Well I decided to trust Dan and that this would work by cutting. Turns out he was absolutely right, and I'm glad he just explained the reason for this because I was wondering why it would make a difference. I also noticed that it is just a cycle, and doesn't allow you to unlock twice like on 98's. Weird, but it finally works! I didn't bother soldering the connector this time. I just crimped really good and they don't come out. Now I just have to finish the job and splice into the other wires (cigarette, rear defrost) which will be a few minutes. Finally, a happy ending to an annoying problem (admittedly my own fault). BTW, I found out what the second wire from the top does. After I unplugged the wiring harness, I didn't realize that I had turned it upside down this time and cut #2 instead of #4. I pushed down on the door pin, they all locked. I pulled up, they all unlocked. I used my key, they all locked, alarm armed. I tried to unlock, nope. Nothing. Alarm didn't disengage, the other doors wouldn't open. Good thing I left the window open and had to reconnect the little sucker while hanging upside down into the car. I'm lucky I keft some spare wire. Half an hour later, I undid the damage. But hey, I started work at 4am and am a little tired. Live and learn; take your time doing things.

Great, now he tells us

I'm putting central locking out of a MkIII into my MkII. I have just about all the parts I need. Cheers to central locking. Jeers to misaligned striker plates.

Hey Dan, what size wire did you use? I got a switch for free today and the connector from a Jetta Trek.

should i attach the positive (red w/ white stripe) from the switch to a constant +12v, rather than to the lighter +12v ?? i believe that would allow the central locking system to lock when the key isn't in the on position. thanks, any help is always appreciated!

I wanted to share something that happened to me after I did this mod.I installed two push button momentary contact switches in my console to control the locks. One for unlock and one for lock, each touching the lock control wire to a +12v or a ground wire which I spliced from the cigarette lighter. Push a red button to lock and a black button to unlock. Looks slick and works like a charm. A problem with my car is that the rear driver's side passenger door has a loose vacuum tube that comes unplugged every couple weeks. Today that happened again and as a result the vacuum pump ran continuously for about 30 seconds trying unsuccessfully to lock the doors. I tried pushing the two buttons separately to see if either one would trigger the pump to turn off but to no avail. After this happened, I fixed the tube, but when I got back into my car I found that my unlock button no longer worked. Well, it turns out the unlock button is the one that uses the +12v source from the cigarette lighter. Which shares the same fuse as the radio and dome light. And the radio and dome light myseriously stopped working, too. So I replaced the fuse and the buttons worked again. I soldered a 100 ohm resistor (didn't have any 220's) into the green wire to hopefully stave off another instance of a blown fuse. I am going to try and experiment with diodes sometime during the next couple of weeks and see if i can get both the old lock and the new buttons to work. When I unlock the car with my key, the rest of the doors no longer unlock because of the disconnected wire. I can still arm and disarm the alarm, strangely enough, but once I unlock it with my key, I have to press the new unlock button to get the other three locks to unlock. Hopefully I can get it back to full functionality and still keep my fancy new buttons.
