 FOX's "The Inside" is pretty good!« »

I had high hopes for this show, given that I am a complete Slayerhead and the show is being written and produced by Tim Minear and Jane Espenson and David Fury will be writing as well.

Rachel Nichols, who plays "Rebecca Locke" is a real find. She's got a real "Jody Foster' quality... Beautiful, but "deep", with a very expressive face. I was impressed with her performance in the pilot.

The plot is nothing terribly new... It's a mix of CSI, Without a Trace, and L&O:SVU... But it is dark and creepy and very well done in my opinion.

The twist is that Rebecca was abducted and kept as a ccaptive for 18 months as a child and uses tht "pain" to be a better investigator.

I watched it, and yeah it was pretty enjoyable. But like you said, nothing new. Makes me wonder if the show is going to last.

Well, a summer slot sure doen't show much faith.

FOX killed Minear's EXCELLENT Wonderfalls too.

The Inside
The real mystery in this dark crime drama's premiere wasn't whodunit, but why do it at all? In a television landscape littered with crime-scene investigators, special-victims' units and cold cases, the police-procedural-with-a-cute-woman-lead may be creatively deader than the gruesome victim this show's team of FBI agents discovered in last night's opening sequence.

Admittedly, the scene provided a nice jolt when it was revealed that the body belonged to one of their colleagues, but the episode quickly descended into yet another tale of profiler vs. twisted serial killer. Heck, co-star Adam Baldwin even name-checked Clarice Starling, confirming the long shadow cast by the brilliant Silence of the Lambs over the series.

As the Starling of this show, starlet Rachel Nichols looks like she'd be more suited to romantic comedy than gritty detective work (in fact, she played the waitress in Samantha's threesome on Sex and the City), not that the first script gave her much to work with. Her character's childhood trauma is supposed to imbue her with uncanny abilities but, oddly enough, she wasn't shown doing much actual profiling, unless you count looking in a mirror and hallucinating a sinister figure behind her — yet another cliché of the genre, along with the now de rigueur victim-on-a-webcam that also appeared in the pilot.

The only savior of the episode (not to mention of Nichols' Agent Locke) turned out to be Peter Coyote's Virgil "Web" Webster, who provided a refreshingly unsentimental, even Machiavellian, approach to leadership: "This girl has a gift forged in pain, and she wants me to use her." That's one of episode's few great lines, all of which were delivered by Webster. If executive producers Tim Minear and Jane Espenson want this series to avoid the fate of their last few (Wonderfalls, Tru Calling, Firefly), they should try to make its bite as good as Coyote's bark.

Pretty much on the mark.

didn't keep my attention very well. It'd be better if the "good guys" didn't always get the "bad guys" at the end of the show.

This show has really found it's footing, the stories are good and complex, and last nights double-feature sets up the final few eps that should be VERY interesting.

So, FOX, in it's infinite wisdom... Is killing it.

THE INSIDE Out!!
Minear Says It’s Done!!

I am – Hercules!!

Tim Minear, creator and mastermind of “The Inside,” says he thinks the Fox Network will air three more episodes of his FBI crime drama, then be done with it.

“On Thursday they needed to extend their options on the cast and decided not to,” posts Minear on timminear.net. “Considering it would have been chump change for them, it basically means we're done.”

Minear goes on to say he expects all 13 filmed episodes, and perhaps even the two discarded pilots, are likely already headed for a season-box DVD, and that fans shouldn’t bother lobbying Fox on saving the show.

Way to go FOX.

Katie Finneran (from Fox-dumped Wonderfalls) and Adam Baldwin (from Fox-dumped Firefly) were on this show (probably due to the Minear connection).

They can't seem to get a break from Fox...
