Project Lifted 4000Q BEGINS! "4x4000" | « » 3:16 PM 8-14-2005 | |
|
I just recieved my new set of Boge turbo gas struts from Blau yesturday and I'm really excited to get them in. I've got a pair of Audi 90 20v springs that are all painted up and ready to go. I'm ordering new bushings and whatnot. I'm gunna be putting in new control arm bushings all the way around. New ball joints all the way around hopefully. New front tie rod ends. And possibley new reary strut mounts.... Hopefully the car will drive much better when it's all said and done!Questions: Where can i get the little ruber bushings for the sway bar links? I've already replaced my front strut mounts/bushings, would it be a good idea to replace the rears as well? Also I might have a friend of mine who works at a machine shop help me make and weld in some "spacers" to sit between the spring the and spring perch to give me another inch or so. However the 90 springs may lift it enough for my likings. I don't want any radical angles on my cv joints and i'm not sure how much of a lift my boge turbo gas struts will allow...
Anyway I'll post pics and keep yall updated... That is if anyone cares. I realize that this project is probably only exciting to me. lol

Ive got the 90 20v springs in my car as well. You shouldnt need the spacers at all unless your looking for crazy lift. Ive got those paired with bilstien HD's and its awesome in the snow, you'll love it.

Ya sounds like it'll be a lot of fun. Quick qeustion tho.... How does the sway bar linkage and the tie rods work with the lift? Is there enough "slack" in them that the few inch lift doesn't matter? I know that the tie rods can move up and down quite a bit but I wasn't sure how far and how far the sway bar would allow as well...

I went with the strut bellows on my struts, which I am putting back together as we speak... The factory used them in some heavy duty application - probably police cars or taxi cabs. They are made by KYB and seem pretty well made - and include a bump stop so you only have one item instead of two... Plus I would think they keep the gunk out better than just a dust cap, which would be beneficial to you as you are going for a more off-road setup... -edit inserted image...

I put the same KYB bump stops/dust bellows in on my car. It was not easy, as they are made for the stock sized shocks. I have yellow Konis, which have a thicker stem than stock shocks.

Yes I am dealing with that now, did you have to make the hole bigger or will it just eventually slip on if you try hard enough?-edit: Ok, well I ended up boring the hole out a little larger with a 13/16 (20mm) wood bore drill bit... It is still smaller than the shaft of the strut so there are no worries there, so it still required some finesse to get on but finally both are on tight...

Where'd you get your strut bellows? And how much were they? I've seen them on car part websites for around $15. Ugh another $60 into this project... (now this "ugh" is coming from a part time college student who $60 is money hard to spend at the moment )

Get pics up soon. Can you get a photo with, like, a 1984 escort underneath your car? You're going to put great big monster truck tires on your car, aren't you?How much lift are you planning on?

LMAO.... I'm affraid I'm not going to be lifting two feet or anything. Just a few inches. However if I had the resources/knowledge/ability to do a two foot lift I'd probably do it. For now I'm putting on my Audi 90 springs and going to drive it like that and if it's not quite high enough I'll consider having a friend (who workds at a machine shop) help me machine and weld some spacers onto the spring perch to allow for a few more inch lift... I'm starting the tear down today and we'll see how everything goes. I'll take a before and after picture too. I'm also going gungho on some of the motor too. Gunna take the intake off and paint it, take the exhaust off and paint it, replace two broken exhaust studs and cleanup all my intake hoses etc. Trying to get that idle nice and smooth.

Update: So first day of work - First off I don't own an impact wrench . So getting the upper nut off the strut rod was not so fun. I got the left one off but with my luck the end of the right strut rod stripped out.... not so sure how being that the hex bit was a tight fit... but none the less I'm screwed. After getting the entire front right spring perch out I compressed the spring, removed it, then began removing the strut. and to my surprise a whole mess of dark green fluid poored out with it.... Hooray the strut had no more fluid in it.... wow..... So the project continues as I replace my crappy blown struts with my nice new Boge Turbo gas . Quick question. I sat my stock 4000 q springs next to my newly aquired Audi 90 20v springs and they were exactly the same size... did I get hornswaggled by the guy selling them to me or are they just stiffer or what?....

pheeewwww. I was nervous. I thought that I might have bought another set of 4000 springs or they weren't out of a 20 valve 90. Happy now! Quick Question #2: I bought new control arm bushings and now have the fun task of getting the old ones out.... any tip or tricks? Beating them senseless with a hammer hasn't worked so far.

