 VWvortex Feature Car: 1991 GTI VR6« »

by: Cherise LaPine

Although Mk2 VR6 conversions are a dime a dozen nowadays, there was a time when the swap was less common. The desire for a fun street car, distinguished from the crowd with a little polished perfection, is what motivated Zach Kurth to design his 1991 GTI about three years ago. As his technical skills were somewhat lacking for a project of this scope (“I am a bartender, not a mechanic,” he explained) he selected S&L Imports in Loretto, MN, to complete his vision. The goal was relatively simple, in theory.

“I felt like I needed something new at the time,” Zach said. “This was the second VR6 Mk2 swap in our state.”

I'll try and post up some updated pics of the car. It was recently restored to a complete car again and is back on the roads as my friend's daily driver.

“268-whp in a Mk2 is crazy,” Zach said. “The feeling you get off the line, or dropping to third on the freeway, is unreal."

Haha, I have actually heard him say that more than once.

They waited just long enough so that this Minnesota car booted off the other Minnesota car from the main page. Boo hoo. It would have been sweet to see them both up at the same time.

Hey guys thanks for all the kind words. The GTi was real fun, went like a bat out of hell, and did not look to bad either. I took this car apart last year so I could start the Project Retro Jetta. ( see the link in my sig).

All said and done the Jetta is way quiker, and is done cleaner. The jetta is only tunned half way and will already out do everything the GTi could.

Here are a few pics of the black car over the 2 years I owned it.
