3 jetta convert but none top yours - really sweet ride!!! i also like what you did with your engine bay, showing only the engine and re-routing everything, which i would like to know where the other components were placed? overall, good job mon!

Saw the car at WF last year... exept the rear quarter window (gotta make compromises sometimes) it was pretty amazing!! We were waiting for the rest of our group, trying to get them on our walkie-talkies... The car was right next to us in the exhibition area. I told my friend Frnacis "check out the blue MkIII over there.." He replied: "yeh, it's nice..." not noticing the missing doors!! When he finally noticed, he told our friends on the walkie-talke "Holy $hit guys!! Come quick, I'm standing next to the sickest MkIII ever!!!"

And that's how it happened!!

didnt this used to be a 24 valver? or was that another mk3 coupe w/ a mk4 interior painted jazz blue?

in any event, very nice car, even w/ the funny looking c-pillar...

quote"

"Then you’ll see there is something awry about the back windows; this Jetta seems different than any other. Chalk that one up to Eastside Motorsports for converting the sedan to a coupe using GTI body panels and doors. Perhaps the most amazing aspect about this project, though, is that other than the structural conversion and paint job, Mike did everything you see himself"

unquote"

Yes if you have some type of comprehension you can see right from the article (second paragraph) that i took no credit for the 2door conversion

thanks guys

Indeed, that car is pretty much the automotive equivalent of having angry sex with Angelina Jolie while duck-hunting with rocket-launchers alongside Satan himself.

Yeah, this car originally had a 24v VR6... Eastside took it out before selling it to Tony from Torque Video Magazine.

And the color, if I'm not mistaken, is Porcelain Blue... not Jazz Blue...

right right...my bad on the color...seems like a LOT of trouble to put the 24V in, then have to take it out...i imagine a lot of the harness (if not all of it) would have to come out too.....

was it a golf hood or a jetta hood? i want to do a light swap with the golf lights that have the mk4 look but i wasn't sure if i needed to swap hoods as well, as i've seen the weld on extensions for both.