Ok I'm in the process of putting the springs back on the spring perch. My question is, when putting the strut mount bushing/slotted nut on the end of the strut rod do I tighten it down all the threads to the end? Or do I go halfway... how far? I'd assume all the way but theres like 2+ inches of threads and when I took the assembly apart the bushing wasn't tightened all the way to the end as far as I can remember. Im my Haynes manual the picture doesn't show very much threads sticken out of the top of the mount. Not sure....

Yes, you tighten the upper bearing all the way down, so that there is enough room for the nylon nut on top when you put the strut back into the car.

Well the thing is if I tighten that slotted nut (parts websites call it a strut mount bushing) all the way then theres a ton of threading sticking out the top after I get the nylon nut tightened all the way down. Anyway that doesn't really matter. I'll tighten it all the way down that way there'll all be the same. This is the slotted nut I'm talking about.
I'll be posting some pictures of my painfully slow progress on the suspension lift. My only worry is that the lift won't be high enough. But if it isn't I can always get some spacers machined to fit between the spring and the perch... if the struts will allow for any higher of a lift...

To my dismay I'm starting to realize that I won't be able to fit as wide of a tire on as I was hoping... ugh.... I wanted some big ol' mud tires. Well basically offroad tires that were as knobby as I could find.... but I can't fit a very wide tire on or i'll rub... how wide can you go? And can I get some spacers to allow for a little more clearance?Update: I just figured out a way to get my old control arm bushings out, however it's really slow and really frustrating. So far I've drilled a whole mess of holes through the rubber, then took a jig saw and cut out the middle part. Then took a hack saw and sawed a groove in the outer metal casing and then folded it in on itself. Keep in mind that I'm an 18 year old college student and I don't own many tools or have any funds . Paying $70 to my local suspension garages to press them out wasn't in the cards for me.

If you can get ahold of a bhutane torch, you can do this a lot easier by toasting the old bushings really good. Burn them so hard the rubber melts and the control arm and outer shell of the bushing is glowing red, then you can easily tap out the outer shell with a hammer. Less work and works faster.

He He that looks like some fun! UPDATE: I have the front completely done. New Boge turbo struts and springs are gunna do wonders! . New control arm bushings, new front tie rod ends, everythings painted and all cleaned up. It's looking great. I just got the right rear dismantled after A LONG frustrating procedure. I couldn't get the driveshaft to come through. I suppose years and years of torque the splines just won't let go. So far all three struts were in conditions ranging from sad to just plain pathetic. The right rear was leaking fluid but still had a little bit of dampening. The front left was pretty much useless the fluid was all leaked out and down in the insert shaft (not sure what to call it) and as for the front left.... There was no fluid and the strut was doing ABSOLUTELY NO dampening. I could push it in out with my pinky. There was absolutely no resistance whats so ever. So to wrap it up... the fronts all done and looks great. The 90 20valve springs give it a nice lift. I suppose I kinda wanted it to be higher... but its much more practical at the height its at now. I'm almost down painting the right rear and have yet to dismantle the left rear. And to my surprise/frustration the nut on the end of the right rear drive shaft is larger than the other three... and of course I don't have that size socket.... so off the to parts store to buy more stuff! And in case you're wondering.... Yes I have been working on this project for FAR too long but hey I'm a college student who has a job and likes his video games. lol. So I haven't been putting in too many hours a day on this project but it's slowly coming together. I'll post pictures when it's all done. OH and one last question to wrap up this ridiculously long and relatively useless post... lol. About how much does it cost to get a car aligned? I haven't the slightest clue.

Yahoo! Well I got the right rear all painted up and going to get some high heat paint for my brake calipers. It's looking so sweet. I realize that this project is pretty boring for anyone other then myself but this is the first major thing I've done with my car so I'm really excited. I'll get some pictures today if I can. I called a local allignment shop today.... $65 for a 4 way alignment... awesome. I can't wait to go drive it's going to be soooo much different. The rear control arm bushings were a joke. The little metal cylinder center of the bushing just slid out.... lmao. The rubber was all cracked and useless. AND ANOTHER DUMB QUESTION lol: I was wondering how to tell if strut mounts are bad? I bought new front struts mounts a while ago because I thought they were bad due to some strange noises but they weren't the culprits. However I haven't replaced the rear ones. I looked at them today and they're in decent condition. All the blue is chipping off but I'm not sure how to tell if they've gone bad... are they a very important part of the suspension? Meaning if they are even coming close to being bad do they need to be replaced asap?

The Bentley manual actually says that you are supposed to use locking compound on the splines when assembling, that is probably why the drive shaft was so hard to remove. I didnt use any loctite on my rear axles though, and I havent experienced any problems from not doing so, so I dont know the reason for this.
